I just found out that last year the author of the original Candy Candy manga wrote two volumes about Candy in her thirties, but upon reading reviews it turns out the author never reveals who Candy ends up with! She does end up with someone, but he is never named. There's debate between those who favor Albert vs those who favor Terry. In the novels you learn that Susanna dies before she and Terry are married, and that Terry sends a letter to Candy saying he hasn't changed. She also seems to get along with Albert quite well. So who does she end up with? At the end of the manga I assumed she got together with Albert. I suppose it could be some other guy other than Albert or Terry. The author says in the afterward that she didn't want to ruin people's dreams/expectations/etc by telling who Candy ends with with is, but I think she ruined those things by teasing and not revealing. At least, that's the impression I get reading some of the reviews I came across (on amazon and on random blogs).

I don't know if I want to read the novels even though the manga was a big part of my childhood (it was the only manga I had access to from around 2nd grade to high school). I like the end of the manga just fine (I hated it as a child because it was too open-ended, but I've grown to like it over the years). Or maybe I'll go look for fanfic (which one blog post I read referred to, so it must exist! I hope it's on the internet and not just on doujinshi or something) to get a post-manga fix if I want to. ^^;
