I heard an old interview with Charlton Heston that was replayed because he'd died. They mostly talked about the famous movies he'd been in. He said that they'll never make those grand epics with thousands of extras on set ever again (like his movies or Lawrence of Arabia) because it'd be way too expensive. For the scene where he leads the exodus out of Egypt in The Ten Commandments there were 8,000 people and 5,000 animals, and they could only shoot about five takes a day because it took hours to get everyone back to the starting point. That just blew my mind. That truly was epic movie-making.
