I happened to be going through a pile of books I'd bought in Japan last year when I came across Hajimari wa mado deshita by Nakura Waki and illustrated by Abe Akane. I first heard about it via an Amazon Japan suggestion email. I posted about it a while back:
Another Amazon Japan rec, this time one I want to read: Hajimari wa mado deshita. by Nakura Waki. The title, which basically is "it started with a window," says it all! A middle-aged middle management type is checking out his crotch at work (for some unexplained in the blurb reason) and is seen by a window washer. He tracks down the guy to get him to keep it quite, and they hit it off. They probably start off as improbable friends, but of course it becomes romantic. It sounds stupid, but it hits me in the right places (middle-aged manager type uke yes!). I haven't read any of this author's books, so I can only hope it won't suck when I actually read it. :P
I picked it up pretty early in my trip and I know I read it when I was traveling in Japan, but I couldn't remember the story or my reaction to it. So I reread it. I must say, I love it! The reason the manager was checking out his crotch is innocuous: someone had spilled VERY hot coffee on his crotch. He was changing his pants and underwear and wanted to make sure he hadn't been damaged in such a sensitive area. He finds the window washer and makes him sign a document saying he'll never mention it to anyone because he's kind of an uptight guy. The story quickly becomes romantic because window washer guy is gay and very straightforward. He likes older men who are good and dedicated to their jobs. Manager guy is straight and is thrown off by the whole business. He's in denial and confused for a while, but soon they are a couple. It was weird yet thoroughly refreshing reading a book that was low on the drama and hysterics. Complications and misunderstandings happen, but they aren't blown up into huge angsty messes. The two of them are mature adults and deal pretty well with whatever. They aren't perfect...but that'd be boring! Mostly, they are adorable. Window washer totally hit my "younger adoring seme who is loyal and nurturing and sweet" spot. Manager is uptight, but he's reasonable and doesn't have much of that stupid uke shame thing going on. And he's honest about his feelings towards the seme once he figures them out. They are a sweet couple I can see being together for a long time. ♥
The only problem is the FUGLY ART. I tried to avoid looking at any of the pics because they ruined the great reading experience for me. :P
