I stayed up way too late last night reading 11 volumes of xxxHOLIC, so I'm caught up with the bound volumes now! It's been nice reading all these series I'd fallen off reading for a while, even though I can't have the satisfaction of actually having an end waiting for me. ^^; Whoever said I didn't need to read TRC to read xxxHOLIC lied to me. I totally need to read TRC now (especially since the "climax," such as it is, seems completely wtf? but without any great emotional trauma/satisfaction without knowing what happened in TRC). Too bad not all the TRC volumes are out in English--otherwise I could read the series in the bookstore. I'd totally gotten bored of the series and just can't shell out the money for the volumes I don't own (which are many, as I only own volumes to the mid-teens) without knowing if I'd like the end. At this point I just want to know the complete picture vis-a-vis xxxHOLIC, which has always been the series I preferred.
What is puzzling me at this point (volume 17) is where the series is going now that the stuff related to TRC seems to be over. How long will CLAMP go with this? And where are they going? I'd like to think that reading TRC will give me a clue, but perhaps I'm being too optimistic (or pinning too many hopes on TRC). Not that I don't like xxxHOLIC as it is now....
I want the next volume already. :P
So is Yuuko dead dead, or is there something else going on? Is Watanuki waiting in vain? Is there some kind of romantic thing going on between Yuuko and Watanuki? I hope not, because (putting aside any slash fangirl bias) I like pure mentoring relationships a lot and this one worked out very nicely.
It's interesting that CLAMP skipped four years into the future after Watanuki decides to run the shop. We don't get to see Watanuki fuck up and get hurt a lot, which I'm a bit sad to have missed. But then it seems like it would've been the perfect opportunity to get bogged down, so perhaps skipping the rough initial learning part was a good idea. It's depressing thinking about Watanuki's human companions aging while he remains the same. How long will he wait? The slash fangirl in me longs for old-Doumeki/young-Watanuki angst.
The Kohane storyline irritated me greatly once it started escalating. I couldn't take it seriously at all, and I'd already gotten used to suspending belief a lot with CLAMP stuff. I think I'll ignore that whole business and enjoy Kohane as she is now.
The woman who'd eaten the mermaid's flesh storyline was also a bit stupid. I felt nothing at all for the woman and it just seemed like a gratuitous excuse to have more bandaged passive abused females. Ugh.
Doumeki as bossy errand boy who demands meals and great quantities of sake amuses me to no end. I like their relationship now that Watanuki has stopped being so spastic. And I like Watanuki lounging about in prettily-patterned kimono, smoking. Of course we'll never get the same level of splendid outfits Yuuko wore, but I'm glad he gets to not wear the same outfit constantly now that he doesn't have a school uniform.
I adore that oden-cart kit, especially when he claps his paws against his cheeks and blushes. SO CUTE. ♥
