bad bad bad
Feb. 5th, 2009 09:24 pmI watched an awful episode of a drama called Q.E.D., which was adapted from a manga about two high school students who solve mysteries. Nosy chick with a really high and piercing voice and a "genius" guy with fish-lips and no personality who had attended MIT already. Yes, that MIT. And yet he's attending high school. Why? So that a "genius" can attend the same school as nosy annoying chick and they could team up to solve mysteries!
This episode was about genius boy's past. His "soul mate" from MIT who'd been just as genius as him had "found" him after he'd disappeared without a word. Turns out someone had ripped up his thesis and had erased the digital file, and the culprit had been rumored to be the "soul mate." Genius boy had taken the blame for the destruction of his own work and left school. "Soul mate" had been looking for him ever since...
The "soul mate" was very good looking, with very nice wavy hair and a goatee. He spoke Japanese very well. There was another person that hung out with them, that now worked with "soul mate" on some important work. A very pretty woman who spoke Japanese decently. It was painful listening to the English portions because genius boy had an awful accent and the "soul mate" and the other person seemed to be non-native English speakers. Very stilted. I'm glad they stuck to speaking Japanese for the most part.
The nosy chick spent a lot of time sticking her nose into everything (and thus learning about the destroyed paper which "soul mate" hadn't known about--how he remained clueless is baffling, but whatever) and lecturing people in that annoyingly intrusive and moralistic way that I associate with Japanese dramas featuring school teachers. That high voice of hers was....painful.
The best part was when the pretty foreigner revealed that she was the culprit of the thesis destruction and tried to push the genius boy off the roof. Of course it took a "just in time" appearance of nosy chick and "soul mate" to save him because he's incapable to being anything other than passive. The reaction of pretty girl? "Sorry!" In Japanese! You'd think she'd have spoken in her native language (whatever it is) since her emotions were all riled up, but...no. And the way she said it, it was as if she was apologizing for stepping on someone's toes, not attempted murder. (It was a pathetic attempt since it was done in slow motion and genius boy was too much of a wimp to put up much of a struggle.)
There were slashy vibes between genius boy and soul mate that maybe could've salvaged the awful experience for me. Unfortunately, it was all ruined by the ugliness and bland character of genius boy. "Soul mate" would be all passionate (and sexy) and then there'd be a close-up of fish-lips and blank eyes. *shudders*
I have no idea if this episode was representative of the series, but it was enough to make me hate it. How I wish I'd sporked my eyes (and ears) out instead of watching it. The ending song was quite good, though! There were lots of two-shots of nosy chick and genius boy during the closing credits, though. I kept yelling at the screen that they shouldn't breed since their offspring would be ugly and with personality defects. It was hard to appreciate the nice song with such awful images dancing across the screen...
