In my recent order I received the Sentou Yousei Yukikaze Kaisetsu Manual which I haven't really read yet. ^_^; However, what I found very interesting were the profiles of a whole slew of characters (many of whom must appear in the book but not the anime). Since I am currently in a translating frenzy I decided to tackle the ones I recognized. I kind of ran out of steam after the main two, but I did translate the minimum stats on the names I did recognize from the anime. ^_^

Fukai, Rei

Male. 29 years old. Captain in the FAF. Pilot of the Yukikaze, formerly SAF Jet 3, now Jet 1. From Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. After graduating from the Tokyo Institute of Data Processing, he joined a company. HIs relations with his coworkers not going well, he set a fire at his company, was found guilty and was sent to the FAF. He gained experience in tactics and combat as pilot of the Sylphid and was assigned to the SAF. He retired from military service once, but volunteered for the FAF again. His slender yet muscular body and narrow yet well formed facial features gives a cool impression. He could only be called him handsome physically, but due to his childish personality that is only concerned with himself, all of his relationships with women on Earth ended in failure. An elite even within the SAF, he has various unique experiences through contact with JAM.

Bukhar, James

Male. 36 years old. Major in the FAF. SAF inspector general. From the United Kingdom. Born and raised in Sheffield. Attended a calligraphy class a Japanese woman held in her home. When he was eighteen, he got to know Anne Taylor, who would later become his wife, in the class. At the time, Anne was attending Sheffield's Centre for Japanese Studies to become a researcher of Japanese culture. Aspiring to become a sculptor, Bukhar entered a private art school. Married to Anne at 20. At 21 gave up art with the sculpture he created as his graduation piece. Living wildly, his life with Anne failed as well. At 22 he was involved in a case of assault and was sent to the FAF. He officially divorced Anne half a year later. She was said to have reminisced that "Jack and I are too similar, We should have stayed friends." Anne continued her research after that, and is currently a professor of Japanese art and cultural history at Sheffield. Jack received special training, became a pilot of the Fand, then the Sylphid, and was assigned to the SAF. He served harsh missions as an SAF pilot until his early 30s. He extended his military service and remains in the SAF. His main duties are supervising the maintenance of the aircraft and arranging personnel schedules. Deeply trusted by General Cooley, he is sent to deal in troublesome negotiations both inside and outside the SAF. Calm and diligent, gifted with the ability to get things done, and doesn't forget humor even on a battlefield, he could be called the ideal portrait of a man. With a friendliness one could not imagine from a face made ghastly by a scar on his cheek, he is Fukai Rei's closest friend. While his knowledge and skill with electronics reaches the level of an artist, he was able to become a pilot and not work in electronics because of his aptitude tests and his own strong inclination. Perhaps it was due to his impression when he was young that computers were a hobby and not something to do for a living. Or perhaps it was from a bitter experience of having failed at trying to turn a hobby into a job. His current hobbies are making boomerangs and cooking.

Burgadish, Richard

Male. (26 years old.) Second Lieutenant in the FAF. From Vermont, USA.

Cooley, Rydia

Female. 49 years old. Brigadier General in the FAF. Second in command of the SAF. From Michigan, USA. Graduated from the University of Chicago.

Foss, Edith A.

Female. 26 years old. Captain in the FAF. Belongs to the Research Institute of Battle Psychology. Assigned to the SAF. From New Jersey, USA.

Gunow, Karl

Male. 35 years old. Major in the FAF. Belongs to the System Commands Centre for Technical Development. From Würzburg, Federal Republic of Germany. Graduated from Aachen Technical University.

Jackson, Lynn

Female. 38 years old. International journalist. From Pennsylvania, USA. Graduated from the University of Washington.

Tomahawk John (Thetholich)

Male. (28 years old.) Captain in the FAF. Belongs to the System Commands Centre for Technical Development. From Yellowknife, Canada. A pureblooded Dogrib...Tomahawk John is his common name. He has an Indian name, but it can't be pronounced in English, Japanese or French.

Some notes: I had a heck of a time figuring out the proper translations of proper nouns. Real places and organizations I found via googling, but I had to do the best I could with some of the others. :P Any corrections would be most appreciated.

I did find the entire profile in Japanese online (I suppose typed in by some fan with too much time) while trying to find out the proper spelling of Dogrib, for those who can read Japanese.

If anyone wants more on any of the charas I provided basic stats on, or have other characters (I didn't remember) they want more info on, let me know.

Some fangirl observations: The backgrounds seem to be very different from the manga. Why? *is confused*

In any case, Jack is British!! I like that. And we get an explanation as to why a non-Japanese (or Chinese or whatever) can write kanji so nicely....I'm not too surprised by people's ages. Feels right.

