Today I've been rereading a wonderful Hikago novel doujinshi that I hadn't touched in a while. It's actually written in a style that takes me a (comparatively) long time and a lot more concentration to read, so I don't pick it up all that often. But I do love how the author has this ability to clothe utterly hilarious, almost gag, humor in a completely serious and straightforward tone. Also, she is amazingly good at run-on sentences. One does see rather long sentences in Japanese a lot more than in English, but rarely have I seen so many super duper long sentences used so well. She has the flow and rhythm down perfectly, so that I am delighted in her ability to maintain the momentum in the rather convoluted structure of some of her sentences.
It's interesting that all the authors of the really kick-ass novel doujinshi that I've met have all been in their upper twenties or thirties, including the one I mention above.
Finished volume 6 and am now onto volume 9. I randomly opened it and started reading, which put me smack dab in the middle of Vicente the weirdo hour. I...have to confess that I am slowly becoming addicted to seeing the creepy freakiness of Vicente and his dealings with Kaito. The man is a total freak, so much so that I can't quite dislike him. I was incredulous reading the passages in volume 6 where we find out he dreams about Kaito every night, dreams in which Kaito looks up to him with trust and adoration. He figures it's destiny that they met, that he should be the one standing next to Kaito? If that wasn't enough, then I flip to some conversation between Kaito and Vicente in which we get more of Vicente's freaky POV. He's both ultra-paranoid over everything he says in case he closes Kaito off from him, and yet says he's patient and willing to wait for Kaito to come around? Let's be a little more contradictory, shall we? He's jealous at people who manage to draw Kaito's interest, wondering why he sucks so badly. He even wonders if Kaito just likes people with blonde hair, and I bet he seriously contemplated (for just a second) bleaching it. The dude is just... infatuated. ^^; I think I'm starting to agree with
wednesday_10_00 that Vicente is going to go gay for Kaito. I hope he squirms a lot when that time comes. I will laugh at him with glee, but probably end up feeling really sorry for him beause I foresee much awkward patheticness. Even Nigel, who is usually made out to be on the awkward side, is suave and open compared to him (I guess one should call it for what it is: repression).
I forgot to mention regarding volume 7, I enjoyed the sex scene between Kaito and Geoffrey. It wasn't incredibly graphic (or at least incredibly focused on the graphic details). It was more focused on the emotional part, and I do like Geoffrey's brand of seme. He's so straightforward, and uses his vast experience to make Kaito feel good. The only time he really teases Kaito is because of his own not unjustified feelings of insecurity, which he confesses later. So sweet! So bittersweet, too, since they think they have all the time in the world but are so quickly torn asunder. ^^;
The appearance of another person from the future who has timeslipped was a very interesting development. I love how she asks first if the Stones had broken up, THEN about the Vietnam War and the Queen. *laughs* I love that she had confirmation that he was from the future when she found that he was very attached to bathing. And how they dream of the food/drink they can't have in this era. My goodness, no tea in England yet? It's hard to imagine.
I know that Kaito has decided to stay in the past, but will the author have him go back? She did bother mentioning Kazuya and the present, after all.
I don't feel like editing my previous stuff, but I actually finished reading volume 9 and went back and finished volume 4. All I have is volume 5 left!
Oh man, the tightrope Kaito has to walk in Phillip's presence! I was tense reading about how hard it was to gauge Phillip's thoughts and feelings, and all that was at stake.
I really enjoy it when the author has Kaito reflect on fundamental differences between a person from the 16th century and someone from the 21st century. When he gives his opinion about the painting and realizes that low-born people of the era just wouldn't be able to appreciate the finer things in life such as art or music. It's so easy for people in the present to be able to appreciate the arts, if they so wish. But back then? For most people it was all about survival.
Also, how Kaito chafes at having his life so utterly at the mercy of others, in a way people from our era wouldn't be accustomed to. I can't imagine having to rely on the whims and graces of someone just because you have nothing and they were born with everything.
I enjoyed the interplay between Geoffrey, Nigel and Marlowe. I am so looking forward to reading about them pretending to be religious (well, mostly Geoffrey XD) and traveling together. And I assume there will be much excitement involved as well.

The local Daiei supermarkets were bought by Don Quixote, a chain I've heard of but never visisted in Japan. I always find it odd that they shorten the name Donki instead of Donkiho, because it feels really awkward for me. The pause I have to put between the "n" and the "ki," as well as the tendency for me, an English speaker, to think of "donkey." In any case, I found it highly amusing that one of the changes they've made was blasting music at certain displays. Today they were playing EUROBEAT. I like Eurobeat, but I'd think that kind of music might actually be annoying for a lot of people...

Date: 2006-11-13 03:45 am (UTC)I used to think that Kaito and Geoffrey will both end up in the present. But that theory began as a reason why Kaito had never heard Geoffrey's name, and of course the number of differences in this universe is increasing all the time, so I'm not so sure about that anymore. But I haven't discarded it entirely, since Matsuoka has pretty well set things up for Kaito to be able to find the portal again. (I'm not sure why he was trying to do that in the first place, but...whatever.)

Hahahaha...if it makes you feel better, 10 should be coming out soon, since the previous books have had a gap of 6 or 7 months. Actually, since the last book came out in Februrary, I think this might be the longest waiting time yet. Though it doesn't surprise me, considering the care and research that must go into this series. I just hope the next one has pictures. -_-
