Amazon has a free mp3 for each day in December until the 25th (the link to the free music page should be on the front page of the music section). Lots of variety, some very nice songs by very good artists available.

The Christian rock song made me smile. It's so Christian rock...You know, achingly earnest. I remember such music from weekly chapel services in school. XD;

Speaking of music that makes me smile, I am amused by The Calling's version of Carol of the Bells. It's so alternative rock. Download here.

Been listening to "Walking on Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox a lot lately. The video is fabulous as well, I still get a trip seeing Hugh Laurie in that get-up (I only know him from House). XD; The "No More 'I Love You's'" video, on the other hand, is freaky. She has a bug-eyed look throughout that makes her look NUTS. Great song, though...I think I bought the single on tape way back when...

I've been staring at the gorgeous skin of the vocal of a new band named flumpool. I happened to catch them performing in a music program and...seriously, the dude's skin just makes me want to reach out and lick stroke it. He also has very delicate features--my mom thought he was bishounen-like. The song I heard, Hana ni nare, is very nice and hits my J-pop sweet spot perfectly. XD He has a very smooth voice. Check out the PV and marvel at his skin. I also found a really crappy version of the live performance I happened to catch here.

I also heard Kobukuro sing a song called Akai ito. At first I felt it was too sappy, but it grew on me after a while thanks to Kokukuro's very simple harmonies. Check it out here. I think it'd be a boring song to sing in karaoke because the end gets really repetitive, but I like listening to them very much.

1. Holy crap does Hinakick Web have lovely lovely fanart. Mostly Tom Riddle/Harry (Tom looks so gorgeous, especially with his red eyes), but also many fandoms (mostly unfamiliar). The ones I do recognize are FF7 and FF12 (there's a particularly lovely pic of that kid...Larsa? against a wall). There are some lovely yuri pics with women dressed up very elaborately (and/or partially naked).

2. Tantalize by [livejournal.com profile] kishmet, AtoRyo, AU, over-the-top sizzling sexual temptation and frustration.

3. Overheard in the elevator today:

Woman: I'm tired
Man: Why?
Woman: I'm pregnant
Man: (snickers) ...Seriously?
Woman: Yeah
Man: (pauses) Wow, that's the best excuse I've heard today.

Way to go with the understatement, dude.

4. Anyone have good covers to share? I've been obsessed with them this past weekend and would love some more. Some I shared before:

Closer by Maroon 5
Smells Like Teen Spirit by Tori Amos
Ray of Light by Natasha Beddington
Wonderwall by Ryan Adams

A Resolution of Territory is a wonderful [livejournal.com profile] blind_go fic that made me laugh so hard and so hysterically my sanity was questioned. XDXD

I love a fic that make me completely ignore any issues I may have with characterization or whatever and just relish every moment of it.

I dug through two of my Hikago doujinshi boxes looking for a good pic to scan...I got lazy and settled for the above. I swear I've scanned this before? In any case, I found a second copy of a doujinshi I had scanned and translated a while back, Kai (parts 1, 2, and 3). Anyone want to buy it off me?

Last but not least, a happy song to end a happy post: Distance (M-Flo Remix) by Utada Hikaru. This is a fabulous remix of a great song, especially the beginning. ♥

Rainy Days Never Stays by The Brilliant Green

「Raining all day」 going away
Can't wait to go and spread my wings
Blowing a kiss to me, hello amazing day!
「Raining all day」 has gone away
Sunshine of mine, just be with me
keeping my heart warm as today
Rainy days never stays

Candy in the Sun by Swirl 360

Cos I know a place where the sun is always shining
And I won't forget the face
The one that's gonna keep me smiling
You're like candy in the sun
You're my angel on the run
You're like candy in the sun
Hey Hey Hey

I was flipping through a novel I randomly picked up the other day when I was struck by how much I like the color insert (see left, click for bigger pic). I love how it's off-center and cut off. I never thought of writing about this particular novel because...it's irritating. I don't even particularly like the novel because of my personal problems with it, but despite everything I am oddly compelled to go back and skim through it every so often.

