This is another TezuRyo doujinshi I had translated while I had no computer. I finally typed up the translation and scanned it in this weekend. Because it's a bit too long to post each page of, I uploaded a zip of it. The usual disclaimers of crappy scanning and sloppy translation apply.

This doujinshi, unlike the previous ones I've posted, is serious, and I really like it. It touches on the unofficial Tezuka-Ryoma game. The conversations between Tezuka and Inui and Tezuka and Oishi are revealing and interesting. I like how Tezuka's motivations are presented, and as a bonus Oishi gets very cool! I love how he gets so heated when he's concerned. I also thought Fuji's minor appearance was very Fuji-like. In any case, download via Rapidshare or YSI.

Catch and Release?

p3

Tezuka: Echizen's current tennis is nothing more than a copy of Echizen Nanjiroh...As he is now he will only remain a copy.
Tezuka; What he needs the most now
Tezuka: Is to be awakened to his own strength
sfx: gi (squeak)

p4

Ryuzaki: ...Why do something so reckless, Tezuka?
sfx: gishi (creak)
Ryuzaki: The city tournament is coming right up
Tezuka: ...
Tezuka; I know myself the best
sfx: gara... (rattle)
Tezuka; Excuse me

p5

Ryuzaki: ...
Ryuzaki: ...Do you really?...
Ryuzaki: In the end, you didn't answer
Ryuzaki: The key question

p7

Oishi: I heard...You went to the hospital yesterday
Oishi: You were reckless, weren't you?...If it became painful
Tezuka: It's not a problem

p8

Tezuka: I simply had it examined
Oishi: ...
Oishi: Of course it's a problem!...Why do you have to go that far!?
Tezuka; I did it because it was necessary
Oishi: Necessary?
Tezuka: Oishi
sfx: kata (clatter)

p9

Tezuka: I was asked the same thing by Ryuzaki sensei and your uncle as well...It was necessary to awaken Echizen
Tezuka; In order to win at the Nationals...In order to go up against opponents at the National level
Tezuka: He can't the way he is now
Tezuka: I'm the only one that can do that
Oishi; I don't want to hear reasoning like that

p10

Oishi: ...Leaving aside Ryuzaki sensei and Uncle Akitaka
Oishi: You don't have to give me the slip...Am I that untrustworthy?

p11

Oishi: Frankly, I don't know...what Echizen is missing
Oishi: But it must be what you say
Oishi: ...
Oishi: ...But!
'
p12

Oishi: Isn't that Echizen's problem?
Oishi: That's something beyond...what you'd do as his sempai or his captain!!
Oishi; Even if we need his strength for the Nationals
Oishi: If it's in exchange for your elbow, then it's putting the cart before the horse!
Oishi: You're the one who wants to go to Nationals, not Echizen!!

p13

Oishi: ...
Oishi: ...I'm sorry for raising my voice
Oishi: (Um...) You want to do something
Oishi: For Echizen, right?
Oishi: Because he's like you...when you were a first year
sfx: gata (clunk)
Tezuka: Oishi

p14

Tezuka; No further
Tezuka; Don't stick your head in any further

p15

sfx: gara (rattle)
Oishi: ...
Oishi: Tezuka....

p16

That's not it, Oishi
"I want to hold out my hand"
"To my kouhai who is very similiar to how I used to be"
If it was such a praiseworthy thing, then why

p17

Do I have to cover it up with such forced reasoning?
My coach, my doctor
My best friend

p18

"There are countless strong players at Nationals"
"I wanted to show Echizen the world outside of what he knew"
(I wanted to make him see something other than his father)

p19

That's right, it's not praiseworthy
Echizen...

p20

I wanted to be the one to bring him out of the world he knew
I couldn't care about appearances
So that I wouldn't have to concede this position to anyone else

p21

Fuji: Fufu...So fervent
Kawamura: What is?

p22

Fuji: What do you think?
Kawamura: (Haha) What do you mean?
Kawamura: ...Ooh
Kawamura; Echizen, huh...Yeah, he's been watching the whole time
Fuji: Yup...It's like his whole body has turned into an eye
Fuji: But you know
Fuji: I'd feel nervous if someone gazed at me like that
Fuji; How do you put it...it's so like him?

