my last post today, I promise, about ENGLISH fanfics, and manga

I read a funny, funny fic by [livejournal.com profile] prillalar today. At first I had no idea what fandom it was in (because I'm blind and can't read the heading) but that doesn't take away from great enjoyment of the fic. I later realized it was a Stargate fic (by reading the post subject heading), but as I don't have a clue who these people are (except possibly Jack, but that knowledge is hazy and only from overhearing slashy talk from Stargate-addicted fangirl friends) it didn't really help. I recommend this short fic to anyone with a sense of humor:

Pushing Buttons

Since I'm talking about English fanfics, I also came across a bunch of Viewfinder ones over the last several weeks:

Double Exposure by pru, a short, sharp fic about Asami staying over at Takaba's after his home is destroyed. No smut, just great weirdness. I love the last line, "Asami is waiting. His sleeves are rolled up."

Captured Prize by Gryvon. This one is smutty, but I thought it was a pretty good smutty.

Distorted Reality by Kadira ([livejournal.com profile] dunkle_feuer), this one extremely smutty and kinky but with some coherent angst. And a threesome. For me, it fit in with the more filled-out storyline currently running in the manga itself with Naked Truth.

Are there any Harudaki fanfics? I really have no urge to read any, because the manga and doujinshi satisfy me quite well, but I was just idly wondering. Actually, the question should be, are there any good fanfics?

FYI, [livejournal.com profile] oiyaoi has some very pretty doujinshi covers by Nekota Yonezou on her blog. *_* Pretty!

Before I forget, I have a question--if any of you have read Seikimatsu Darling by Naruto Maki, did you like it? Why or why not? I have seen this manga around forever and never had the urge to pick it up. I want to know what other people think about it.

And on the topic of manga, I am totally enjoying the scanlation of Namaiki by Kano Shiuko being posted on [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_daily. Sometimes the translation makes no sense and I wonder what the Japanese said, but overall it's decent and doesn't detract much. The story is funny and cute, and the seme's milion expressions are just priceless. He can look so manly and sexy when he's all over the uke, but then he looks so pathetic and lame like when he gets kicked in the face and is bleeding from the nose. And his hurt expression is cute. :D

I also finally skimmed through volume 9 of FMA. I am struck with every volume how different the manga is from the anime. (mild spoilers ahead for those who care) I can't believe they set up Ross to take the fall for Hughes's murder! And I love how Armstrong drags Ed off to Rizenbul for repairs after creating the damage to his automail himself, even though the trip is totally unnecessary as Winry is standing right there! The humor in the manga is absolutely wonderful.

And I am tired, and sleepy. And the shochu was interesting. I had a bit mixed with equal part hot water and an umeboshi in it. The taste was very slight, but not bad. I'll try again another night, perhaps straight this time.

^_^

I was wondering what manga you were discussing until I recognized the description (what you called Namaiki)... it's quite a crazy one but I like it (I have it... AND the CD-drama that goes with it ^_^).

FMA the manga got quite confusing when reading it at the same time as I was watching the series... it was just too different... I'm gonna have to reread the thing to make sense of it, at some point (that reminds me I did not read the last 2 chapters yet).

*laugh* No clue what the "real name" of that manga is. The drama CD must have a lot of smut in it...that manga sure does...^_^;

I didn't read the FMA manga until the anime was over because I've had not very good experiences when I did read concurrently to watching the anime on other series...and I'm glad I did. I think of them as two different things, since the tone, the characterizations, and the story diverge so much.

I'm not your Steppin' Stone

No idea what it means but that's how they named it in English.

As for the CD-drama? Haven't listened to it yet... I mostly got it because 1- I like the manga; and 2- uke? Suzumura Kenichi... aka Shin in The Gokusen (and you should have seen me drool all over that boy a few months back ^_^).

The seme I don't know, though: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=1497

Except for having seen him in that big file this weekend I extracted Miki/Morikawa from...

And FMA manga could NOT be more different from the anime :)

Checked amazon japan...the actual title is Namaiki, with I'm not your stepping stone the English subtitle.

Suzumura, huh. I haven't seen The Gokusen, but I have heard him other droolworthy roles...nice voice.

The seme I know from Gundam...he has a nice voice too.

Mmm... the page I checked for the CD-drama had the Namaiki title too... but me & japanese titles = Ayoye so of course I used the English one :)

And he was good in The Gokusen...and I don't like yakuza stories, as a rule.

The English titles that these companies give are often baffling or stupid, so I tend to stick with the Japanese titles. The shining example would be, of course, Harudaki.

Yakuza, huh...So you recommend The Gokusen?

Me like...

Check the page at Amazon (since it's licensed and the first 2 DVDs are out). It's short (13 eps) and I got it all from AonE's... It's only yakuza in the sense the teacher (female) is the leader of her clan and Shin... oh Shin... lovely boy, that! :)

Though I don't babble about it anymore I love the Hagaren manga and the divergence in the manga/anime versions was for the better and done well.
I've actually been uploading raw scans of the latest GanGan chapters and the furoku drama CDs for [livejournal.com profile] calintz but if you're interested I'm happy to share. ^_^

Is there a big gap between what you have and volume 9 of the manga? I hate skipping around if I don't have to.

The drama CDs sound cool...

[identity profile] insaneneko.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I found it amusing you call it Hagaren. To one person I always call it that, but since everyone else knows it as FMA I call it that out of habit. ^_^

[identity profile] mitethe.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
I guess hanging around the Japanese fandom has me used to their abbreviations. I do use FMA to my RL friends because they give me a big "?" look when I call it Hagaren.

GanGan is currently the only magazine I get regularly so I have all the chapters after 37 which is where volume 9 ends. I'll stick them up in a locked post. The stories in the furoku drama CDs aren't related to the manga or anime but they're not bad and have a lot of funny bits. I'll upload them when I get back.

Thanks again for the scans! :D