I LOVE YOU ^___^

I already linked to my LJ and posted part of it (J&R segment) to my entry.

In any case, Jack is British!! I like that. And we get an explanation as to why a non-Japanese (or Chinese or whatever) can write kanji so nicely....I'm not too surprised by people's ages. Feels right.

I was right about Rei... I always thought Jack was about 8 years older... was NOT too far off... and it sure explained WHY he could write even sloppy kanji and do the whole Yukikaze name & paint job because heck, I can't ^_^

I wonder about the differences too... but then I guess the manual might be about the novels, NOT the anime (and it might explain Jack's scar (not in the anime)).

Some of the other ages surprised me, though... Lynn Jackson looked a LOT older to me than 38 (remember I'm myself nearly 42 and I thought she looked much older than me while in fact she's younger).

Still in love with you :) Notice though that there's no mention of a kid anywhere? And I'm not surprised Jack also did something bad that had him sent to FAF. There does not seem to be any soldier there who went the "normal" way... aka being posted there instead of being shipped there for criminal acts.

Oh... and I thought Tomahawk John was older too... 28? O.O

P.-S. 36 or 39?

The site you linked to said James Buckhar, 36.

I knew you'd be all over this. I was very excited when I first discovered it in the book and poured over the entries of our dear boys. I know the novels are different from the anime, but I would think details like age and country of origin would not change much. I totally thought Lynn Jackson was in her late forties, and I still can't quite accept her actual age...same with Tomahawk John. I thought he was in his thirties.

BTW, Cooley, Foss, Tomahawk John and Gunow all volunteered for the FAF.

^_^

I did not read much the other further than their ages... so they were volunteers, eh? Wonder if Jack having been sent by force is one other reason he sympathize (sp?) with Rei...

You should have heard me scream when I saw the entry :)... let's just say typing it does not give it justice to the ear-splitting scream I did when I saw the ages... and that Japanese site I saw a while back with pictures of the 3 as kids was right... Burgadish being 3 years younger than Rei and Jack 10 years older...

*laughs* Your LJ entry was pretty damn excited though. I think most people are excited about finally getting confirmation of their ages.

I'm thinking maybe the specialists and high ranking people are volunteers, and the actual soldiers were sent? I'm only guessing, but I think that'd make the most sense...

That would make sense... and Jack would have impressed Cooley enough that she would have had him go up the ranks even though he came there not of his own accord (but obviously stayed on willingly).

And yeah... I do tend to get excited about a few shows and of course Yukikaze being one of those, any info is exciting and welcome.

Thank you for this info, Insaneneko! You and Mirichan have really gotten me interested in this anime. (Although I'm so bad at multi-tasking, I should try to ignore other stories until I finish Mirage of Blaze. ^^; That should only take me a few years...) Anyway, thanks for the info and the translation!

yay! Men! 29 & 36. *is even happier* Interesting, 'tho... I'm wondering what the manga's drawn from then? Set a fire? Or was it armed robbery? No kids for Jack? eh... SCAR?!

Is this for the video game? *ponders*

You're welcome. I knew they were men, but it's nice to get the confirmation. And I'm so comfortable with their ages. I'm not sure how the manga fits in with this profile, which I'm assuming comes from the novels...there's a video game? I didn't know that...

And oh how glad I am that they didn't give Jack the scar in the anime.

Great translating work! now we can read official info about characters.

And Rei is 29 years old? That's odd, I thought he's 20-22 at the most. Um... nevermind, it's only my subjective point of view...

YEAH!!!

You're awesome! Thanks for the translations. I saw your entry this morning, and I was already doing my happy Yukikaze dance, except I scrolled down a bit, and I swear I heard Manon screaming like crazy. ^___^

29!!! THANKYOU. I was so desperate, I don't know how many times I paused the anime, glued my nose almost to the screen to figure if it was 28, 26, or 29! :)))

Aa...Jack is British! I like that. Somehow that explains a lot of things about him.

But but but... I was so poised ^_~

And I was right about the 29... I remember posting that in my LJ a while back after screencapping the shot and zooming on the friggin' numbers :) Nice to have confirmation. I like the fact Jack is British and not USA... nor is he Australian, finally. Guess he just likes boomerangs :)

You're very welcome! Manon's reaction was everything I thought it'd be and more. Ah, feel the fangirl enthusiasm in the air...

I remember doing the pausing and trying to make out the numbers of their ages. ^_^ So frustrating, indeed.

It felt really right that he was British and not, say, Australian or American.

Thanks for typing this up and great job on the translation! I pegged Lynn Jackson as being older too (maybe it was stress?). Though now I'm confused as to why the backgrounds are so different in each version. Guess someone will just have to read the novels to find out. XD
