The people living and fighting on Fairy are so segregated from the rest of the population it's even reflected in how they refer to each other - "Earthlings" and "space aliens". It feels like we're on the outside looking into the bubble that is their world. Considering what Rei went through it's even more surprising (and significant) that he has the relationship he has with Jack, if we want to connect manga canon to anime canon. I smell fanfic fodder. XD
