DR wa ryuu ni noru (The doctor rides the dragon) is the suggestively titled first book of the Ryuu & Dr series by Kifu Kaname illustrated by Shouoto Aya. Unfortunately, Nara Chiharu only came into the picture when the series changed publishers in the third book. It is also, unfortunately, out of print. It cost me good money to get my hands on this book as well as book two (finally!), but it was all worth it!

The story really comes together, especially since Seiwa talks more in these two volumes than the rest of the series put together. I was rather surprised by how much sex there was in this. From book three almost all the sex scenes fade to black, but in the first two volumes the sex scenes are lengthy and fairly explicit. The only thing that really marred these books was the tobacco smoke wafting from the pages (I guess the previous owner was a smoker?), the odd way Seiwa spoke at times, and the not-so-pretty art. It's not that this illustrator is bad or anything...It's just hard to compete with the likes of Nara Chiharu. *shrugs*

The day starts out very typically for Hikawa Ryouichi. He has to counsel patients who don't understand what a restricted diet entails (if he can't one kind of cut of steak can he have another instead?) or that juice is not the same thing as water. He remembers the poor malnourished little boy from his childhood he'd love to mother to death if he could now...He also receives some nasty digs about the fact that he's an orphan who'd been thrown away by who knows what kind of parents by a "rival" doctor, Tada. They are "rivals" in that they are competing for the chance to stay at the relatively posh assignment at a general hospital in the city. Another doctor (a handsome dude who I think is half of the main couple of the series this book had spun-off from) shuts Tada up, telling Tada that where a person comes from has nothing to do with practicing medicine.

Hikawa is troubled by a proposal for an arranged marriage into a good family by his stepfather. He'd turned it down, but his stepfather is persistent. Hikawa thinks back on how his stepmother had proposed returning Hikawa to the orphanage once she'd given birth to a child so that he wouldn't pose any sort of a threat to her son. Despite the rather bad treatment he received after his stepbrother was born, Hikawa is grateful to his stepparents for taking him out of the orphanage (where he'd been picked on a lot) and given him a home and an education. Despite his gratitude he doesn't want to submit to their will and marry.

The normal day is interrupted when a bunch of yakuza show up and threaten Tada. They claim that he'd killed one of their guys by failing to diagnose a serious ailment and sending him home. Hikawa jumps into the middle of the whole thing when he sees a young man who looks very much like the little boy he'd cared for so much. He asks if the man is Aikawa Seiwa, but the young man tells him he has the wrong person. Hikawa insists that he wouldn't ever mistaken Seiwa, but the young man continues to deny being Seiwa. When the head director and security guard show up (trembling with fear), the yakuza take Tada aside to finish the conversation. A friendly young clerk (who I think is the other half of the couple from the series this book spun-off from) warns Hikawa to stay away from yakuza, especially since he's a doctor (who can be useful to yakuza).

The hospital is full of rumors about Tada and the yakuza. They learn that a clan member had been brought in with stomach pains. Tada had diagnosed it as a stomachache and had sent him home with medicine, but he'd died from acute appendicitis. The staff wonder if the guy had actually died or if the yakuza is just shaking the hospital down for money.

Tada doesn't come back to the hospital after that...He'd been sent to a new workplace. Hikawa is hassled by his step-father urging Hikawa to marry, saying that he wants Hikawa to be happy. Hikawa can't forget the young man who'd denied being Seiwa, so he goes to the clan's territory to seek him out. He isn't allowed to see Seiwa (though he does find out that the young man in question is actually named Seiwa) and is (rather politely) kicked out. On his way back home a hostess tries to get him into her club. Shou, a young clan member, appears to get the hostess to lay off on Hikawa and escorts Hikawa to the station. When Hikawa tries to question Shou, Shou shoves him into a taxi to send him home. Only when Hikawa gets home does he realize that Shou had probably been sent to protect him. He remembers how polite all the yakuza had been to him. He concludes that the young man of the Manabe clan must be his Seiwa.

Hikawa goes to see Seiwa after work the next day. He gets to see Seiwa, but Seiwa rejects him coldly. Seiwa slaps him, throws water on him, and tells him never to show his face again. Hikawa is shocked and hurt, but he'd seen the pain hidden in Seiwa's eyes even as he acted the scary yakuza.

The next day Hikawa has a high fever from being drenched but goes to work anyway. He gives himself intravenous fluids and manages to get through the day. He has the day off the next day, but his rest is interrupted by his stepparents, who show up with the eligible young lady they want him to marry. She nurses him, cleaning his dirty dishes and making him food.

