Saw National Treasure today. Wow, that was a fun movie. There's something to be said about a movie so divorced from reality and logic, that you either have to let go or stop watching the movie at an early juncture. Thankfully I was able to let go and just enjoy the ride. Love love love the characters, the snark, the silliness. XDXD

What a difference from my reaction to Lost in Translation, which I saw last week. That movie was far too emotionally disconnected for me to even begin liking it. The passivity of the characters made me extremely annoyed, and as I am very familiar with many aspects of Japanese culture featured in the film I couldn't even connect with them on any sense of alienation. Frankly, they felt like the aliens to me. Scarlett Johansson's character in particular really made me want to kick her. She seemed insipid and pathetic and I couldn't fathom why she was married to her husband. At least with Bill Murray, he's older, tired, resigned, and I can see where some of his detachment comes from (especially through his bizarre communication with his wife). Bleah.

Lost in Translation seems to garner a lot of mixed reviews. Someone once told me I should watch it for the cultural perspective or something, but it sounds like the characters don't quite carry their roles well?

Also, would you happen to be online right now with a free moment to spare? There's an idea or two I'm tossing around and another perspective would be invaluable. XD

I need to really have some kind of connection with the characters for me to enjoy a film. If you notice my complaints stem from the utter detachment and passivity of the characters. Why bother being in Japan, except that it's exotic and makes a nice contrast with the "familiar?" *shrugs* That's just me, though.

The film was probably intended to be just what it is. You might give it a try just to see for yourself.
