I was so damn tired on Monday that I decided that watching a movie was a great way to do something fannish and be off my feet for a couple of hours. I chose to watch Nana. Well...that was a brilliant choice, because it was a pretty good movie. More importantly, it made me want to read the manga.
As movie adaptations of long-running series go, it was pretty good. It had the usual problems with having to compress x volumes of story into a movie, but I could forgive them because it was more or less coherent and enjoyable for me, being completely unfamiliar with the series. I don't know how a major fan would react, though. It helped that the music kicked ass. ^__^ The one thing that drove me batty was the way live-action Japanese dramas set up scenes of great tenderness or great fantasy. They are very stiff. I used to watch a lot of Japanese dramas, and they had the same problem. I don't know if it's just the style they like, or they just suck, but it really bothers me. :P
So, I do own the first five volumes of the manga. I just never got around to reading them. The movie made me interested enough in the characters that when I got home I skimmed them. It was interesting seeing the differences in plot and character. I am very happy to say that the manga is far more complex and, well, just better. The character's have more facets to them (esp the secondary characters, who are not very well-developed in the movie), and their interactions are a lot more complicated and engrossing. The plot, it goes without saying, is much more involved and...better (I need a bigger vocabulary ^_^;).
In any case, I also bought the November Cookie to get the extra, a little charm with a white dog and black cat because it's too damn cute! It was worth the 400 yen! XD
To celebrate finding a new series to follow (now I have to pick up the rest of the volumes...where does all my money go?), I uploaded Nana music. I vaguely remember seeing links to the songs earlier this month, but I think they need to be shared more!
First the Black Stones song that I kept hearing in music stores, then in the theatre before the movie, then in the movie several times...I think I've been brainwashed into loving this song:
Glamorous Sky
It helps that Nakashima Mika sings it. I love that voice. ^__^
And the Trap Nest songs. Endless Story is used perfectly as BGM for some scenes. I don't remember where the hell Journey is used, but they are both very nice songs:
Endless Story
Journey
And as a bonus, the bestest song from the Love for Nana tribute album I was all ga-ga over a while back:
Give Me All of Your Love!! by Tommy Heavenly 6
