DO NOT BUY THIS TEA. I ran out of Earl Grey at work and decided to pick up something during my weekly grocery shopping. OMG this thing sucks. Not only is the bergamot weak, there is this nasty bitter smokey burnt flavor that makes me want to chuck the entire can. >_<

I put in some random CDs and rediscovered good music, like Ningyou by Amano Tsukiko. ♥♥

Accidentally discovered cracktastic Engrish at a site selling bottled Hawaii Water (TM?) in Japan. It's so awful it's kinda awesome. My favorite is how they spell Oahu, as in the island, as "Owafu." Did they just machine translate everything? The testimonials are pretty fun to read, too.

[livejournal.com profile] seperis asks for tea recs and gets A LOT. Oh man, now I want to order tea! Check out both LJ and DW. I can't wait for the shincha to start arriving in my local tea store...

Via The Splendid Table: There are a couple of guys in NYC with a truck farm, as in vegetables grown in the back of a pickup truck. They even have a CSA. For $20/year you can get miniscule amounts of veggies delivered right to you by the farm itself. The concept is so cool, but how do you make sure people don't steal the food?

It's sad how much I post about food and not about books lately. It's not like I'm not reading any books. It's just that I'm either reading non-fiction books, which I almost never post about, or crappy books that aren't worth posting about (like, not so awfully bad it requires a post talking about how bad it is). I want to read an awesome book that makes me do a post with lots of exclamation marks...*sighs*

I want to eat Meyer Lemon Souffle in a charming Tiffany blue cup! I do love lemon souffles and the presentation is lovely.

Some amazing photos of five cliff top towns. Been to one, Santorini, which really was nice (if mega-touristy). Would love to see the others as well...

I've picked up a couple of new podcasts. One of them is on travel, and listening to it makes me want to jump in a plane right now. Just heard guides to Paris and Rome, an amusing one on Scotland and Wales (apparently Cardiff is an ugly town?), and a more general one on food. I priced a plane ticket on a travel site, it'd cost about $1400 to fly over in October (picked a random non-summer month). *sighs* Compared to $600 and eight hours to Japan, Europe is too distant and expensive. No wonder I keep choosing to go to Japan all the time instead of exploring new places. :P

I was wandering around the world of tea blogs and tried a different method for making iced tea using only ice and tea leaves from here. I didn't find it particularly amazing, but maybe the problem was that I used crappy leaves?

I am currently addicted to oolong tea. For years I hated the taste, but recently I've grown to love it. I love it cold and hot, and I really need to find a good (and not too expensive) source of leaves to make my own. I've been buying big bottles on sale since the bottled stuff tastes good, but I know it's insanely expensive when compared to making my own.

I want this. Too bad it seems to be available only in the UK.

July 2008 releases of manga in English that excite me:

Kiss Blue Vol. 1   by Keiko Kinoshita from DMP/June
SILVER DIAMOND Vol. 1 by Shiho Sugiura from Tokyo Pop
Vassalord Vol. 1 by Nanae Chrono from Tokyo Pop

Hope SD's translation does it justice. XD

Yet another discussion on loanwords, this one peppered with observations on Chinese and Japanese.

Japan's great energy efficiency numbers ruined by...toilets

Article on Japanese women at Nissan breaking into management that came off rather sexist and condescending. I love how it states: "As Japanese companies try to improve their disgraceful record of promoting women, they are finding that the biggest problem isn't defeating the chauvinism of Japanese men. It is building up the confidence of Japanese women." So...the lack of confidence of Japanese women don't come from the chauvinism of Japanese men? Where does it come from, then? A deep well of under-confidence native to Japanese women?

Huh. Antique Bakery by Yoshinaga Fumi will be an anime this summer (Site is in Japanese).

[livejournal.com profile] serena_daragon posted pics of the newest VF chapter (currently public, she will f-lock post in three days). I had to laugh. )

Ugh. Seeing the decline of the dollar against the Japanese yen graphically is so, SO painful. ;_;

Kind of scary that
Pakistan was responsible for a near-worldwide Youtube blackout. Glad to hear that things got fixed very quickly, though it seems like this is the sort of problem experts have been worried about for a while?

Heard a hilarious story reporter and author Malcolm Gladwell tells about his first job in a newsroom on This American Life (Check out the podcast of it here.). I had to desperately suppress my laughter since I was at work. It made for a fabulous story, but I tried not to think about how ethically wrong it all was.

Chad Vader - Day Shift Manager

Three teas were profiled in the December 2007 issue of body + soul:

1. Tulsi: An herb used in Ayurveda, good for stress and boosting immunity; tastes sweet and fragrant with flavors of mint, licorice, and cloves.
2. Yerba Mate: A coffee substitute that gives a buzz without jitters; tastes earthy, slightly bitter and smoky.
3. Pu-erh: A Chinese tea that aids digestion, made in bricks and develops better flavor with age; tastes clean and flowery.

