I totally slept too late last night thanks to a fabulous (and LONG) AU in a fandom I'd absolutely no knowledge of or interest in: Sixteen Days in September by tevere, a Generation Kill Brad/Nate AU where Nate (who is, in canon, a lieutenant in the Marines) joins the Peace Corps and gets caught up in the East Timor elections in 1999. Brad is one of the Marines that ends up guarding him. I knew (and still know) very little about the book/series, but I got totally sucked in. Riveting, with the attraction between the two more like a spice to make the harrowing narrative better. *_*

Then I woke up the next morning and looked for fics. Couldn't spend too much time before work, but I did find The Road Not Taken by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis. Another AU, this time where Nate doesn't join the Marine Corps and becomes an English professor. Rather over the top, but so much fun. Nate teaches a seminar called "The Fraternity of Men," and the conversations he has with his students (all ex-Marines) are hilarious. Brad as stalker is creepy but hot. I felt for Nate, though it was so fighting the inevitable.

I love AUs. LOVE. And when I have time I really want to find more good fics in this fandom. But not get too sucked in.

But I read more Generation Kill fanfics. Most just didn't work for me, but I did find a delightful one that made up for the meh-ness of the rest: On How Sergeant Colbert is Nothing At All Like Winnie the Pooh, and Other Important Lessons That Can Be Learned While Observing the Sergeant Laying under a Jeep by sparky77. Just the title is made of win, but the fic just gets better. A tidbit:

"Hey, Sergeant," Lilley shouts in the general direction of the hummer. "Tell Ray to stop making shit up about you."

"The Sergeant can't talk right now," Ray says after a moment. "He's busy achieving enlightenment by staring at the underside of a Hummer. Gather round, kiddies, and your Uncle Ray-Ray will tell you a story about the great Sergeant Colbert's formative years."

"It's amazing," Poke observes. "I can actually see the words coming out of your ass."

"Stop looking at my ass, then."