When Hikawa's stepfather calls him at work the next day to push him to accept the marriage, Hikawa is even more troubled. He wonders if he should just go for it, since his father seems so concerned for his happiness. After work, he heads over to the Manabe clan territory again. He hides out and eavesdrops on the "young" boss Kitsutaka (the guy who'd taken Seiwa from his mom years ago and had adopted him) talking about selling the organs of those who owe them money. Kitsutaka finds Hikawa and threatens him. Hikawa either has to help the clan by doing dirty doctor things (such as organ transplant surgery) or will be swimming with the fishes in Tokyo Bay. Hikawa has no intention of compromising his integrity as a physician and is ready to face death. He is not afraid when Kitsutaka points a gun at him, instead he pleads for Seiwa to be freed from the yakuza instead. Kitsutaka explains that Seiwa is the son of the clan head, but Hikawa is adamant. Hikawa finds out that Seiwa had been in the room when Kitsutaka turns to Seiwa and addresses him. He tells Seiwa to settle this matter with Hikawa. Seiwa tells Kitsutaka that he will take Hikawa as his wife. Kitsutaka is taken aback, but quickly acknowledges Seiwa's decision. He calls Hikawa "ane-san" and asks him to take care of Seiwa. Hikawa, bewildered, is led out by Seiwa. Seiwa takes Hikawa to his penthouse suite in the clan building, on the way berating him for not taking the chance to avoid getting involved with yakuza. He'd hated being so cold to Hikawa, even going so far as hitting Hikawa and dumping water on him.

When they get to Seiwa's penthouse rooms, Seiwa asks Hikawa to move in with him. Hikawa comments that Seiwa calls him "sensei" now and not "Ryou-niichan" like he used to. Seiwa tells Hikawa that he doesn't want to call his wife "Ryou-niichan." He goes on to explain that he'd seen Hikawa kissing another guy in high school (when Seiwa was in elementary school) and had been so jealous yet helpless at the time. He explains that Hikawa can't escape from Seiwa now...He'll end up in Tokyo Bay if he tries. Seiwa picks Hikawa up and takes him to his bedroom. He gently sets Hikawa down on the bed and clambers on top of him. Hikawa can't believe what's happening. After all, he'd changed Seiwa's diapers! He starts talking about how Seiwa had peed on Hikawa the first time Hikawa had changed his diapers....But is interrupted by Seiwa, who asks Hikawa not to mention diapers again. He asserts that he's no longer a starving, helpless little kid. He's a yakuza. He takes off his shirt and shows Hikawa the tattoo of a rising dragon on his back. Hikawa is shocked and calls Seiwa stupid. Seiwa counters that it is Hikawa that is stupid. Despite Seiwa's good intentions to let Hikawa live a normal life (and suppress his desire to have Hikawa), Hikawa had doggedly pursued him and was now trapped as Seiwa's "wife."

Seiwa also tells Hikawa that they will crush the talk of arranged marriage. He explains that Hikawa General Hospital is not doing well financially, so Hikawa's stepfather is trying to secure money by marrying Hikawa off to his friend's pregnant daughter desperate for a doctor husband before she starts showing. Seiwa had investigated Hikawa's life after seeing him and had planned on helping out Hikawa from the shadows if needed. Hikawa is shocked that his stepfather hadn't been looking out for Hikawa's happiness after all. Seiwa tells Hikawa that Hikawa is too naive and kind-hearted, doing things that normal people would never do, such as taking care of a bastard son of a flashy hostess (Seiwa) or throwing himself at yakuza. He tells Hikawa to rely on him from now on. He will treasure and protect Hikawa no matter what. He gently kisses Hikawa. Hikawa complains that Seiwa had been such a small little thing and is still 10 years younger than him. Seiwa responds that he's a man now, Hikawa will learn that fact with his body...And they have sex. Seiwa, despite having never slept with a man before, gives Hikawa a blowjob and rims him. Seiwa shows flashes of jealousy at Hikawa's previous lovers (who'd all, without exception, used Hikawa as a substitute for a woman and had never done the kinds of things Seiwa is doing now to him), asking at times what they'd done to Hikawa or how many there had been. Seiwa declares that he'll never sleep with anyone else. Seiwa is incredibly considerate of Hikawa's body as he penetrates Hikawa, even willing to pull out and stop when he thinks Hikawa is suffering too much. Hikawa keeps Seiwa in him and urges him to continue. He hates it when Seiwa silently copes with not getting what he wants (a common occurrence when Seiwa had been young and deprived). Seiwa continues with the sex, shouting out "Ryou-niichan" at the climax (I can't describe how disturbed I was at that little detail XDXD;). They cuddle afterwards until Seiwa gets a call from the wife of the clan head. He reports that he'd made Hikawa his wife and had fucked him.

