I took a nap in the middle of the day and felt rather funky afterwards...mostly looked at random shit online and, well, felt funky. I saw the Yukikaze manga lying on the floor and been somewhat "productive" and translated part of the it. :P
p099
"Papa!"
"Welcome home, Papa!"
"Papa, look at my cards."
"Where?"
"I was holding them!"
"Aren't they over there?"
"No!"
p100
"You can't look at them."
"I'm going to surprise you, Papa."
p101
"Papa"
"Are you going to leave right away again?"
p102
"The 402nd have all been shot down!"
"Lieutenant, we've been locked on!"
p103
"Two high speed missiles, rapidly approaching! Distance 40 km. 10 seconds until contact."
"We can't evade!"
"Calm down!"
p104
"I was almost killed by Yukikaze."
p105
"It's not a laughing matter."
"I couldn't understand Yukikaze's movements."
"Right after we switched to the auto maneuver system, Yukikaze intercepted the JAM missiles in an unbelievable maneuver."
"It isn't a laughing matter at all, you might truly be killed by Yukikaze one day."
"Impossible."
p106
"How can you assert that? Yukikaze can fight quite perfectly without you."
"Or rather, humans might simply be a hindrance for Yukikaze to utilize her true ability."
"--What is it you want to say?"
"--I think that Yukikaze doesn't care for you as much as you think."
p107
"Major Bukhar"
"How is the conversion to UAVs of the SAF going?"
"It is proceeding as scheduled. I was about to submit a report. But rather than that, about the FRX development project,"
p108
"--I am thinking of modifying it."
"What foolishness. Even though the FRX will be finished next week? Any modification is impossible."
"I want to propose using SAF pilots as instructors for the unmanned FRX."
"That's a contradiction. It won't be unmanned."
"It'll be provisional. Once the instructional period for the FRX passes, we can make it unmanned."
"I don't think that's a bad proposal, but I don't know if you can get System Commands to agree--"
"I'll make them."
p109
"System Commands isn't that easy to convince. I can only say do your best."
"Papa, are you all right?"
"I'm fine...I just finished."
p110
"You're sweating terribly. Do you feel unwell?"
"I'm fine now. I'm not very good with heights."
"Even though you're a pilot?"
"It doesn't bother me when I'm in a fighter."
"I'm sorry to make you work when it's been a while since you've visited, but I have one more request."
"That's fine."
"Go to your mother."
p111
"Close the door, Jack."
"Jaime always sat there."
p112
"He was always drawing airplanes on the paper napkins he brought home from restaurants here."
"Saying he wanted to be a pilot like his father"
"He drew so many"
p113
"You know that Alicia is seeing a doctor?"
"Yes"
p114
"She's receiving medication because she can't sleep."
"And you believe her?"
"I don't want to say it like this, but you were flying on fighter planes while Jaime was doing badly."
p115
"You came back three weeks after his accident."
"Alicia is a deeply hurt by what happened to Jaime and that you had chosen your job over your family."
"It isn't something I should be saying, but I don't want to see her suffer anymore."
"Please Jack, stop flying."
p116
"Come back to your family."
"I will talk with Alicia."
"Please."
p117
"Wait, Jack."
"Open the rightmost drawer over there."

p119
"I can't take them."
p120
"Where are we going?"
p121
"I'll show you the FRX."

"I have Yukikaze."
p122
"Yukikaze will be become unmanned."
"If you don't want to fly the FRX, then you'll have to quit being a pilot."
p123

p124
"Is that right."
"Mama is waiting for me."
"Okay."
"Be gentle to your mother for me as well."
p125
"Is that your answer?"
p126
"I understand."
End Chapter 04
This chapter really drew me for some reason. I suppose it's because I had heard before that Rei had a crappy life (which he did...poor boy...I mean, not only was he the lone survivor of a wonderful family murder-suicide carried out by his father and didn't talk for a year after that, but he was even betrayed by his probably most trusted criminal associate who turned out to be an undercover cop...), but I didn't realize that Jack had been married. In many ways his situation is typical of the guy who isn't there for his family because of his work, but what intrigues and confuses me is how the scenes set in Fairy and the scenes with his family that the manga switch between have to do with each other.
I ended up rewatching a good part of the first two episodes of the OVA to figure out some of the English equivalents of terms...gads, those eyes just slay me every time. Such melting, expressive eyes. Especially Jack. He just oozes some undefinable something when he's looking at/thinking of Yukikaze and/or Rei.

