I need to really have some kind of connection with the characters for me to enjoy a film. If you notice my complaints stem from the utter detachment and passivity of the characters. Why bother being in Japan, except that it's exotic and makes a nice contrast with the "familiar?" *shrugs* That's just me, though.
The film was probably intended to be just what it is. You might give it a try just to see for yourself.
