Sep. 4th, 2004 07:09 pmToday was an absolutely beautiful day. I was driving south from central Oahu on H2, from which you can see all the way to the ocean as the land slopes very gently down to the sea. To the right was the Waianae range, and above was the blue, blue sky. It wasn't clear, because it was peppered with fluffy white clouds, but the color was stunning. And the clouds were so fluffy and so white it made a fabulous contrast with the sky. And everything else was also very vivid. The green of the plants, the various colors of the roofs of the houses...everything. And on my way home from Honolulu westwards, I caught the tail end of an amazing sunset. WOW. The area near the horizon where the sun was setting was a vivid brilliant orange, and those fluffy white clouds from earlier were tinged with delicate pink and light orange colors. It was a very warm day, with very strong sun. A really nice beach day. Too bad I wasn't at the beach or particularly like the beach. But tomorrow we're going to hang out at my friend's apartment's pool, so hopefully it's as beautiful a day tomorrow as it was today.
The only things that marred this day was having to wait forever at the doctor's office (I don't understand how people tolerate having to routinely wait quite a while to see the doctor--what is the point of an appointment??) and having to work.
This week I got a bunch of doujinshi I bought from the author. I had sent her an overpayment, because I can only send cash in 1,000 yen increments. Well, she felt like she couldn't just send me what I had actually paid for (and the option of just sending me the change in stamps, which other people have done, didn't occur to her) so she just sent me extra books I *hadn't* ordered. Those additional books and the postage to cover the weight was much more than what I had overpaid. :P So I ended up with two PoT, one Hikago, one Gundam Seed, one FMA, two Detective Conan, two Harry Potter books. As well as some stationary made from very nice fanart. ^_^ I only ordered the PoT, Hikago, Gundam Seed, and one Harry Potter.
I initially read the Harry Potter because they were manga. Oh. My. God. So cute. The art is adorable, and the story (DM/HP) is as fluffy as the art. I love Draco in this--he is not all that bright, but very full of himself. But when things happen he reacts very badly, screaming like a girl sometimes. ^_^ But what makes it so great is the art. *sigh*
Then I read one of the PoT ones. Pretty good. It had a great transition of Ryoma as a child who played at love to someone who is actually in love. It was a bit marred by the extra element of a jealous obsessive person besides the main couple. Usually I like obsession and insanity, but in this case I truly enjoyed the sweet part of the story.
The Hikago one was pretty nuts. Hikaru, 25 and lonely and unhappy for various reasons, finds himself in his 12 year old body one day. And he is delighted because he can be with Sai again. He immediately goes to his grandfather's house and meets Sai. He makes Sai promise that they'll always be together, to death and beyond.
Hikaru then sets out to sort of make the events that happen to him happen. He goes over to Touya-sensei's go salon to meet Akira, but finds that he isn't there. He then goes to the Institute to sign up as an Insei. He is told the deadline had passed, but he snags Ogata-san passing by and tells the staff that Ogata-san is recommending him. Ogata-san is thinking, who is this boy, what is going on? By the time his thought processes catch up the staff has believed Hikaru's words and given him the application. When Ogata-san is about to say something, Hikaru tells him this is the least you can do for me, because you did all those things to me. This begins the Ogata-san the pedophile rumor throughout the go world. In actuality, Ogata-san had actually drunkenly raped Hikaru in the other timeline, but of course this Ogata-san doesn't even know Hikaru.
Hikaru takes the Insei exam, and of course passes. He asks do you want to play against a 10-year skill, or a 1000-year skill? The teacher chooses 1,000 years, so Sai plays against him. Hikaru assures the dubious insei teacher that he's good at shidougo, he won't crush the hopes of the insei. On his first day he latches onto Waya, who wonders who this kid is. Hikaru keeps telling him we're fated friends! Waya is like, I don't know you! Hikaru asks, with puppy dog eyes, you don't like me? Waya thinks, forget like or dislike, I don't know you! But everyone likes Hikaru.
Except Ochi, who is pissed. He tells what everyone has missed, that Hikaru is playing shidougo against them all. He realized this because he always has pros come to his house for shidougo.
In any case, the story is quite long. Basically everyone is charmed, tricked or just bamboozled by a 25-year old Hikaru in a cute child's body. Except for Akira, who is actually the 25-year old Akira in child Akira's body. The story is both funny and serious and sometimes random people burst into song. A very very odd story.
