I've fallen in love with a new manga. Usagi Drop by Unita Yumi is a josei manga with three volumes so far (
1,
2,
3 @ amazon jp), though I've only read up to volume 2. The description from
Baka-Updates:
When Daikichi returns home for his grandfather’s funeral he meets an unfamiliar child in the garden. Later, his mother explains to him that Rin is grandfather's illegitimate daughter! The presence of the child causes embarrassment to all relatives and nobody wants to adopt her. Daikichi, annoyed by such attitude, decides to take care of her himself. How will the cohabitation between the bachelor and the quiet Rin evolve?First and foremost, this story is adorable. It's heartwarming, sweet, touching, and charming, and yet it doesn't go overboard into saccharine sentimentality. The characters are complex and the story feels very grounded. It's hilarious seeing Daikichi being completely lost about how to take care of a child. How do you enroll a child into school? How do you know what their vaccination history is? You have to buy approved backpacks and desks for elementary school? He also has to deal with the daily grind of taking and picking up Rin from school, even changing departments at work so that he doesn't have to stay late at work. But he's willing to overcome everything because of his attachment to Rin. Rin's rather quiet around strangers, but very assertive with Daikichi. Seeing her act the "older sister" at 6 years old to his 30+ just makes me smile. They have the best kind of guardian-child relationship, where Daikichi not only cares for Rin's well-being but respects her wishes while Rin obviously adores him.
The art is simple but pleasing. Not too fussy, not too barren, it fits the feel of the story so well.
I can't recommend this story highly enough. Fortunately, it's being scanlated by
J-sis. Only one chapter out so far, though.