p23

Kawamura: Yeah...But I wonder why...Until yesterday
Kawamura: Tezuka was the one watching Echizen...
Fuji: Oh...You noticed, Taka-san?
Kawamura: (Ahaha) Of course even I would
Kawamura: It's the first time in the two years I've known him that I've seen Tezuka notice someone like that...I thought he'd bore a hole into Echizen
Kawamura: I wonder what happened

p24

Fuji: Hm...There's no question their absences the last two days are related
Kawamura: Yeah...Something must have happened
Kawamura: I hope it wasn't a fight or something
Fuji: Don't worry, Taka-san...I don't think it was something like that...Though it's only a hunch
Kawamura: A hunch?...Your hunches are reliable, Fuji
Fuji: Really?
Ahahaha

p25

...Somehow
You're creepy, you know? Tezuka

p26

Inui: Tezuka
Inui: I was wondering why you were absent for two days....Did you go fishing or something?
Inui: How did it go?

p27

Tezuka; ..Superb
Inui: Really
That's unexpected...He answered
He must be in a good mood
Inui: What was it that you wanted to catch so much that you skipped practice?
tezuka; Hard to say...What everyone values is different
Tezuka: If you're interested you should try it...You might be able to catch a big one

p28

Inui: (Ahaha) Fishing is outside my field of speciality
Tezuka; That's not true...I think it would suit you
Tzuka; Because what you need to fish is data
Inui: Oh?
Tezuka: The season, climate, weather, and time
TEzuka; From this data...you infer and find the right place

p29

Tezuka; Then all you need is a little luck and the knack
Tezuka; Don't you think it's a game you'd like?
Inui: ...
Inui: I see...that is interesting
Inui: And the "knack?"

p30

Tezuka; That's not something you learn from someone else
Inui: Please, sensei...since it's my first lecture
Tezuka: ....That's true...For example
Tezuka: Even if there's a bite on your lure

p31

Tezuka: Don't reel it in immediately...Wait until the fish has swallowed the bait
Tezuka; Since it'd be pointless
Tezuka; If it gets away with the bait, right?
Well, shall I reel it in?

p32

I wanted your eyes
To see something other than your father
I wanted them to see me

Thank you so much for translating and posting this. I will be reading it over and over. It's so insightful. I do enjoy the cute stories a lot, but this -- this really helps me to get closer to the heart of them, closer to understanding them.

I wanted your eyes
To see something other than your father
I wanted them to see me

That's really all of it, right there. It makes me want to cry.

I'm glad you like it. In fact, I'm glad you had the reaction I was hoping other people would have. It's rare to come across manga doujinshi with the kind of canon serious story this one has. I love reading this one over and over, which is why I was so happy I was able to scan it to share. ^_^

Er...I don't have bigger scans. ^_^; I'm so used to scanning to post online, I automatically resize everything when I scan them in. :P

I'm working on the AkiHika doujinshi now! I'll send the manga part over first when I'm done with it so that you'll have something to work on.

Tezuka in this dojin is like Fuji in a calm version.
So we all know the real reason why he want to play that match even if he might sacrifice his arm, heh. ^_~

I like this line

Tezuka: Even if there's a bite on your lure
Tezuka: Don't reel it in immediately...Wait until the fish has swallowed the bait
Tezuka; Since it'd be pointless
Tezuka; If it gets away with the bait, right?

Well, shall I reel it in?

Ahh, not bad Tezuka, you are beyond my expectation. ^^
Thank you for sharing. I like it so much. (make me like tezuka more)

Btw, I can't find the link to dl 'Lucky Birthday!' Could you please check it again. :D

Took it. A doujin based on canon is really, really rare and this one was really good. Oishi's worry and Fuji's "hunch" were a nice touch to the plot and then Tezuka's comparison to his match with Ryoma with fishing was fantastic. I wonder if Inui figured out just what Tezuka was talking about...

But my favorite line was definitely the last one:
I wanted your eyes
To see something other than your father
I wanted them to see me

Well, he definitely caught Ryoma's attention.

Yes, I love not only the Tezuka-Ryoma parts, but all the other characters thrown in doing their thing. I can't help but think Inui knew what Tezuka was talking about. He started Tezuka on the fishing, asking if he was doing something like fishing when he was absent from practice for two days, after all.

Those last lines are probably everyone's favorites, including mine. ^_^

Um. I'm really sorry if this is an imposition, but I'd made an html file of your translations opposite the scans, and stuck it up on my site for a friend. I'd intended it to be temporary, but now Aja has recced it, so I am thoroughly embarrassed and asking retrospective permission. It's here (http://www.notquiteroyal.net/achiasa/Catch-and-Release/CaR.html), it's linked back to this page, and I'm fine with taking it down if you'd rather not have it there.

Sorry. -.-;

There was something... haunting in Tezuka's thoughts. I loved it, it showed such a different side from Tezuka.

And Oishi. ^^; He really cares about Tezuka, doesn't he?
