eureka!

I just had one of those odd fannish moments where I realized the author of a fanfic I really liked had also written one I had major problems with, along with a very old favorite from a different fandom. There's nothing like that silly bit of delight in "she still writes!" and "she's writing in my current fandom!"

Rachael Sabotini ([livejournal.com profile] wickedwords) had written The Spare, a Harlequin SGA fic that I really, really enjoyed. I finally figured out that she also wrote Locusts and Wild Honey, a fic I was really mad at (which I will go into detail later). BUT BUT BUT what just made me want to jump up and down and flail is that she is one of the writers of the evil epic Highlander AU fic that sucked up quite a number of days that I kind of lost track of waiting for more: Seduction of a Desert Prince. I haven't read it in years but I do remember the lushness of the setting, the feel of the culture, the weight of the characterization. I need to block out some time and work through that epic again. Too bad it's not finished yet. *sighs*

In any case, Locusts and Wild Honey. Why it pissed me off. Spoilers, obviously. )

I realized today that my flist consists of very few who rec fics. I thought about trying to find some LJs to friend, don't really want to go friending rec journals. I want journals that rec fics among other fannish and/or RL posts, like mine but not as retarded. I like reading what other people think about fics, especially if I "know" (in the internet sense, not in a real or biblical sense) them.

In any case, I continue to read fics while avoiding the browsing through archive deal. That just exposes me to waay to many bad fics and I'm not that desperate yet.

We're Going to Need a Bigger Temple by Nin [livejournal.com profile] nindulgence is a cute and silly aliens made them do it fic. The details make the fic, as well as the two of them being guys. I love how they talk in code.

Lose Your Bones by [livejournal.com profile] purna, in which (as the summary says) Rodney crosses a line. His reaction is sad and understandable, and John's attempt to comfort him is realistic yet sweet.

It's cool when a fic can totally make me believe in a type of fic I usually stay far away from. I always avoided any gender switching like the plague. Well...Sometimes it can be really good, like when John becomes a woman and realizes how good being a woman can be. I love how enthusiastic he becomes about the whole deal:

But Some Things Never Stop Being Funny by shalott

I don't even like "het" smut scenes but these were just *_*.

music!

Basically this post is of music I've been addicted to these last couple of months that I hadn't bothered sharing even though I kept *meaning* to but the shiny fics and energy sucking work kind of distracted me.

Over the Rainbow (Rock Version)

The Trax is a Korean group that, well, just kicks ass. This song is the second song I heard by them, and you have no idea how many times I played it over and over and over. Great addictive rock song. I kind of wish I knew what they were saying.

The first song I heard by the group was actually another version of Over the Rainbow. Much more quiet and very pretty, but it never grabbed (and shook and thrilled) me like the rock version:

Over the Rainbow (Piano Version)

They also have recorded songs in Japanese. My understanding is that their producer (or is it their composer? I'm not sure) is Yoshiki, of X Japan fame. And I can hear the X Japan in their music, but with a voice I much prefer. I particularly like the following two songs:

Rhapsody
On the Road

Though, frankly, I like all the songs I managed to find by them. For about two weeks all I listened to was their music, looped endlessly, bgm to the SGA fics I was devouring. I will eventually buy everything they have ever put out. When I get my ass into gear (and out of fanfics) and bother ordering things. :P

I've been picking up random Korean music lately, and the songs have been very good. I have no idea what kind of group 1TYM is, but they sing well, can pronounce English properly, and have this one song that is kind of hip hop (I think) and terribly catchy and addictive and just plain evil:

How Many Time by 1TYM

On a slightly different note, I offer a very sneaky but powerful instrumental. I can't explain how good it is, but I stuck it on one of my car mixes and I found myself just engrossed by the music. It feels languid, slow-moving, deep, and yet the rhythm is driving, momentum always moving forward, seeking something nameless but beautiful and profound...and I think I have no idea what I'm talking about. It's fabulous driving at night on the freeway music. Seriously.

Nara by E.S. Posthumus

My most recent find was a group called Placebo. I have no idea if they are supposed to be well known, but they were new to me. I randomly downloaded one of their songs and stuck it on a car mix CD. After a couple of listens I found myself riveted, unable to let the piece go and having to sit in my car playing the song over and over and over and shivering at it. I eventually bough the album it was on, and was extremely pleased to find the entire album to be very very good. The vocalist, and the feel of the music, reminds me of Oasis, actually.

Sleeping with Ghosts by Placebo

I can't quite call it haunting, but it has this mood to it. I tend to imprint songs that leave an impression on me to certain fics/fandoms/pairings, and this one reminded me of the feel of certain SGA McKay/Sheppard fics. A feeling of buoyant falling, quiet destruction. Also, the first verse struck me as appropriate when I finally looked up the lyrics.

I have a lot more, but I'm tired now and must go to sleep.