Seiwa asks after HIkawa's body, worrying that he'd been too rough. Hikawa puts on his glasses and takes a look at Seiwa's cock. He comments that it'd been so small before. He indicates how small with his fingers. He notices that Seiwa's Mongolian spots are gone as well. He's amazed at the passage of time. Seiwa is speechless. Hikawa looks back and forth between Seiwa's face and cock, still amazed at Seiwa's growth. Seiwa tells Hikawa that he hasn't changed at all. Hikawa replies that he's aged and become old. Seiwa flushes slightly and responds that Hikawa is still beautiful, just like a doll. Hikawa notes that there are tons of gorgeous women around Seiwa, but Seiwa insists that Hikawa is the fairest one of them all. Seiwa tries to get Hikawa to quit his tough job--he'll take care of Hikawa. He assures Hikawa that his money is made honestly, through day-trading (he makes so much money he basically supports the clan). But Hikawa wants to have a way to make money to help Seiwa out if something should happen--typically yakuza women sell themselves to support their man, but as he can't really do that he will work as a doctor instead. They talk some more until Seiwa becomes aroused again. He escapes into the bathroom to take care of his erection as he doesn't want to overburden Hikawa with his youthful vigor. Hikawa hadn't been adverse to another round and is surprised that Seiwa isn't a savage like he thought yakuza would be.

Hikawa moves into Seiwa's rooms and begins his days as Seiwa's wife, chauffeured to and from work by Seiwa's trusted underling Shou. He doesn't provide his new contact info to his stepparents and ignores his stepfather's attempts to contact him.

One day after work, Hikawa finds Seiwa sitting in the waiting car. They go to dinner (after Hikawa tries to convince Seiwa to eat at home, he proposes deciding whether to eat out or go home with a round of janken-po (rock-paper-scissors), is shocked when he loses and goes on and on about how Seiwa had always played rock first...) with Riki and Shou. Hikawa doesn't want the underage Seiwa to drink alcohol and tries to get him to drink something else ("there's a good boy, Seiwa-kun, you should drink juice," etc) while Shou tries his hardest not to die laughing. Riki simply comments that neither Kitsutaka nor the clan head can hold their heads up against their wives.

The dinner is interrupted when some incident occurs at clan headquarters. Riki and Seiwa head toward out to deal with the trouble while Shou is given the task of escorting Hikawa home safely. They run into a beautiful woman named Kyoko. She used to be Seiwa's lover (or at least one of them), but Seiwa had broken things off with her when he'd taken Hikawa as his wife. She hasn't acknowledged that things are over. She can't understand why he'd go for a guy when he's not in prison (she calls Hikawa an "anko", which is slang for a guy who's a woman-substitute in prison). Shou hustles Hikawa along. He assures Hikawa that things are over between Seiwa and Kyoko, Seiwa had properly paid her off after all. Hikawa accepts Shou's assurance on the matter. He then brings up the trouble that Seiwa and Riki are attending to. He presses Shou until Shou tells Hikawa that there's trouble within the clan since Seiwa is trying to push the clan towards a less traditional and illegal path while others still cling to old ways of making money (such as drugs). Shou tells Hikawa not to worry about or think about the clan too much. He simply needs to be with Seiwa and smile for him.

Hikawa tries to go to sleep, but is too worried to. He lays in bed for hours until Seiwa comes home. Hikawa confirms with the warmth of Seiwa's body next to his in bed that Seiwa is safe, and falls asleep.

When Hikawa wakes up, Seiwa is sleeping next to him. Hikawa peers into Seiwa's face, seeing the remnants of the innocent boy Hikawa had known and loved so well. But he is filled with mischievous glee at Seiwa's morning wood and pokes at it. Seiwa (who I suppose was already awake) asks Hikawa what he's doing. Hikawa simply marvels at Seiwa's maturity. Seiwa, unfazed, responds that he has indeed grown up. Hikawa then launches into a happy reminiscence of Hikawa's adorableness as a child. He recalls how Seiwa had made such a mess when he ate ice cream. He compliments Seiwa for learning to eat so neatly. Seiwa, in the meantime, says nothing. His cock, however, deflates. Hikawa gives Seiwa a good morning peck on the cheek and gets up to make breakfast. As he serves Seiwa (the slightly burnt) bacon and eggs, he thinks about buying a coffee maker since Seiwa likes coffee (he does too, but he typically settles for instant). Seiwa hands Hikawa two platinum cards and a savings account passbook with a huge balance for Hikawa to use as he sees fit. Seiwa tells Hikawa he will have Hikawa live luxuriously, just as he'd told Hikawa that first night. Just as Hikawa remembers Seiwa's miserable childhood, Seiwa remembers Hikawa's rather awful childhood as well. Hikawa would rather save the money since the economy is not doing particularly well. Seiwa asks Hikawa to not use his own salary on everyday living.