Sentimental Sexualis (I can't believe how silly the title is) is by Sunahara Touko and illustrated by Yamada Sakurako. I bought it when I first fell in love with Sunahara Touko (I've summarized two of her books already, here and here). This is definitely one that made me realize I wasn't going to like every book she writes. ^^;

Aihara Harumi is a third-rate model with almost no redeeming qualities (at least, in my opinion he doesn't...). He's been living with his boyfriend Manabe Sousuke whom he doesn't think of as his boyfriend for a number of years. Sousuke had been a student at Harumi's father's dojo and they had attended the same high school. At the end of high school Sousuke had confessed to Harumi, showing him his savings account balance and telling him he'll make him happy. Harumi, for a reason that escapes him for most of the book, says yes. But he despises gays and treats Sousuke like a servant even as they engage in what can only be described as gay sex (no penetration, though). Harumi is vain, not very bright, selfish, and silly. Sousuke is quiet and patient and very smart (he's in graduate school studying either engineering or science, I can't remember right now). Things start to change, their relationship falls apart, Harumi (and we the readers) realize (learn about) some very important things. It...all makes sense. Harumi's really annoying behavior of pushing Sousuke away (regularly cheating on him) even as he demands Sousuke to indulge his every whim, his inability to accept the reality of their relationship. Most of it is due to Harumi's personality, but some of it is due to external factors. I guess the hardest part to understand is Sousuke's attachment to Harumi (because Harumi is pretty worthless), but his affection (and frustration) feels genuine enough that I can (reluctantly) chalk it up to the "love is blind/crazy/totally illogical" concept.

What else makes me view this book in a positive light is that the sex isn't typical BL stuff. Harumi comes very fast and many times, and is very conscious of it. But because he can't accept that he doesn't measure up to what makes a man good in bed, he makes excuses. He decides that he's normal and that Sousuke is just incredibly slow. They don't have anal sex for years and years and it's kind of an issue but not. The sex is kind of dirty (not a good dirty) and not really erotic, unlike too many BL sex scenes where the sex is elevated way too high. It helps that the art is very nice and very appropriate.

Yamada Sakurako does men very well. The older the men the better they look. She has lots of lovely illustrations on her blog. I love the cover illustration she did for Suite Room ni ai no mitsu (bigger pic here on her blog), which is about the "gorgeous love" of a hotel doorman and the owner of a rival hotel. Unfortunately I really don't like the author, otherwise I'd have so bought the book. Yeah, I'm shallow. I can buy a book almost solely on the cover. He's wearing a partially undone uniform! If only it was written by almost any other author (I only have three authors I refuse to ever buy books from)...

I picked out Kuchiduke wa arashi no yokan by Kuibara Harumo and illustrated by Asato Eiri to stick in this post because the art is pretty and because I thought Asato Eiri did a very nice job drawing an older man (and I was writing about how Yamada Sakurako does older men well). All she did was draw some lines on the face to give an impression of age, but it worked! This is linked to two books Kuibara-sensei had written previously. In one of them the uke in this book is sort of the bad guy who interferes with his younger brother's gay romance. I didn't realize until I got to the afterward that this book was a linked book. I should've realized it when the uke's brother was gay and he and his lover played a decently prominent (if minor) role. In any case, the uke is an uptight doctor. He meets up with a random guy much older than him while sopping drunk and sleeps with him. He's horrified the next morning and decides to forget about the whole incident. Unfortunately, seme isn't going to let him off so easily. He sets up an omiai with his younger sister to lure the uke out and proceeds to seduce him. He carefully but relentlessly pursues the uke, never forcing him but not letting up either. Uke resists him fiercely but never manages to succeed.

This isn't a very original book, but it's a rather pleasant read. I personally really like an uptight uke whose initial resistance is slowly, patiently worn down by a loving seme. The seme's maturity and life experience totally makes him so attractive. I love that he'd loved his wife dearly and that he'd lost her to illness. I love when we see a bit of weakness and insecurity in him as well. I love that he can admit his weakness and insecurity. And above all I love his bit of "meanness" towards the uke at the end (which, of course, is totally not). Okay, I admit it. I really like the seme. I don't dislike the uke, it's just that the seme is really great. ^^;

The beautiful music I was listening to while typing this post up:

Woke up late and felt kind of funky. I made the mistake of taking a nap yesterday (I couldn't help it, I had a massive headache which meant laying in the dark without sound!) so couldn't sleep till late last night, which threw off my sleep schedule. Lazed about contemplating my hungry stomach and wondering if I'd ever get enough energy to actually get up and eat something...After a couple of hours I decided I needed a decent breakfast to start off my lazy Sunday morning.

