the memories!
I was dead tired from work, so of course I wasted a good amount of time doing something completely silly. I recently listened to an old PoT opening song, and it made me want to listen to them all. Not only listen to them all, but to see the openings again. So I dug up the DVDs with the episodes to do just that. I wanted a list of all the songs so I wouldn't miss any, and Anime News Network not only provided that but the episodes each are used in! Saves me the hassle of jumping around! In any case, boy was it fun. PoT some had some very excellent songs, but some very forgettable ones too.
Opening Theme:
#01: "Future" by Hiro-X (Eps 1-26)
Wow. Natsukashii. The song really takes me back, but the opening sequence is so static. O_o The video quality of A-O subs sucked big time, too. (I also started watching a bit of episode #4 and laughed at the first year trio talking about Ryoma's chances to win against a regular and getting scolded by Kaidoh. The difference between their frantic reactions to Ryoma's very indifferent one! XD Kaidoh looks really dorky and scary at this point, tho.)
#02: "Driving Myself" by Hiro-X (Eps 27-53)
YAY! I randomly opened #28 and got treated to Karupin and Ryoma oversleeping for the tournament scene! XD I think I like this song better than "Future." I know I like this opening better. There's movement! There's people playing tennis! I like how it seems like Kaidoh and Inui look like they're rallying withe each other. Tezuka's still shot with his name makes him look really old. (OMG IT'S MIZUKI! I like him in his school uniform, actually. That voice requires no ghei clothing. I love Ryoma's lame excuse as to why he's late, and no one believing him even for a moment. Oh, and Horio-as-Ryoma being a dork. XDXD I love Ishida Akira's voice.)
#03: "Make You Free" by Kimeru (Eps 54-75)
#54...the animation has finally started looking good. I love all the pictures of New York in the opening. So they didn't talk to Konomi-sensei about how Ryoma actually grew up in California? Or did he actually grow up in New York and I totally missed this fact? I like this opening because it has lots of Ryoma and movement and tennis playing. I like the change from his pink and red top to the Seigaku uniform at the end. Oh, the first thing you see in the actual episode is a silouhette of Tezuka's flippy hair! He must spend time in the morning making his hair that way, how all those Japanese like to do.
#04: "Long Way" by Ikou (Eps 76-101)
#79...Oh, god it's pedo "masterpiece" glasses cleavage lady. >_> Wow, I don't remember this song at all. I do not care for it, or the opening sequence. The only amusing thing is seeing Inui wearing the dorky short sleeve turtleneck...and the TezuRyo moment. XD But this song is so not inspiring at all. :P
#05: "Fly High" by Toshihiko Matsunaga (eps 102-128)
Heh, this is so the TezuRyo opening. At least, the intro is so TezuRyo. I think the song is a bit weak, but still very catchy. The slow pace matches the images pretty well. And no opening with Tezuka glowing with the universe behind him can be considered bad, or boring.
#06: "Shining" by Yuki Shirai (eps 129-153)
#142...Kevin, toujou! *laughs* Oh, I love this song. It's a party! A festival! It's Kaidoh's awesome lunch! Momo as Ryoma! GP couple portrait! I love all the random silly images in this opening. It fits so well with this oh-so-festive song. I love the group picture with Momo choking Ryoma, and Seigaku making the semi-circle looking up at the sky.
#07: "Paradise" by Yuki Shirai
Er...so...not...um. Yeah. Shoulda stuck with "Shining."
#08: "Dream Believer" by Osami Masaki (eps 166-178)
Visually I love love love this opening. I love the scenes for all the characters. Ryoma chewing bubble gum everywhere. Karupin jumping on Nanjiroth! Tezuka playing Ryoma! Ryoma bicycling down the hill and drinking ponta. And more feet walking! The song is wonderful, too.
Ending Theme:
#01: "You got Game" by Kimeru (Eps 1-26)
What can I say? So natsukashii. And again rather static, but it works better with this song than with the opening. Also, some great shots of the Seigaku regulars. So where was Ryoma walking around in the beginning of the credits?
#02: "Keep your style" by Masataka Fujishige (Eps 27-35,38-39,41-47,49-53)
I like this song. the singer's voice is mellow and smooth. I love how in the beginning the TV shows Nanjiroh back in his samurai days. I love the feet walking thing. I love how he sings "I say you stay, arinomama/kodokusaemo daite/keep your style keep your mind break it out" as the rivals appear. I love the TezuRyo moment at the end. XD
#03: "Walk On" by Masataka Fujishige (Eps 36-37,40,48)
(Heh, #38 is the middle of the Fuji-Mizuki match. OH THE DRAMA of Fuji refusing to shake Mizuki's hand before the match...and the leaves rustling before Fuji opens his eyes!) As for the ending song...I guess I need to see #39 to see the full ending. But I love Kaidoh, Momo and Ryoma sleeping on the bus after the tournament. #37! what a cute dream sequence! I love Ryoma hitting everyone's head with a tennis ball and saying "mada mada da ne", and Karupin sleeping on top of the sleeping Ryoma...Oh god this was a stupid episode. Watching this episode was worth it only for Ginka Intermediate's reaction when they run into Ryoma again. Er...and onto the song...It's okay. The flashbacks to the St. Rudolph matches are kind of boring, as are the rustling trees and the sunset imagery.
#04: "White Line" by Aozu (Eps 54-75)
Heh, talk about a InuKai moment at the end of #54. Inui, forget this "doubles" thing, just confess your love. WE ALL KNOW. As for the song..I have to say it's kind of gay. The song, the singing, the images. It's all so gay. The only part I genuinely like is seeing Tezuka in his gay sort of v-neck sweater looking like someone twice his age (and gay) drinking coffee and reading with his legs crossed. And the last scene with the rackets on the floor and against the wall.
#05: "Kaze no Tabibito" by Fureai (Eps 76-101)
This song is also kind of uninspiring, but it still has a fairly catchy melody. The images in the sequence are kind of nice (Karupin!) and not gay. Kaidoh looked good. I like the last image where Ryoma takes of his cap and you see his shadow.
#06: "Sakura" by Yomu Hamaguchi (Eps 102-140)
I never did get this song, or the closing sequence. It's so...flowery. And the feel of the song itself is so...grand. It kind of creeps me out.
#07: "Wonderful Days" by Pull Tab to Can (eps 141-155)
FANSERVICE! YAY! (What else is there to say?) I can't begin to express my feelings at the fact that the last image is Sanada looking into the distance. XD This song is nice, though. About the last bit of #143 before the ending...I love the drama of Kevin telling the guy he just beat to tell Ryoma that Kevin has come. Stop being such a pathetic stalker, Kevin. Just be honest and beg.
#08: "Little Sky" by Kentaro Fukushi (eps 166-178)
This song is so lovely, I don't care that nothing much happens animation-wise. I love the feet walking thing again. ^_^;;
You know, "Future" is probably the PoT song for me. Maybe because it was the first one, but for some reason it just sticks. Like the first Hikago opening--that will always be the Hikago song. I adore "Shining" because it just makes me happy. I associate it with the silly joyouscrack parts of the show. For sheer coolness and well-put-togetherness, "Dream Believer" is tops.
As for the ending songs, it's a toss up between "Keep Your Style" and "Little Sky." I just love them both.
Wow, talk about a walk down memory lane. It makes me want to rewatch (most of) the entire series again (skip the ghei alien school with the doubles pair of twin girls pretending to be boys). Or at least find my copies of the full songs and listen to them again. ^_^