Date: 2005-03-15 08:08 am (UTC)Rei's background explains quite a bit about him. And it's strange thinking about Jack having had a family...Watching the OVAs, it's easy to think of the characters as living in some sort of limbo with no real connections except each other in the present.

How long, you think, before you go for the novels? (just 2 of them, after all) ^___^

All the best at work for you and I'm sure we're all looking forward to the weekend. ^_^

Date: 2005-03-17 11:25 am (UTC)Oh yeah... where hopefully I won't be mind-dead!
And yeah... we'll tandem on harassing poor insaneneko for details and stuff. She'll rue the day I got her into Yukikaze :)

Date: 2005-03-16 07:21 am (UTC)the dark sideyour fangirl impulses and go all out.I know what you mean about these characters living in limbo...I wasn't sure why it surprised me so much that Jack had been married until I read your comment. Rei's background only confirms that he was alone his whole life, but Jack was part of a real family once. A real family he made.

Date: 2005-03-17 11:06 am (UTC)The people living and fighting on Fairy are so segregated from the rest of the population it's even reflected in how they refer to each other - "Earthlings" and "space aliens". It feels like we're on the outside looking into the bubble that is their world. Considering what Rei went through it's even more surprising (and significant) that he has the relationship he has with Jack, if we want to connect manga canon to anime canon. I smell fanfic fodder. XD

Date: 2005-03-15 04:45 pm (UTC)And the scene switching? It's defining Jack's motivations. He desperately wants to save the little boy in trouble this time; Rei. Which means he takes Rei's situation very personally - *grins* interpret that however you want, (ie: sexual, platonic, fatherly) but it just reinforces how much he cares about Rei, particularly as contrasted against the statements he offers Rei that Yukikaze's protection of him may not be as benign as he believes. [Was 'Jamie' sucked into something he thought was good for him? Only to have it turn on him? ie: an even closer parallel to Rei/Yukikaze?]
About Jack being married before - that's no surprise to me, and, indeed, I would probably have been more surprised had he not been, knowing military life. *grin* Remember, the members of the FAF on Fairy are the outcasts, criminals sometimes, and those running away from other things (like the composition of the old French Foreign Legion). In Jack's case, a marriage gone very wrong? A drug-abusing wife? A lost child? Check out the divorce rate for pilots, doctors, police - people who end up spending more time at their jobs than otherwise. It's staggeringly high.
I suspected before, but this pretty much confirms it for me, that Jack's interest in Rei was supposed to be more father/brotherly, but I wasn't quite sure WHY. However, I also think that Gonzo -- being the fairly savvy dudes they are, particularly with the example of the staggeringly HUGE success Gundam Wing enjoyed once it had captured the FEMALE market (by deliberately making the sexuality of all these pretty soldier-boys ambiguous), wanted to grab a wider audience for this war-planes-scifi thing too, so they played-up that part of Jack and Rei's relationship to get the interest of the Boy's Love fans. This is just my two cents, mind, but I wouldn't put it past them... *grins*
Ah, forgive the long, rambly post... but I really do appreciate this translation! Thank you again!! (and to Manon for the linking!)

Date: 2005-03-16 07:30 am (UTC)I realized why I was so surprised that Jack had been married when I read mitethe's comment above...they are so cut off from the real world that it felt odd that they had any kind of normalcy before. Rei certainly didn't. We learned that he was almost always alone and alienated.
I can see your point about Jack's interest in Rei being more fatherly, especially since the original novels are from what I understand more or less hard SF. But...I certainly won't object to any intentional emphasis Gonzo may have added in the relationship. :D In the end though, the OVA and manga (and thus perhaps the novels) seem to have fairly different feels and focuses I don't really tie them that closely together.
