tennis freak dorks only have each other
Nov. 15th, 2005 04:55 pmA line from the wonderful TezuRyo fic The Freudian Sense by
soundczech really reminded me of a really really fabulous doujinshi I recently read. The line was "Echizen Ryoma is twelve years old and everyone around him is obsessed with girls. Ryoma does not understand girls, and does not want to." (Okay, I quoted two but the second line is the important one) In the doujinshi, Ryoma was very much of that mindset, and was inundated with confessions from girls. When he complained to Momo, he got good sempai advice telling him to pick a girl and go out with her. He'll definitely get less confessions if he has a girlfriend. So the very next girl that confessed, Ryoma said okay. That first girl only lasted about two weeks before she broke up with him. He absolutely gave her no time, didn't even reply to her messages or phone calls. He was too busy with tennis. But he didn't feel any guilt because he had warned her before giving his okay that he wouldn't be able to spend much time with her (something Momo told him to say). And so he went through intermediate school having one "girlfriend" after another, being annoyed at them wanting to talk to him or do anything with him but suffering their existence because it meant he didn't have to spend so much time declining the confessions of other girls. In high school when Momo finds out that Ryoma was still doing the same thing, he's pretty disgusted. Ryoma protests that Momo was the one that told him to do that. Momo clarifies that he meant to try going out with a girl until he found someone he did like and not to go out with any old girl. Of course this is news to Ryoma, who protests that Momo did not say that. Momo retorts that he didn't think he'd need to say that. What I thought was particularly Ryoma-like was how he didn't think he was doing anything wrong. He warned the girls that tennis was very important to him, and yet they still said they wanted to go out with him, right? So it's not his fault that they want more than he is willing to give and end up going away. XD
The doujinshi focuses on Tezuka and Ryoma. It's funny how they are both total dorks (in different ways) when it comes to girls. They just aren't like normal boys, and their tennis freaks to boot. It of course ends up with them getting together, but for most of the doujinshi they don't even think of each other in that way and mostly play tennis. ^_^ I like that it took them until high school (and a bit more maturity) for them to actually fall for someone.
