Been looking through the new releases on Amazon Japan in preparation for an order and found out that volume 14 of Haru wo daiteita by Nitta Youka, the last one, is out. I stopped reading it a while back because the story wasn't keeping me interested, but I'm tempted to buy this just because I want to know the end. I assume it's happy, but what kind of happy?

I also fell upon a new series Yoshihara Rieko had started writing in the last year or so. It's set in high school and is, according to the reviews, a cross between Kusareen no Housoku and Gaki no Ryoubun. I loved reading the reviews because people bitched about how she doesn't finish her ongoing series and what she does produce progresses slower than a glacier. I so agree! The woman should NOT write any new series if she can't finish her current ones. I want more Nijuu Rasen or Kusareen no Housoku already! And no more Ai no Kusabi...I couldn't stand the first three and have no interest in reading the new volumes in that series...

Clicked on a link to [livejournal.com profile] two_if_by_sea's 10 Unpopular BL Manga Opinions and laughed. I like reading stuff like this. I don't think I'd ever be organized enough to come up with my own, putting aside the fact that I don't really know what is unpopular. I live in my own little corner of BL. I was surprised with her #4: "The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese (and its sequel) is a better series than Doushitemo Furetakunai." because I just don't put the two in the same category...But I don't necessarily disagree either. I fully and completely agree with #6, those tropes should die die die die die. I'd add ukes with sexual experience who suddenly turn into blushing virgins when they sleep with their semes.

Shiny Haru wo daiteita pimp post! With pics! It's funny and makes me want to reread the series...

Eat Your Heart Out by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock is a terribly fun Doumeki/Watanuki fic. It starts with Doumeki getting a not-very-good pink bento for lunch. Watanuki flails and spazzes, then ends up kind of despondent. There is timely intervention and all ends well.

Only More Stupid by [livejournal.com profile] scratchmist is a cute Ouran fic featuring Kyoya and Tamaki. It's a delightful look into Kyoya's head as he first learns to deal with Tamaki. While a bit jerky at times, the shininess far outweighs those minor blips. XDXD

[livejournal.com profile] worldserpent linked to a great post about why the OP prefers print media over audiovisual media along with offering her own comments. I can never follow TV shows for long because I can't keep up the effort to follow them week after week. But what really drives me more towards books are a) that I can read at my own pace and b) that I can get into the character's heads more. More on those points:

a) Not only do I often chafe at having to watch shows real time, it's a lot harder to easily skip around. I am told that I read pretty damn fast, so I can get through a lot more story and character in a shorter amount of time through reading. Also, I sometimes like to skip around instead of plowing through from beginning to end. It's a lot easier to flip to the last five pages of a book and read them, go back a chapter and read that, go back to where I had stopped reading and pick up from there, etc. It helps me sustain interest when the material is not engaging me. I've tried with TV shows/movies/anime and always got frustrated at all that I missed (I think it's easier to scan the words even while quickly flipping and catch significant passages than catch the significant moments while fast forwarding) and having to go back anyway. Which causes me to get bogged down at the boring parts...

b) Lately I read a lot of trashy BL novels, which are full of cliches and kinks and stupid plots/characters. What keeps me from truly getting disgusted at the whole genre? In novels I can get into the character's head, which lets me become more sympathetic to his actions/reactions. Yes, often the internal narrative is exasperating as well, but it provides a context that can explain the stupidity of what occurs next. I know I wouldn't give half the BL novels I read a chance if it was an anime or a manga that was skimpy on the thoughts. In any case, I love bonding with the characters (particularly the main character). That is made so much easier when I can get into their heads.

First off, has anyone read W Juliet? Is it any good? I've seen it recced around in comms, but not in any individual journals (at least on my flist and in the journals I've poked around).

According to the anime production blog, the Fuyu no Semi (Winter Cicada) storyline from HaruDaki was inspired by a song with that title by the folk singer Sada Masashi. They are going to use the song, sung by Morikawa Toshiyuki, for the opening. I figured I wouldn't be able to find the song itself online (it's a folk song, for god's sake), but I was able to find the lyrics in Japanese. How...appropriate. Nothing like an evocation of transience to really drive in the JAPANESE-ness of the story. ^^

I have mixed feelings reading 'Manga' reading program promotes literacy among Los Angeles teens. On the one hand, whatever gets people to read is great. On the other hand...comics aren't really a substitute for pure prose.

