I personally think the manga is weird (although it is, indeed, very pretty) because it only does stories 1 (the rape) and 4 (the one where they sort-of get together because Kei is going crazy from the not-sex). And the events of 2 and 3, which are absolutely CRUCIAL for the relationship development in between, are mentioned in like one panel. So you can imagine I was doing a lot of head-scratching when I read it.
I enjoy the manga, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have checked out the novels if I hadn't liked the manga to begin with, but even though it's extremely faithful to the parts it covers, I don't think it does a very good job of conveying what is adorable and healthy about their relationship -- it only covers the ANGST! and the WOE! and the RAPE BY TANNHAUSER! and then suddenly there's NERVOUS BREAKDOWNS! and SEX!
