Baccano!

I feel like I will join the small number of people online who have actually mentioned this anime with this post. Seriously, why so little noise for such a stellar show? I marathoned (if 13 episodes constitutes a marathon) the series this weekend, as the final episode had been subtitled very recently and the torrents are very well seeded.

Baccano is based on a series of light novels. The anime jumps around timelines and storylines encompassing a very large cast, but mostly it focuses on what happens on The Flying Pussyfoot (I can't help but wince and half-laugh every time that name comes up---I'd love to hear this in a dubbed version because I can only imagine it sounding worse without a Japanese-ized pronunciation) during a Chicago to New York City trainride in 1930. It's a jumble of comedy, drama, thriller, action, gore, philosophizing, romancing, "coincidences," and lots of people who think they are the hottest thing on the face of the earth whose deaths made me very happy (and for those who survived, whose non-deaths made me gnash my teeth). The characters include immortals, thieves, psychopathic assassins, gangsters, innocent bystanders, and comedy relief. I can't even begin to really give a good account of the storyline (okay, I confess, I don't really understand the timeline/storyline and I haven't sorted it out), it's just something that has to be experienced. Just a warning for the gore, it's excessive at certain times.

The nice thing about the large cast of characters is that if there are some who irritate you, you don't have to get stuck watching them for too long. The anime is always switching off to someone else, sometimes pretty quickly. I rather liked the canon pairings and liked the unrealistically upbeat ending of the series (not necessarily "happy," just...upbeat). It's just fun, if this is your kind of fun. Well, once you get past the first episode, which is interesting but somewhat tedious and not that indicative of the rest of the series.

I'd like to watch an English dubbed version of this. The period details are very nicely showcased, so much so that it's kind of odd when the characters talk in Japanese.

Completely beside the point, I came across some slash fanfic while looking for more info. Wow, I totally didn't see that coming. I suppose I should have expected it because everything is slashed, but the canon couples are so much more compelling than any potential slashing it took me totally by surprise. :P

Vino grated on my nerves after a while. I wish they didn't have him go on and on and on about his fucked up view of the world, because it got very annoying after a while. Yes yes, you are the center of the world. Thanks for letting us into your scary scary brain, lets move on. And what was up with his hook up with Chane? It just seemed to lack any good basis...But I suppose for someone as crazy as him it's not so inexplicable. I found him an interesting character until the fight with Russo.

Russo is another guy I wish I saw a little less of. Or, at least the crazy killer part. I dunno, I think it would've been enough to show his bloodlust in smaller spurts (sorry about the pun? ;D). His need to tear people apart seemed silly after a while. At least Vino was fairly quick most of the time, even though he was pretty excessive.

I thought Isaac and Miria would irritate me to no end since they are dumb as logs and really loud. But...they really are well-meaning, and they have such a zest for life! They are so much more likable than some of the others who take themselves waaaay too seriously (see above for examples).

Maiza seemed soooo weak during the confrontation with Szilard. What a let-down.

Firo is too conventional? I like him, but wish he wasn't the one that sucked Szilard into himself. I'd like to see a bit more about him and Ennis, though. Mainly because of Ennis. ^^;

Jacuzzi seriously irritated me at the beginning, because he was just too gullible and such a crybaby. He got so much better later, and his relationship with Nice is adorable. I love Nice giggling over her bombs.

Chane had no personality. Nice character design. She seemed kind of pointless. I wonder if she's more fleshed out in the novels?

I wish they develped Lua more. I'd love to learn more about her and Russo and how their relationship works.

Szliard was too flat a character. I disliked seeing him on screen because he was just trying so hard to be the mad alchemist and projecting a certain villainous aura and failed.

The various Mafiosos were pretty fun to watch. Love the Gandors, they don't really seem to do anything. XD

Czeslaw, your life sucks. You're a cute kid, though. Especially when you cry.

The unusual narrative style might have something to do with the lack of attention the show is getting. I had enough trouble keeping events straight through a mostly-marathon watch, so I can easily see how someone watching week-to-week could lose all the plot threads and decide to drop it. A shame, as it's an amazing show with such nifty characters--Ennis and Firo! Nice and Jacuzzi! Isaac and Miria! *flail*

If you want to take a look, [livejournal.com profile] nin_tendo has been piecing together coherent timelines of the various years (1711 (http://nin-tendo.livejournal.com/6720.html), 1930 (http://nin-tendo.livejournal.com/6948.html), 1931 (http://nin-tendo.livejournal.com/3786.html), 1932 (http://nin-tendo.livejournal.com/7234.html)), though they only go up to episode 9 at the moment.

Ah, that makes sense. It does take a lot to keep things fairly straight, it must be so hard when watching one a week. Hopefully word of mouth will slowly filter through the internets now that the series is over (though I want to see the DVD only stuff!) and the show will pick up popularity...and get picked up? (I want to see it dubbed in English! As long as they don't do a crappy job!)

Thanks for the links to the timelines. I will definitely check them out!