Japundit posts:
For humor: Where Have All the Ninja Gone?
Silliness abounds, especially in the comments.

For the anime/manga squee: Kamakura Dreamin'
Haven't been to Japan in the height of summer in a very long time, so I don't recall seeing these temporary structures on the beach. The second pic reminded me of every anime/manga where students go and work as waiters/waitresses at places like this. XD

Last but not least, cute cat pics are always a good thing.

The subject explains it all, but I'm even too lazy to use an lj cut judiciously. :P I think my interest in being online is at an ebb. I've been reading (and I've read almost all the personal f-list posts that I've caught) but haven't commented much, or posted much. I've been slacking on email correspondence, and not wanting to chat. *shrugs* I suppose I'll get all into it once again at some point.

Haru chapter 43 scans were uploaded on [livejournal.com profile] youka_nitta here, and oh boy...it was long and made me very happy. I love Katou and Iwaki snuggling like an old married couple. I love how comfortable they are with each other. And once again we have one of them managing to push the other forward by just believing in him. I love their relationship. I wish we got to see some of the shoot, though. What is the director trying to do to Iwaki?

The Yamane Ayano fans did it to me again. Here I was, totally oblivious that the next Viewfinder chapter was coming out soon (is already out?), until I saw the squeeing preview posts (WITH PICS!) that made me all expectant and wanting (hm, if only I had a big bad seme that might be a good thing?). Now I'm going to be checking LJ like MAD for the next couple days until the stupid scans are posted. -_-

Downloaded some cute Wolfram/Yuuri DJ from [livejournal.com profile] kyou_kara_maou here. How I love the cuteness. XD

And in an unusual fandom for me: Seventh Son by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23, a Howl's Moving Castle fic that I think is very much in DWJ's style and hilarious to boot. Drunk Howl and angry Sophie through the eyes of a poor schmuck innocent bystander. XD

And has everyone in SGA fandom read the Teacher's Pet series? The one about John turning 8? OMG IT IS PURE LOVE. I wish I knew the characters better, but it's so fun and cute I don't think you have to know anything to enjoy it immensely (since I did, and everything I know is from fanfics). Parts 1-3, 5 and 7 are accessible here, and also Parts 4 and 6.

And onto the PoT. First off, some really old stuff I've been meaning to post about. [livejournal.com profile] prillalar made an interesting post about how PoT is not a typical sports series and why. Made me think quite a bit.

[livejournal.com profile] bookshop made a massive mulit-post PoT introductory thing (first post here) that covers the story, the characters, the gay, the fanfics, etc. It's pretty amazing stuff. I love that she didn't focus only on her OTP.

Speaking of OTP, the massive amounts of amazingly good TezuRyo just pouring out just leaves me breathless. I don't always agree with the characterizations or the relationship dynamics, but I can't help but be happy because it's good writing. A turn of phrase there, an image here...it makes me delirious with joy. Several of the many I've been enjoying:

Gravitation by [livejournal.com profile] achiasa is a lovely crack piece about the power of two opposing Tezuka Zones.

Rebirth by [livejournal.com profile] kessie, an amazing continuation to two other fics (links available at post). I love the switching between past and present, and how Tezuka is torn in a not uber-angsty way and how Ryoma knows just how to push. XD

Facing Forward by [livejournal.com profile] achiasa is the fic that has been making me just squee to death because it's pre-slash so it's ALL ABOUT THE TENNIS. I love how the coaches, after seeing the two of them play, start talking about famous tennis rivalries. And possibly my most favorite line? "Tezuka remembers looking down on Echizen from above, challenging him to climb higher; he remembers the shock and pride of realising that Echizen had taken him at his word and leapt."

I was totally stuck in traffic coming home tonight, and started rummaging through my car looking for something to keep me from raging. I first found SR Disc 2, and that made me happy as I listened to Arigatou (OH THE TEZURYONESS OF IT ALL) and Dreaming on the Radio and We Love Seigaku. I then found a mixed CD simply titled "Tenipuri." I had no clue what was on it (other than something to do with PoT) so I stuck it in. Oh, the memories. Lots of the older stuff, like Ryoma's first album songs, CROSS WITH YOU (Atobe-sama, you rock), Days of Moments (I love the two duets on Fuji's album), and so many other songs. XD