Seiwa then asks Hikawa if he'd heard from his stepfather. Hikawa had gotten calls on his cell phone, which he'd ignored, and at work, which he'd been luckily too busy at the time to take. Hikawa asks Seiwa if he'd heard something. Seiwa says no, but Hikawa presses Seiwa. He can tell when Seiwa is lying. Seiwa admits he (or his people?) had been contacted by some detective agency hired by Hikawa's stepfather. Hikawa is shocked by his stepfather's actions, but Seiwa isn't. He knows just how bad things are with Hikawa General Hospital--lots of debt, inability to secure more credit, employees holding the hospital's dirty secrets regarding hushed-up malpractice stealing money from the hospital, Hikawa's stepmother spending money like water...Hikawa does feel grateful that they taken him out of the orphanage, but knows he can't help them out the way they want him to and feels helpless. Seiwa, though, is firm--don't deal with them. I will. He'd actually used the detective agency to let Hikawa's stepparents know that Hikawa is involved with yakuza and that they should keep away. He asserts that he will do what is necessary to protect his name and honor (which includes protecting his wife). Hikawa teases Seiwa by noting that though he's supposed to be Seiwa's wife he hadn't even gotten a wedding ring. Seiwa is struck speechless, but then offers to take him that day to buy one. Hikawa laughs that he was just joking. He can't wear it to work, after all. Instead, he'd like Seiwa to help organize his things and go shopping. They need staples like toilet paper and rice. Seiwa drives Hikawa to a shopping mall with Riki following in another car as guard while Hikawa marvels that Seiwa can drive. He hadn't even been able to ride a tricycle when he was small!

Hikawa is delighted to be out and about with Seiwa, shopping for the food he will cook for him. Seiwa wonders if Hikawa will have the time to cook with his hard schedule, but Hikawa is determined to feed Seiwa nutritious food. Riki finds the whole scene rather bizarre, with these two very different guys acting just like a typical married couple.

After they get home, Seiwa does all the grunt work of moving stuff around. As he lies on the floor, exhausted, Hikawa starts to pat his head. He finds Seiwa adorable and ends up hugging him tightly. Seiwa warns Hikawa from clinging to him too much. Hikawa asks if he's hot, but Seiwa just tells Hikawa that he can only endure so much. When Hikawa realizes what Seiwa is talking about, Seiwa flushes a bit and turns away. Hikawa tells Seiwa that he's fine with having sex. When Seiwa double checks if Hikawa is really okay, Hikawa wraps his arms around Seiwa's and kisses him. He suggests they go into the bedroom. Seiwa picks Hikawa up and they have sex. Seiwa is again extremely solicitous of Hikawa's well-being, always concerned that he's not hurting Hikawa and making sure Hikawa feels lots of pleasure.

Hikawa goes to work the next day. On the way home, Hikawa tries to get Shou to stop the car to help a homeless man. Turns out the homeless man had been a company president who was so bad he'd even tried to mess with Seiwa. But Seiwa had driven him off instead. He'd been spared his life only because he wasn't a yakuza. Back at the building, Hikawa is bothered by a former clan member who'd been kicked out. The former clan member tries to appeal to Hikawa but Shou drives him off. Hikawa goes to his apartment.

Hikawa receives a visitor--Kyoko. She's come to demand satisfaction. She is a relative of the clan head's wife and had been going with Seiwa as a prelude to marriage (or so she'd thought!). She wants Hikawa to give her two of his fingers in the yakuza manner as recompense. However, Hikawa is a doctor and needs his fingers. So instead she demands money--a billion yen (~$10 million). Hikawa doesn't have that kind of money, of course. He offers to pay monthly, but she won't hear of it. She calls Toudou, a man who will lend Hikawa the 10 billion yen (interest is 10% for 5 days). They pressure Hikawa to sign, but Hikawa is understandably hesitant. There's no way in hell he can pay all that money back, especially with that kind of interest. Instead, he asks her to come back tomorrow. He will bring a scalpel and anesthetics from the hospital and give her the two fingers she wants. Kyoko wants it right now. She starts looking for a knife (The narrative notes that Kyoko doesn't care for the money or the fingers, she just wants to make Hikawa suffer and cry). Hikawa wants to at least disinfect the cutting board, but Kyoko is hysterical. She wants immediate satisfaction! But they are interrupted by the arrival of Seiwa and Riki.

