quick thoughts

Did not know episode 3 was a cliffhanger. I'm actually not gnashing my teeth about it, amazingly. Moriarty was pretty damn hilarious (if annoying as hell). I enjoyed episode 3, but I think I found episode 1 to be better overall. Maybe. I'll have to rewatch. I thought episode 1 was very tight. Episode 3 sprawled a bit, though the pacing was great.
Episode 2 was so weak in comparison! Plus, that whole "Orientals" are so exotic and mysterious and dangerous and whatever thing was frustratingly annoying. I wanted to spork someone when John and his date (I can't remember her name right now) were kidnapped and they used the crossbow thing to get John (aka Sherlock, LOL) to 'fess up.
Must find fanfic now. I'm curious as to how the fangirl imagination resolves the cliffhanger.
I'm a bit tipsy and can't think straight, so that's it for now.

Date: 2010-11-22 11:45 am (UTC)The Orientalism of episode 2 was incredibly grating! Particularly after the first episode made a point of not including any reference to the original story's dumb anti-Mormon subplot--because of that, when the second episode came around and they layered on the clichés with a trowel I thought, "aha, there's going to be a clever subversion of all this!"...and there totally wasn't. Bah!

Date: 2010-11-28 06:30 am (UTC)I've never read the original so I didn't know there was an anti-Mormon subplot. I'm glad they chucked that! I didn't even hope for a clever subversion in episode 2. I just hoped they'd tone it down after a while; instead, it got worse and worse....

Date: 2010-11-22 12:21 pm (UTC)The cliffhanger was unexpected but at least when I saw the series on TV (in early September in Canada) we knew by then that a second season had been approved... the British had not known it when they watched episode 3 in July...
Personally I loved episode 3 for the pool scene and that brief moment when you can see that for a minute Sherlock felt betrayed thinking JOHN was Moriarty and behind all this until John revealed the Semtex underneath his coat... but episode 3 was very talkative and was a bit harder for me to follow all the deductions. For that, episode 1 is my favorite.
Episode 2 I only liked the scene with the Sherlock holding John's head and trying to help him remember what he saw on the wall (I hope to god you downloaded the series not watched the PBS version or else you won't know what I am talking about since PBS cut it like many other scenes they cut).
As for fanfiction, there are great stuff over there.