I was initially going to eat slices of sopressata and provolone, but decided they weren't substantial enough (unless I ate the entire package of both) so I went with chicken and apple sausages and eggs instead. I threw butter into a pan and dumped in two beaten eggs...and found to my consternation that the eggs completely filled the pan up. How was I going to make the sausages as well? Yes, I could heat up another pan but that would mean I'd have another pan to wash! So I folded up the eggs to make room and put the sliced up sausages next to it. The pan looked cramped, but each slice was able to lay flat so I figured it was good enough. After several minutes I put the sausages and eggs on a plate and dug in. Yum! I've eaten the sausages grilled at a BBQ before, the pan-fried isn't as good it certainly isn't shabby. I love the slight sweetness of the sausages. The packaging suggested throwing the sausages in eggs with smoked Gouda and green onions--lovely idea, too bad I have neither smoked Gouda or green onions. The eggs didn't have enough flavor (I only threw in a small amount of salt and pepper in the beginning and hadn't bothered to do anything else), but I like eggs so I didn't mind. Maybe I should've put some of the provolone in? It wouldn't have added much in terms of flavor, but the textural variety might've been nice. *shrugs* Oh well, it's all happily stewing in my stomach now. With some Earl Grey (I need to buy good English Breakfast or something...I love Earl Grey but sometimes I need something more brisk) and orange juice and a fig (from our tree!), it was a lovely (if unhealthy and unbalanced) breakfast. XD

I wish bacon kept better, because I adore the stuff but just can't eat an entire package before it goes bad. How about they sell half packages of bacon for people who don't have large families and/or eat a scary amount in one sitting? I'd stick half the package in the freezer, but bacon doesn't last all that long in there either and I know I'd forget. In any case, the freezer is a scary black hole full of unlabeled lumps of plastic and aluminum foil.

I ought to just throw everything away in the freezer that can't be clearly and immediately identified. I hate being attacked by falling frozen lumps every time I open the freezer anyway.

Last but not least, a nice mid-tempo very j-pop-y j-pop song: Plumeria by melody

I just realized my last post was full of serious, non-fannish content. Completely unacceptable--I can't start off a three-day weekend without fangirling!

New Temeraire book comes out in July! Unfortunately, it's going to be in hardcover. I suppose I can always read it at the bookstore to tide me over until I can get my own paperback copy...

Random music:

Video Killed the Radio Star by Momoi Haruko is an inane but oddly addictive cover of the 80s hit (which I never did like). I love how I can't quite understand her English.

Stay Gold by Utada Hikaru is another very nice song by her. The last song by her I instantly liked as much was Beautiful World, though that was tainted by its association with Eva.

Out of curiosity, what free file hosting service do most people like? I personally like Badongo, Mediafire, and Megaupload because they give me the best download speeds.

Hm, do I have anything else fannish to talk about? Not really...Read some decent BL novels that I'd eventually like to talk about but I haven't had the chance to write up anything about them because I've been making a determined effort to go to sleep early so that I'm not totally messed up at work. I must be getting old since sleep >>>>> fangirling. *sighs and remembers the days of staying up till 3 AM translating fanfics*

Thanks for everyone that pointed out that a new Viewfinder came out not that long ago. :P I haven't been on top of things in December, frankly, and I was just too lazy to go check the comm before posting my little complaint. I did like the new VF. Action! Talking! Kissing! I won't go as far as to say that things are resolved between the two of them, but it felt like Fei Long can finally move on. I just hope that fugly Russian dude isn't doing something kinky to Akihito in the meantime...*gags* The newest Crimson Spell was...not very interesting. I want the fighting to end already. I want Havri in his right mind! I hate most kinds of powering up--too much shonen manga. *sighs*

I'm in a mood for fanfic right now, but I'm faaar too lazy to go looking for good ones. I hate having to slog through the masses of crap to find the few really good ones...Maybe I'll go reread my boxes of doujinshi. I haven't touched them in ages...Been too busy reading BL novels.

