I hate being cheated out of a satisfying ending to a book. I just read most of Renai senryaku no teigi by Fuyuno Jinko, which was decent until the very last part. why I'm all aaaaaaaaaah about it )

Keen no kikoushi by Fuyuno Jinko and illustrated by Enjin Yamimaru has an English title--Prince of KABUKI. Note that the KABUKI is in all caps. I couldn't take the book seriously because of this English title, and it's a very good thing I didn't. This is a stupid book filled with stupid characters. I should've noticed the author before reading the book, since my experience with this author's books have been pretty dismal. Yes, I've liked maybe two or three books of hers. But I've probably read at least a dozen, and most of them were total crap. The only redeeming quality of this one is the art, the only reason I'm posting on it at all. I can't believe this actually has a sequel...And has a five star rating on both from one review. I feel like rating the book with one star and writing "IT'S CRAAAAP" to counter the lone review. XD;

In any case, this is about a photographer and the Prince of KABUKI who wants photographer to take pictures of him. Throw in juvenile attitudes, EBIL ex-lovers, and really lame attempts at making the Prince of KABUKI seem extraordinary, and you have a really typical BL novel.

I just read and thoroughly enjoyed DP Scanlations' recent release of the first chapter of a manga by Aida Saki and Yamada Yugi called Taka ga koi daro. First off, thank goodness for decent scanlations! I couldn't find Japanese scans so had to settle with the English, but luckily this one was good. In any case, it has one of my favorite set-ups...A single father with young son combo! In this case the young father is a widower. There are other elements in the mix that I'm not too sure about (I fear the tortured web of misunderstandings and angst that could develop), but I am rooting for hard-working dad to find true love and happiness with a good man. XD

I'm not sure I can ever get myself to read Kiseki no object, despite the fact that that Enjin Yamimaru illustrates it. I think I've found a knee-jerk anti-moe: A smexy bald Buddhist monk uke. Just...No.

One More by Fuyuno Jinko and illustrated by Asou Kai is the typical diffident nobody uke falls in love with some handsome shining popular arrogant seme, they fall into a sexual relationship full of uke-angst and seme-assholery which ends when the uke can't take it anymore and runs away. The seme doesn't see it coming because he's so full of himself that he thought the uke would never be able to leave him, no matter what crap he pulled. In this story it's six years after the uke ran away. The seme calls out of the blue and that brings back all the crap that the uke has desperately tried to suppress and get over...The book was really just too cliched for words, except for the end. The seme has a long, detailed confession and (sort of) groveling session where he swallows his pride and his stubbornness and admits all of his insecurities and all of his assholery from all those years ago, then asks the uke if they can try again. It was just fascinating hearing what was going through the seme's head when he did each and every shitty thing to the uke...I don't really recommend reading this book unless you really like this type of story, but the extended seme confession amazed me.

Ryu wo kau by Fuyuno Jinko and illustrated by Nara Chiharu features a side character in a book I had summarized before, Mitsuyaku wa suit wo nuide. I had some hopes that it wouldn't suck because I found Mitsuyaku pretty amusing, but...I was terribly disappointed. It is a completely conventional story and has the most insipid uke. Tien was rather lukewarm, as well. I suppose if Hong Kong mafia is your thing (or you really like Nara Chiharu's art) it might be worth it, but otherwise? Skip!

Code name wa hanayome by Shuhdoh Rena and illustrated by Mizukane Ryou is pure romantic fantasy fluff of the most innocuous kind. Uke is a government SP (bodyguard) assigned to protect the prince of a small European country who is marrying a girl from a very good Japanese family. The problem is that the girl disappears on the wedding day, and calling off the wedding is not possible. So the SP closest to the girl's body type and features is chosen to substitute for her, and of course it's not one of the female SPs that's chosen. Oh no, it's our dear uke. He's not exactly happy with his assignment but he's a professional and he will do his job. The wedding goes off without a hitch, but instead of being covertly dropped off he is taken to the ship the prince and his wife were supposed to get on for the prince's country. Uke is to continue pretending until they find the girl (and be an additional layer of protection for the prince) so that a switch can be made at some port along the way. On the ship the prince does a slow-motion version of sweeping uke off his feet, with an ending worthy of such effort. The uke is fairly smart, he's professional and a nice guy. The prince is...a prince. He's charming, he's sweet, he's secretly lonely, he's noble, he's gorgeous. I liked them both and wished them all the happiness in the world at the end.

The sad thing is that I read so many more books than I ever begin to mention. Many of them aren't worth even looking it up in amazon to link to it (at least IMO).

Warning: I wrote the majority of this on a crazy hyper-wired state after a long (long), trying day at work and will be posting without proofing much because otherwise I'd chuck the whole thing in the trash because it reminds me of that scary state I was in, typing feverishly late at night while a little voice in the back of my head kept reminding me I had even more stressful, trying work the next day...

In any case, please forgive any strange sentences. If they hurt you to read them, let me know and I'll fix them.

Onto the book...

Mitsuyaku wa suit wo nuide by Fuyuno Jinko and illustrated by Nara Chiharu is the sequel to Kakehiki wa bed no uwe de, which I didn't realize until I got to the end and read the afterward. I had a vague suspicion as I read it that it might be a sequel, but as the author claims you don't really need the first book to read the second. But now I do want to read it...this one was very amusing on so many levels.

Yuki Nao (WTF is up with that name? It's so awkward!) is a Japanese national working for the large American retailer Walnesmart. His lover, Joshua (pronounced with a "y" sound) Yuusuke Kurozumi, is the Japanese-American COO of Walnesmart. In other words, his boss. Yuki had previously worked for the large Japanese retailer Daieitou and had headed the effort to partner with Walnesmart, but had lost the contract and his job due to the betrayal of his former best friend and former fiancee. Having lost everything, he had gone to Las Vegas with what money he had to gamble on it and met Joshua, who apparently seduced him and brought him into Walnesmart to spearhead its renewed effort to enter the Japanese market. This all happened in the first book. The second book starts in Las Vegas, where Yuki and Joshua was reminiscing their first meeting, having a vacation, and supposedly get some work done. They are interrupted by the news that a large Japanese retailer was interested in a joint business in Japan with Walnesmart. Yuki flies back to Japan to begin negotiations with the company, Grande Citta (big city in Italian, lol) and its financial advisor. He is surprised to find out that the financial advisor was a guy he had accidentally met in Las Vegas, who seemed to know Joshua...

In any case, I won't go into more details right now. Let's just say the story is about deals and jealousy and old hurts and secrets and drugging drinks and all kinds of fun things that always show up in BL novels. I mostly got a trip out of the fact that Walnesmart is obviously Walmart, Daieitou is Daiei, and I think Grande Citta is Don Quijote. Mostly the Walnesmart part, because I just...don't really associate Walmart--excuse me, Walnesmart--with giving people second chances and camaraderie among workers and fierce loyalty (maybe among the non-retail staff?). Also, hot gay executives.

Much in the story was cliched, but the author actually managed to surprise me several times. Once a scene is set up I tend to expect certain things to happen, but many times they didn't. The uke turned out to have balls (despite his lame name and his state of uke-ness), and the seme was so mature...
