Just saw a WTF segment on some random Japanese trivia show called "Trivia no Izumi." From the little I saw of it, this show consists of little known trivia that viewers send in. The celebrity panelists see this trivia and give points on the WTF-ness of the trivia. The sender receives appropriate compensation (of the monetary kind) based on the score.

The one I caught was about Peter Pan. Supposedly, in the unabridged version of the book, Peter and Wendy, there is reference to how Peter only has children in his gang because he kills them off when they start growing up. They "prove" this by showing pages from the book in English highlighting the relevant passage with the Japanese translation underneath. The passages mention how he kills them off quickly and vindictively. Apparently most people don't know this because most children's editions are abridged. I, as well as the celebrity panel, were astounded. I googled for the full text of the book and searched through it. Looks like they were right about basic facts but wrong about details. The show actually took two separate passages and basically treated them as one:

The boys on the island vary, of course, in numbers, according as they get killed and so on; and when they seem to be growing up, which is against the rules, Peter thins them out; but at this time there were six of them, counting the twins as two.

But of course he cared very much; and he was so full of wrath against grown-ups, who, as usual, were spoiling everything, that as soon as he got inside his tree he breathed intentionally quick short breaths at the rate of about five to a second. He did this because there is a saying in the Neverland that, every time you breathe, a grown-up dies; and Peter was killing them off vindictively as fast as possible.

They made the "killing them off vindictively as fast as possible" part seem as if it was referring to the Lost Boys. Goes to show you, don't believe everything you see on TV. Especially Japanese programs that insist on sticking up English text when most of their viewers can't possibly read the text flashing on the screen that fast.

As I've mentioned before, I'm translating for the scanlation of a manga called Sleeper for No Deadline. Well, I just realized that they have HTTP releases of the first two chapters (in four parts). The perfect opportunity to check out the manga (and not deal with IRC)!! I am in the middle of volume 2 and I am loving the chapter I'm currently working on. It mixes romance, angst, mystery, fantasy and boy bands with pretty art. ^_^

Came across the Crazy Apple Rumors Site and got a good laugh. Love the "tips" they collected for installing the new OS, Tiger. Top on the list? "A clean install is always better. Reformat your entire hard drive before you install the operating system. You should throw out your old data, too, as it may be corrupted. It also might be best to move to a new city and change your name. Start over with a new life, it's the only way to be sure." *laughs*

[livejournal.com profile] mitethe had to go and write a piece of TezuRyo crack "inspired" by eps 177-178. It resulted from a side conversation we had going via comments:

me: Tezuka Zoooone!!!!
mitethe: Tezuka: the basic building block of the universe and what your highschool texts never told you.
me: Tezuka as a basic building block of the universe frightens me at a very basic level of my psyche...
mitethe: What, don't you like the idea that Tezuka may be a part of you? Ok ok, I'll stop. :P
me: I'm just imagining "TEZUKA ZOOONEE!!!" at the atomic level...everywhere in the universe...
mitethe: You should have seen my reaction to the glowing proton things Tezuka made in 177-178. XD
me: Gah, Tezuka birthed universes in that episode. So wrong...
mitethe: That would be the BEST and, at the same time, the WRONGEST mpreg idea ever. XD;
me: ...
me: no tezuka mpreg.
me: NO TEZUKA MPREG!
me: *brain breaks*

And so of course she had to come back with...

the crack, or why you don't want to be a pillar of seigaku )

My brain broke after that. When it reassembled I laughed long and hard. And then got her permission to post it. XD