In the meantime, check out this languid feeling song that totally matches my current mood: Come On, Come Out by A Fine Frenzy...As well as a wonderful acoustic live cover version of Don't Dream It's Over by Neil Finn (love the original, love this cover). I think I need to not listen to music while typing up posts. Makes me want to share...

It just hit me--It's Friday! Yay! There's something nice about forgetting something obvious, because you get to feel the rush of joy upon realizing it. XD

I wanted to share some songs I like, but thought that just throwing out links would be boring so I'm providing some "context" for the songs. Though these songs obviously apply to all relationships, I'm stained with BL mania so it's the most natural way for me to describe the songs. XDXD

No Sleep Tonight by The Faders
Alpha-bastard seme rapist declaring his intent in an upbeat song. Seriously, check out the lyrics.

I got you, i got you on my mind

And it's time to make you see (what i want)
So I'll just make this a little more obvious

Cause I get what I want, and I want you to get with me!

Don't think you know,

How far I'm gonna do

You Oughta Know by The Killing Moon
Bitter angsty anthem of the spurned woman by Alannis Morissette covered so well by a guy...Thus making me think of the uke whose been dumped by his lover so that the lover can marry a woman.

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, till you died
But you're still alive

Complicated by Carolyn Dawn Johnson
Entire manga/books have been all about the guy who finds that he's in love with a friend and agonizes over it, sometimes in a touching, affecting way and sometimes in an irritating "just get over it or confess already!" way.

I'm so scared that the way that I feel
Is written all over my face
When you walk into the room
I wanna find a hiding place
We used to laugh, we used to hug,
The way that all friends do
But now a smile and a touch of your hand
Just makes me come unglued,

Such a contridiction,
Do I lie or tell the truth,
Is it fact or fiction,
Oh the way I feel for you

Last Night on Earth by Delta Goodrem
Typical angsty declaration of love, always useful when the lovers think they might be separated for whatever reason.

If tomorrow never comes I want you to know right now that I
I'm gonna love you until the day I die
If tomorrow falls asleep can you hold me first
I'm gonna love you like it's the last night on earth

Guess It May by Rosie Thomas
Song for the character who has love and happiness but is horribly insecure and resigned to the fact that things might not work out. Of course something (or things) happen, often completely trivial (or a complete misunderstanding), that tip the insecurity into full-blown anxiety and angst.

I’m still learning what love is
When I’m walking close to you
The best way to hold your hand in mine
The best way to comfort you

Guess it may
Guess it may
Guess it may
Guess it may
It may always be this way

I was debating whether to cancel a subscription I have at the local Japanese bookstore, a debate I have every month when I go to pick it up. Upon arriving to pick up this month's issue I was delighted to find out that the decision was out of my hands--this was the last issue of the magazine! When asked if I wanted to switch my subscription to another magazine I firmly shook my head and happily said no. I'm free!!

I've been on a search for pretty solo piano pieces from the various soundtracks on my computer---it's been tough finding a nice variety. Too many composers like to use the solo piano to convey sadness or loneliness or nostalgia. Come on people, the piano is so much more versatile than that. :P

We have a new single serve coffee maker at work that not only can do coffee, but tea and hot cocoa as well. It uses little sealed cups of coffee/tea/hot cocoa and a reservoir of water to instantly make a cup (of different sizes). I haven't used it for myself yet (though I made a cup for someone else and was quite amazed at how easy it was), but I discovered that you can use the machine to brew your own coffee by using a reusable coffee filter. I just got some coffee as a gift--I'm tempted to haul my grinder and coffee beans to work to try it out (I have a french press at home but never am in the mood for coffee early in the morning).

Oh, and I have to add--Harney & Sons Hot Cinammon Spice Tea is simply lovely, especially after a big meal. Assertive and fragrant, yet so soothing...

Yeah, I'm addicted...I'm in love.

Song I'm completely addicted to right now? Una Poesia Anche Per Te by Elisa. Check out a very nice live performance on youtube here. Download song here.

I couldn't find a translation of the lyrics, unfortunately. :P

MY GOD. Some people should never own or be allowed nearby karaoke machines. Or at least only allow them near those that are on MUTE. One of my neighbors is probably having a party, and two people (I think) are wailing in the worst way right now. According to my mom they've been going since morning...And it's 7:30 PM now...I am so glad we aren't right next door to them, because I think murderous rage can be caused by awfulness such as that.

