FujiRyo goodness...

Oh man, I was putting my Initial D doujinshi back into the stack they came from when I noticed a PoT doujinshi with a really ugly cover. It was a novel called "Kimi to miru yume" by e-yan-k (website here, I added the site to my PoT fanfic list) and since I had some time before I had to leave, I started to read it (or more like reread it...). I took it with me to a get-together at a friend's house, and while they played games I finished (re)reading it...
Oh my god. This fic is too worthy. It's from first person Fuji POV, and I love the way she portrays him. He's outwardly unfailingly polite and gentlemanly, but inside he's mostly indifferent. In order to keep people happy he is not above a bit of deception and manipulation. One day he finds Ryoma having lost his memory. Initially he is quite put out that he has to waste his day off, but he duly takes Ryoma to the hospital to be looked at, etc. But from one small comment by Ryoma, he realizes that though Ryoma outwardly seems okay, he's actually very frightened because he doesn't remember anything at all. He becomes interested in him--previous to this he had never interacted much with him--and out of a desire to get to know him better, lies to him, saying they had been boyfriends.
I love how Ryoma is different in some ways, but still the same. There are basic parts of the personality that stay fairly the same, but that in turn confuses the people around him. He comes to depend on Fuji, who is the first person he met after he had lost his memory, and is unfailingly nice to him.
Fuji, on the other hand, enjoys seeing Ryoma's and his teammate's reactions to their closeness. The first night after he found Ryoma, Fuji, not knowing Ryoma's address or phone number, had called Oishi, told him briefly the circumstances and asked him to call Ryoma's house. They end up sleeping in Fuji's bed (chastely), and Fuji is delighted by Ryoma's reaction when he wakes up. The deep flush, the stammering, the falling back and putting distance between them.
Fuji smiles his Fuji smile and tells little lies to keep the deception going....but it turns out that he was actually deceiving himself, and didn't do such a good job on the people he thought he was deceiving. He slowly but surely changes over the course of the story, and the ending was absolutely wonderful.
It's hard to convey what makes this fic so good...it's just how she writes Fuji's voice. I love the story, and I think both Fuji and Ryoma are fairly close to IC. And it was an original and great take on the cliched convention where a character has amnesia. Now I want to go dig through my stacks of doujinshi to see if I own any more of her stuff. :P
Ugh, I am tired...I should not be writing anything right now...but I am too excited about having rediscovered an absolutely excellent story. ^_^ I will have to check out the author's website to read the fics posted there. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like she posted long fics online.
