evangelion: 2 you can (not) advance

insanenekoJust saw it, it was the last movie of the Hawaii International Film Festival. Wow. It was very different from the TV series...I want to see it again.
One *really* nice change...The kids are more likable! And have more agency! Even Shinji!
One *really* annoying thing...Surely they had the budget to hire decent voice actors for the English parts! Why make it so painful! Me and one other guy, the two people in the group who could understand Japanese well, confessed to tuning out the "English" and reading the Japanese subtitles, it was so painful. Kaji's voice actor doing English was pretty painful as well, but at least that was understandable.
I didn't realize Sakamoto Maaya played the new girl! She was fun, if totally nuts. XD;
Also, Kaworu shows up in a really dramatic fashion! And is suitably creepy and gay!
I'm more excited than I thought I'd be...I must try to forget this movie until the next one comes out...I have no idea where this rebuild is going, it's just so different at this point. >_<
The unnaturally happy music in two battle scenes TOTALLY DIDN'T WORK FOR ME. OMG, so bad. It really ratcheted down the tension, pain, and angst. Especially the Eva 01 dummy system eats the Eva turned Angel one. Blerg.
I was surprised that they stuck Asuka in the Eva turned Angel. She's out of commission for the rest of the movie! But it made things a lot more personal for Shinji, so his anger and bitterness is so much more real afterwards.
I like the whole cooking thing they added. Shinji cooking for everyone! Rei attempting to learn to cook! Even Asuka trying it out! It was very very cute. It made the connection between Rei and Shinji stronger and set things up for the bizarre end of this movie. I like that Eva 01's awakening is due to Shinji's will to get Rei back, and that Shinji fought for her. Rei and Shinji's moment together was creepily sexual but still sweet...I suppose that hasn't changed from the TV series. ^^; They seem so much more human in this movie, tho. Glad to see it.
Kaworu! He is love! So gay! So creepy! He gets the best line of the movie! I can't wait to hear him spout more creepy and gay things! I will miss his creepy bonding with Shinji, but from his grand entrance I can hope that they provide the fanservice. XDXD