Recall by [livejournal.com profile] kishmet is a lovely TezuRyo fic that...And I am having a hard time coming up with something to say besides that it's lovely. Really, it is. And I love obsessions over wrists. Aren't wrists so sensual?

I was recently cleaning out my hard drive when I came across a mysterious fanmix I had downloaded a while back. It was for a slash pairing between people named Nathan and Peter, but there was no label for what show it was (it was obviously a TV show or maybe a movie because there were pics of two guys on the fanmix covers). I did a search for "Nathan/Peter" and "fanfic" and quickly came up with Heroes. A that point it all came back to me. I had actually seen the season finale of the show by accident with a friend explaining the back stories of each of the characters that showed up on the screen. So I had seen Nathan and Peter before, but they just left so little an impression on me visually I didn't make an instant connection (that Indian doctor dude, on the other hand? I'd recognize him. He's HOT.). I finally stuck the fanmix onto my ipod and was delighted to find out that it kicks lots of ass. Great music. XDXD

Two of the several songs that I've had on repeat recently:

Criminal by Alexz Johnson
Say It Right by Nelly Furtado

In any case, I randomly picked one of the fanfics that had shown up in my initial search to read...and it turned out to be pretty damn cool. wherever you go, the earth just opens up by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis is a double amnesia fic. It's very prettily written, and it's fascinating seeing two people with no pasts making things up as they go along.

The author had rec'd a fic in the same post. Since I had enjoyed her fic so much I decided to check her rec out, especially since she said it has one of those annoying fannish cliches in it but actually worked...and boy was it cute! It's called I'm no angel, but i've spread my wings a bit by [livejournal.com profile] kelly_girl and [livejournal.com profile] skripka...and I think it's pretty easy to figure out what the story is about from the title (yes, I am not joking). But...it's cute! It's sweet! It's not retarded!

In any case, I killed any insane urge to go poking around another fandom of a show I've not really watched and didn't look for any more.

You know, I wonder if I don't recognize any of the songs being "sung" because I don't know them or because they're being butchered into unrecognizability...

Been in a state of happiness discovering and reading some Highlander fanfics (nothing like revisiting old fandoms...), then somehow or another ended up reading astolat's Master & Commander fics. I know absolutely nothing about the books and have not watched the movie, but I'm rather keen to read the books now. The two that made me cackle the most? AUs. Shiny shiny (fairly long) AUs:

Duende
Bonding! Sword-masters! Rings! Love love love it, great use of fantasy/fannish tropes wrapped in the tasty language of that period.

Five Things That Never Happened To Aubrey & Maturin
Five: The World Turned Upside Down

Genderfuck! (Sort of) Mpreg! There is no bad here.

It amused me to realize sometime while I was reading that the drama CD of Flesh & Blood was playing in the background, in particular one of the sword-fighting sequences. I would love to watch an anime with really good sword-fighting now....

In keeping with my happy mood, some shiny music:

Come To Me (Mellatron Remix) by Clazziquai

Bouncing Off Clouds by Tori Amos

BREEZE by Genki Rockets
insaneneko: (Default)
...Saying that, my post has nothing to do with the holiday. Hope everyone in the U.S. is enjoying the odd mid-week day off!!

First some fandom stuff:

Moment by [livejournal.com profile] kishmet is a wonderful TezuRyo AU in which Tezuka is a photographer and Ryoma is a model. Ryoma's attitude is in full force here, with Tezuka the resolute guiding force. They clash and slide sideways and end up all jumbled together.

The God of Go Singles Ad by [livejournal.com profile] flonnebonne and [livejournal.com profile] bookshop is retarded. Shiny, yes, but totally retarded. And cracked.

