insanenekoWhile I haven't commented much, I've been reading KKM off and on. There were a bunch of differences with the anime I was going to comment on, but...it's been so long I've forgotten them. :P I'm currently switching between the first side story volume and the volume where all the bad stuff begins to happen. I'm both looking forward to and dreading reading further. The novels begin with a sort of "prologue" which is a monologue by one character. I had previously translated Adelbert's one. I decided to do another one because I thought it provided interesting insight into the brothers' fathers (and I was bored out of my mind at work):
I am starving for love.
It's true. As soon as they became taller than me, my sons forgot their love and respect for their mother and became steadily more like their fathers.
When I look back at when I had married my first husband, I hadn't been in the troublesome position of Maou yet. Gwendal's father was quite a menacing man, and as a young girl I was attracted to that severity. Gwendal is now just like him, in things like looking older than his actual age.
In contrast, my third husband was a youngster with severe emotional swings. He was like a nervous puppy and was so cute, I couldn't help but want to pet him. Though he looks just like me, Wolfram's personality is definitely from his father.
What was striking was my unexpected and surprising encounter with Conrad's father. He was being pursued. When I sheltered him while on a trip, we fell in love. Though he was a human who's only good point was his swordsmanship, things like differences in race and rank didn't matter. Because love is all in the world, and everything is equal in the face of love!
But I did see that he had two tattos on his left arm. That is the mark of a human who has committed a serious crime, the kind that gets a person banished from a country. He was a fugitive criminal.
Ah, a criminal of love! How wonderful!
Then I am a hunter of love. I will draw the bow with all my strength. No one can escape from my hunt.
One of these days I will provide a detailed summary of the side story about Anissina and Gwendal because it is hilarious and utterly idiotic. Though I do want to note that Anissina in the novels not only believes in the advancement of women, but the idea that women should reign over men. And yet she hates what she believes is the recent weakening of men, because as she puts it, what's the point of conquering a weak opponent? ^_^;
What was absolutely fascinating was the Conrad POV account of the very beginning of his journey to Earth with Julia's soul, mainly because it's so damn different from the anime. I suppose they had to shorten and simplify things story-wise, but what is sad is the insight into Conrad's mental state. He was very bitter and angry at the time. So much so that not only did he basically threaten to make off with the spirit of the next Maou, but he wanted someone to conveniently kill him (in a mugging or something) and put him out of his misery. He arrives hurt, bleeding, unarmed (he was supposedly armed and maybe in combat before he was sent to Earth), and was not met with Rodrigues immediately. He was in fact picked up by an immigrant Mexican boy who thought he was an illegal immigrant that needed help. Conrad's thoughts are extremely amusing. He's amazed at the black eyed and black haired people all over the place. He's amazed that they are working, because in Shin-Makoku people like that are revered and well taken care of. His judgements of people's ages are so off. He figures an old woman is over 400 years old, a three year old to be around 13, etc. He doesn't realize (mainly because he can't communicate with the humans) that they are humans and are much younger than he thinks. He, on the other hand, looks to be a teenager in high school or so. But of course he's like 80 or so at this point. ^_^ In any case, it is through his interactions with the Mexican boy and his family, as well as Rodrigues (when they finally meet up) that gets him out of that funk he's in at the beginning and decide to press forward and entrust Julia's soul into an appropriate vessel.
And in the useless but interesting trivia department, I came across a site where they tried to research where the names of the main Mazoku characters are derived from: Kyou Kara Maou Name Explanations.
