yami no kodou: waxing nostalgic
Apr. 3rd, 2007 09:16 pmNot that long ago I had downloaded and skimmed through the available volumes of the manga Yami no Kodou by Yoshihara Reiko and Kada Michiru. I wasn't familiar with the artist, Kada Michiru, but I knew Yoshihara Reiko well, having read (or having attempted to read) many of her books (she's most famous for Ai no Kusabi?). It's supernatural horror BL that seriously reminded me of the really (really) old-school shoujo horror I remember reading way back when (basically before I discovered that shonen manga didn't suck). The art style contributes to the impression, but it's really the set-up of the world as well as the atmosphere that gives it that feel. I didn't read it carefully, but I blame that on the fact that the manga is very wordy and the scans weren't the easiest on my eyes. I did buy the manga in Japan and when they eventually reach me in a month or so I plan on sitting down and reading it. Yeah, I liked it enough to buy it (currently at 15 volumes, though I think I didn't get volume 15...^^;). I got very nostalgic over the supernatural horror shoujo I read long ago, and love that I can at turns take it more or less seriously and laugh at it (flashbacks to Zetsuai/Bronze and Mirage in that respect, actually...). I was pleased to find out that the first three chapters of volume one have been scanlated by Storm in Heaven. Anyone interested in the raws, they are available at all (or at least some of) the usual suspects for BL manga downloads...
I...don't really want to bother talking about the story, mostly because I forgot the beginning and I don't want to pore over the scans to remember. :P Think supernatural horror with very old families with very old duties and hierarchies and customs, reincarnation, obsession, and something(one) coming in and messing it all up and creating a new reality. Very very classic shoujo feel (at least to me), with a "spunky" heroine who gets to be both kick ass AND victimized. XD
It's too bad there are only three chapters translated. It's definitely one of those manga that start off with that whole intro/set-up stage that feels completely like intro/set-up. It took a while for me to get into it. :P
