why I shouldn't take 2 hour naps

It's 1:30 in the morning and I'm still awake. I need to get up decently early tomorrow morning! ;_;
Since I'm just killing time before I get sleepy enough for bed and I just don't feel like typing in the translations I did by hand (OMG remind me never to do translations by hand again. Typing pages and pages of scribbles SUCKS.), I decided to continue on the reminiscing...this time about the fandoms I read. Before I jumped into Japanese fandom with PoT and Hikago (and later Gundam Seed), I read English fics. I don't really remember my first fandom. I remember reading heavily in X-Files, Highlander, Star Wars and Gundam Wing. I also read a good bit in various anime and other fandoms, including HP.
Gundam Wing kind of turned me off when it got huge and there were far too many fics where the authors had disclaimers saying they had never seen the show and were basing their understanding of the universe on fanfics they've read. I think what put it over the top was one too many Duo-abuse fics I accidentally stumbled on (was NOT into Heero/Duo, where most of the Duo-abuse fics seemed to be concentrated at but the disease seemed to spread to the entire fandome eventually...at least, the part that I was reading). I think I mostly read Trowa/Quatre, but...I'm actually having problems remembering now. :P
Harry Potter was kind of scary. It just got so HUGE, it was hard to keep track of. I don't even want to think about how big the fandom must be now, since the last time I actively looked for fics was...probably around when the first movie came out. One wonderful thing about this fandom was the abundance of disgustingly long and angsty fics.
I've rediscovered FFVII recently, but it has the distinction of being one of the two fandoms that I read in quite a bit where I had never seen the original. I've never played the game, and don't even know the actual plot. I only kind of know things from reading various fanfics. It was weird rereading fics I read years ago, some of which had not been finished back then but were either done or at least further along now. I started reading this fandom because an author I liked was taking forever in updating a long, angsty fic in another fandom and I wanted MORE. And of course the angst just pulled me in.
The other fandom I've read a good amount of but had never seen the original is Buffy. My fanfic reading basically focused on Xander. Don't know how he is in canon, but authors had some fun with him with all his complexes and shit. I wondered if the ones where he's abused by his parents had any kind of basis in canon, even while relishing the stories. I don't even remember how I got sucked into that fandom...
I remember scouring FF.net for fics, before they started with those annoying policies (like no NC-17 fics) were implemented. Of course, there was a whole lot of crap to wade through, but I was willing to go looking for the hidden gems. I rarely check out FF.net or other archives and just browse now. Most of my English fics come from LJ comms or flist recs. I only bother browsing for Japanese fanfics now. :P
It's odd seeing so many authors I used to read having LJs now. I know many of them didn't used to have them, but...is it some kind of trend that everyone gets one now? *shrugs*
In any case, it's amazing just how many fandoms I did read in. More than I thought. :P And with that...I guess I should go to sleep already...