Seiwa tells Kyoko that they are finished. He had paid her 200 million yen, after all. But to her it's a "mere" 20 million yen--not nearly enough to make up for the fact that he'd fucked her three times a week. Seiwa has to save his own face by satisfying the honor of his former woman, so he offers to pay her the billion yen she wants. She accepts, throwing in some insults about how he'd turned into an ass-chasing laughingstock. He borrows the money from Toudou (who is actually the head of a small yakuza clan with brotherly ties to the Manabe clan head). Toudou offers to forgo the interest if Seiwa pays him back in four days, but Seiwa promises him the interest. Toudou has no problem with that. All parties satisfied, Toudou and Kyoko leave along with Riki.

Seiwa has Hikawa sit on the sofa and starts out by pointing out that it was "Ryou-niichan" who'd taught him not to go with strangers or be lured by candy or, most importantly, let strangers into the house. Seiwa had never introduced either of those two, and yet Hikawa had let them both in. Seiwa asks why Hikawa hadn't relied on him for money or whatever rather than trying to resolve the situation on his own. He asks Hikawa to depend on him for anything from now on.

Hikawa's rather befuddled by the whole thing, but he did catch Kyoko's "three times a week" comment. He asks why Seiwa doesn't fuck him three times a week. Seiwa replies that he'd been treasuring Hikawa and didn't want to put too much of a burden on him. Hikawa is worried about Seiwa's reputation and about the money Seiwa has to pay back. Seiwa assures him that he can take care of himself AND his wife. He assures Hikawa that he will protect Hikawa forever. Hikawa is filled with tenderness for Seiwa and hugs him. He climbs onto Seiwa's lap and asks him to fuck him three times a week as well. Seiwa asks if Hikawa is okay with being fucked so hard he can't stand up. When Hikawa responds that he is, they have passionate sex on the sofa (with Seiwa muttering about how he'll never ever let Hikawa go and how he won't let anyone bitch about anything).

The next day Hikawa has to call in sick because he can't move much. Seiwa decides to work in his rooms instead of downstairs to be near Hikawa. He's busy doing major day-trading to make the money he has to pay back to Toudou in five days. He manages to make six billion in five days (I assume he had five billion already?). Hikawa is amazed at the whole business, commenting that it feels rather silly for him to work so seriously. Seiwa offers to let him live a life of play and leisure, but Hikawa is fired up to increase his skills in case he ever has to work to support his darling Seiwa.

There's a short side story about Seiwa back in the days when he was a student: serious and not at all interested in becoming a yakuza. One day Kitsutaka decides that Seiwa needs to become a man and takes him to a hostess club. Seiwa can choose whomever he wants to be his first woman. Seiwa chooses an older woman named Shino. They go to a hotel, where she coyly asks why he'd chosen her out all the beautiful women in the room. He'd chosen her because she reminded him of Hikawa, but it's not like he can tell her that. In any case, they have sex (which he isn't adverse to but isn't massively excited about). It doesn't much change him. One of Kitsutaka's trusted underlings mistakes Seiwa's indifference as repressed homosexuality and puts the moves on him. Seiwa, however, is not gay (he's gay only for Hikawa!). He puts up a fight. The underling is a pro at fighting but Seiwa is not unfamiliar with fighting (he'd had his share of fights, being the stepson of a yakuza, but he'd made sure word of them didn't get back to his stepparents or anyone else). He manages to escape, though with some serious bruises. His stepmother, long familiar with the aftereffects of a fight, realizes he's hurt. She treats his wounds and doesn't get too nosy. Kitsutaka, however, is delighted. He'd heard from his underling that the underling had done something to Seiwa and they'd gotten into a fight (neither the underling nor Seiwa mentions the reason). His son isn't just a serious honor student! Seiwa doesn't want the underling to cut off a finger or do anything drastic--he just doesn't want to see him again.

I'm always amused by the crackness of this. ^^ Seiwa making a billion in three days is specially cracktastic. XD What the hell is 'his honest job'?

Thank you for summarizing it.

Day-trading is a perfectly respectable occupation! You know, one step up from a mere gambler...

You're welcome!
