Baccano!

I feel like I will join the small number of people online who have actually mentioned this anime with this post. Seriously, why so little noise for such a stellar show? I marathoned (if 13 episodes constitutes a marathon) the series this weekend, as the final episode had been subtitled very recently and the torrents are very well seeded.

Baccano is based on a series of light novels. The anime jumps around timelines and storylines encompassing a very large cast, but mostly it focuses on what happens on The Flying Pussyfoot (I can't help but wince and half-laugh every time that name comes up---I'd love to hear this in a dubbed version because I can only imagine it sounding worse without a Japanese-ized pronunciation) during a Chicago to New York City trainride in 1930. It's a jumble of comedy, drama, thriller, action, gore, philosophizing, romancing, "coincidences," and lots of people who think they are the hottest thing on the face of the earth whose deaths made me very happy (and for those who survived, whose non-deaths made me gnash my teeth). The characters include immortals, thieves, psychopathic assassins, gangsters, innocent bystanders, and comedy relief. I can't even begin to really give a good account of the storyline (okay, I confess, I don't really understand the timeline/storyline and I haven't sorted it out), it's just something that has to be experienced. Just a warning for the gore, it's excessive at certain times.

The nice thing about the large cast of characters is that if there are some who irritate you, you don't have to get stuck watching them for too long. The anime is always switching off to someone else, sometimes pretty quickly. I rather liked the canon pairings and liked the unrealistically upbeat ending of the series (not necessarily "happy," just...upbeat). It's just fun, if this is your kind of fun. Well, once you get past the first episode, which is interesting but somewhat tedious and not that indicative of the rest of the series.

I'd like to watch an English dubbed version of this. The period details are very nicely showcased, so much so that it's kind of odd when the characters talk in Japanese.

Completely beside the point, I came across some slash fanfic while looking for more info. Wow, I totally didn't see that coming. I suppose I should have expected it because everything is slashed, but the canon couples are so much more compelling than any potential slashing it took me totally by surprise. :P