Then some BL:

Mada ai ni todokanai by Hizaki Yuu and illustrated by Asou Kai is about salarymen Naganuma and Chiya. Naganuma had mentored Chiya from when Naganuma had been a part-time worker in college, and had thought of him as a cute, big puppy. But when Naganuma sees Chiya in a suit, looking all grown up and hot, he is struck by Cupid's arrow. But after much thought he decides that a) they are both guys and b) Chiya is the son of a company president, so there was no future for them even if he said something and Chiya didn't reject him. He will treat Chiya the same as he always had...or try to. Unfortunately, this is a BL novel so things can't be so boring simple. One drunken night one thing leads to another and they kind of fall into a physical relationship. While Chiya insists that he's in love with Naganuma, Naganuma takes the attitude that he'll go along with Chiya to mutually get each other off in the absence of girlfriends. Of course this causes much internal angst, but Naganuma amazingly manages to stick to his story pretty much all the way through. I was pretty impressed at how manly Naganuma was despite the usual torment of unrequited love that makes almost all uke weepy/snivelling and annoying. The story is very straightfoward and very predictable, but because Naganuma and Chiya weren't stupid and weren't forced to act in some grand tragedy by the author I enjoyed reading this. It also didn't hurt that I happen to like the illustrator a lot:

Two pretty pics )

Another nice aspect is that their physical relationship didn't include anal sex, which seems to be de rigueur in BL. Unfortunately the novel did fall into the typical anal sex = consummation of love convention at the end, but...I didn't say this novel was particularly original, did I? :P

And last but not least, some music. I've been listening to some great stuff lately:

bleu sky by moumoon
This group is produced by Nagao Dai of DAI (Do As Infinity), and in a way the sound reminds me of DAI. Possibly a cross between DAI and YUI? It is...breezy and slightly folksy and terribly addictive. I have got to find more of their music...Check out the music video of their single "Flower" on youtube.

Kiss Goodbye by Wang Lee Hom
Lovely Chinese ballad. As the title suggests, it sounds like a sad song. According to this translation the lyrics are exactly what one would expect. It's just a pretty, pretty pop ballad.

Moi...Lolita by Alizée
She's apparently a successful French singer, the protege of Mylène Farmer? This is the big hit from her first album. Fabulously addictive if too...consciously sexy? ^^;

Invisible Ink by Aimee Mann
The way she sings in this song reminds me of Vienna Teng a little bit. It's a lovely, simple, folksy song. (I didn't make the connection immediately, but I have a fabulous live cover version of Coldplay's "The Scientist" by her. Damn, she kicks ass!)

Hm, looks like I've gone for four different languages and styles. I'd share more but I'm sick of uploading. :P

I love how the simplest things can brighten up a crappy week day in an instant. I was listening to a radio program when they profiled one half of a very successful song-writing team in connection with a CD compilation of their music, when they spoke about how that guy, Doc Pomus, would sometimes take the most personal of topics and create a universal hit. His wife loved to dance, but he couldn't as he had been crippled by polio. He still took her to dance halls and watched her as she danced with other men. But when the last dance was called he'd get up and stumble around the floor with her...And thus was born "Save The Last Dance For Me." I have always loved the original hit by The Drifters as well as Michael Buble's cover. I happen to have both songs:

Save The Last Dance For Me by The Drifters

Save The Last Dance For Me by Michael Buble

You can dance-every dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye,let him hold you tight
You can smile-every smile for the man
Who held your hand neath the pale moon light
But don't forget who's takin' you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin' save the last dance for me

I decided a while back that I'd do a mini-festival of sorts, celebrating the childhood friend (osananajimi) in BL. I thought of the idea because several stories I liked enough to start writing posts happened to be about childhood friends who become romantically involved. It stuck with me because the whole concept appeals to me immensely. I love the portrayal of childhood friendship as something intrinsic to the friends--like breathing, they've always been there and together. While I enjoy seeing completely platonic relationships as well, I do particularly love seeing how such an established and comfortable relationship changes thanks to new (or if not new, newly exposed and acknowledged) feelings. I was going to wait until I wrote up most of the reviews I planned for this mini-festival (I put together the small list by going around my house looking for books I liked featuring childhood friends, so it's extremely haphazard. ^^;), but I got sick of all the angsty stuff I kept posting about recently (which, btw, is because it's easier and faster for me to write up a post on stories that bug me but didn't make me love them--it's a form of catharsis so that I can get over the stories and move on. Stories I actually like take longer because I refer to the novels a lot--usually rereading them several times in the process--and write too much and in too much detail so that I have to edit and proof a lot before those posts are presentable. XD).

I thought long and hard for manga/BL novels (that I wasn't going to summarize) featuring childhood friendship that I could mention in this intro post, but came up pretty blank. I'm not sure why, since I'm pretty sure it's a popular topic! I vaguely remember having read a bunch of BL manga about childhood friends, though I probably don't remember most of them because they didn't impress me. One I did like and had pimped previously is Soba ni oitene by Sakuragi Yaya. XD In non-BL, I love Adachi Mitsuru's manga Touch and H2. Any recs for good books/manga/anime/BL novels that feature childhood friends?

Some songs to get into the right mood (though the songs all kick-ass on their own merits):

Jet Pack by Eve 6

The lyrics! They are perfect!

1/3 no junjou na kanjou by Siam Shade

This song is about pure devotion, which is often a theme of childhood friendship turned romance. In particular, this song is about unrequited love (also a popular theme in BL). The singer wonders if his pure devotion will ever reach the object of his affection? In BL it almost always does (unless the character in love is the designated third-wheel or some minor character, of course). Lyrics here. Oh man, I haven't heard this song in ages. Brings back fond memories of Rurouni Kenshin!

ureshii! tanoshii! daisuki! by dreams come true

This song is...happy. It's not so much about childhood friends as a simple celebration of being in love. I couldn't find a translation and don't feel like doing one, but see here for the Japanese lyrics. The title is approximately "I'm happy! It's fun! I love you!" and I think the feeling comes across even without understanding the lyrics. It's for that overwhelming, jump up and down, "OMG I'm in love!" moment. XD

Hallelujah by Angela Aki

I was massively obsessed with this song for a while, and as I was listening to it while working on summaries for the mini-festival it hit me one day. The chorus is like that (usually cheesy) moment of connectedness BL novels have in the first sex scene (when it's one of those novels where the sex scene is truly the culmination of the establishment of the relationship). Check out the lyrics (need to scroll down about halfway). I find the bridge particularly appropriate:

When I lay with you,
It’s like a flame, a hot breath,
like a light turned on, like it’s carved inside
Feel it in yourself, feel it in yourself

Frankly, I didn't spend too much time looking for songs. Any suggestions for good songs on the subject or songs perfect for stereotypical BL themes/moments/scenes?

In any case, stay tuned for a bunch of summaries! They'll probably dribble out as I finish them...Maybe with this post I'll be more motivated to finish this project quickly. :P

Been on a covers kick recently, so I thought I'd share some of them. The list ended up decently long (well, longer than expected) so they are under a cut: the covers and a remix )

And for more music, I uploaded all the Camino songs I have:

Vanish
Lives
Rasen
Go Mad Emotion

My favorite of the bunch is probably "Lives," which is rather upbeat. "Vanish" reminds me the most of the Koutetsu Sangokushi opening, though none of their older songs sound as polished or as smooth as that one. Arg, I need to find more of their music...Or find their album to buy. *sighs*

Via [livejournal.com profile] sesame_seed, a scarily addictive Kira paper doll dress up flash thing created by [livejournal.com profile] baby_pen. So many choices! Combinations! Abominations!

Via [livejournal.com profile] ariss_tenoh, cute kitten video, though I think only the first 50 sec are cute, the rest...not so much.

Life sometimes really sucks. So, music:

On the Radio by Regina Spektor

I know the song from the most excellent "This Is How It Works" by lim, vid for the SGA fic (aka fandom phenomenon) "Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose" by Synecdochic. (Haven't seen the vid? Watch it here!) I love the quirky feel to the song, the live version is just a little different.

That's Why I Hate Pontiacs by Rebecca Lynn Howard

Very, very country-sounding song with very, very country lyrics. Why does the singer hate Pontiacs? Because her man left her, that's why! But it's slowly grown on me (like fungus)...Now I sing along to it, loudly, while driving.

Fan Bu Wan de Xia Tian (我想要說--I want to say) by Evan Yo

According to his wiki entry, Evan Yo is a 20-year old Taiwanese singer majoring in violin at university. It's a very laid back, catchy song. I recognize only the "I love you" part, so I guess he wants to say "I love you?" ^^; In any case, his picture makes him look extremely young. I thought he was, like, 15 or something.

Any good music to share?