I'm rather curious about these teas. Has anyone tried these?

How to Tell if a Recipe is Worth Cooking With Five Easy Questions from Casual Kitchen and Frugal Food Hacks: 10 Tricks to Simplifying Recipe Searches from Cheap Healthy Food list great things to keep in mind when looking at recipes. I tend to obsessively search for and save recipes (even though I almost never actually make anything), and I do employ a lot of the ideas already to cut down on the crap.

The Perfect Hobby: One That’s Cheap, Makes Money Or Becomes A Business
I wish my hobbies were cheap or made money. Ha, instead I spend scary amounts of money on buying and paying for (rather expensive) shipping of books from a foreign country and scary amounts of time reading and writing about them.

On a sort of related note, I really hate how almost every "how to save money" list includes borrowing books from the library instead of buying. Let me know when libraries start stocking Japanese (BL) novels and manga, then maybe I'll think about it. And I realize my reading habits are not the norm (I reread a lot), but I'd think there are quite a number of people who reread their books more than never once. I even reread books I didn't like the first time, partly to give it another chance and partly because I figure I can put the book down if I need to do something else. XD;

On the Media's "Novel" Challenge for NaNoWriMo has garnered quite a response. People are pretty creative in their 12-word "novels." :P

And this is where I'd say goodnight, put my laptop to sleep and go to bed, but I'm wide awake and antsy. I shouldn't have taken that nap in early evening... *sighs*

I was debating whether to cancel a subscription I have at the local Japanese bookstore, a debate I have every month when I go to pick it up. Upon arriving to pick up this month's issue I was delighted to find out that the decision was out of my hands--this was the last issue of the magazine! When asked if I wanted to switch my subscription to another magazine I firmly shook my head and happily said no. I'm free!!

I've been on a search for pretty solo piano pieces from the various soundtracks on my computer---it's been tough finding a nice variety. Too many composers like to use the solo piano to convey sadness or loneliness or nostalgia. Come on people, the piano is so much more versatile than that. :P

We have a new single serve coffee maker at work that not only can do coffee, but tea and hot cocoa as well. It uses little sealed cups of coffee/tea/hot cocoa and a reservoir of water to instantly make a cup (of different sizes). I haven't used it for myself yet (though I made a cup for someone else and was quite amazed at how easy it was), but I discovered that you can use the machine to brew your own coffee by using a reusable coffee filter. I just got some coffee as a gift--I'm tempted to haul my grinder and coffee beans to work to try it out (I have a french press at home but never am in the mood for coffee early in the morning).

Oh, and I have to add--Harney & Sons Hot Cinammon Spice Tea is simply lovely, especially after a big meal. Assertive and fragrant, yet so soothing...

Yeah, I'm addicted...I'm in love.

White Porcelain & Hot Tea
by Jalaine Faunce Studio (@ jelainefaunce.blogspot.com)

I love that painting so much; I dearly wish I stumbled across that blog before the auction was over. :P For those interested in such art, Paris Breakfasts (@ parisbreakfasts.blogspot.com) also paints lots of teacups.

It's summer, I felt trapped in the air conditioned office building gazing outside at the blue, blue sky and the blue, blue ocean...So I started poking around for refreshing summer drinks. As I am a tea freak, I was drawn to the ice tea recipes:

From loveSicily: Ice tea with lemon granita

From Our Home to Yours: Creamy Brazilian Limeade (no, it's not tea but it sounds so *good*)

From about.com: Top 7 Top Varieties of Earl Grey Tea

From the Food Network: Summertime Litchi Iced Tea

From everlasting:

I quite like iced tea and my mom has developed the easiest way of preparing it.

She dips (for sometime)and strains Darjeeling tea leaves and allows it to refrigerate. while serving she adds fresh lime juice, caster sugar, fresh mint leaves, ice cubes. and that's it, a big, refreshing glass of iced tea is prepared in a jiffy.

I also couldn't help myself, I had gone to the bookstore for another reason today but in the end I bought The New Tea Book by Sara Perry. It's so pretty! I hope it's informative and interesting. XD

The New York Times article Iced Coffee? No Sweat made me really want to try cold-brewed iced coffee. As I didn't want to bother registering to see the recipe, I found it in this blog post. I never did like the bitterness of hot coffee that's been iced...

As for iced tea, I can't make it to save my life--I can never get the ratio of tea to sugar right, usually oversweetening it, to my utter dismay). I also dislike most regular iced tea. What I do like? Plantation iced tea, which is basically 2 parts iced tea with one part pineapple juice (according to this blog post). Oh my god how refreshing and not cloyingly sweet it is! I usually get it in restaurants though, as I fail at making iced tea. ^^; (As an aside, an amusing if old BBC article on making the perfect cup of tea.)

Last but not least, how to make ice cream without an ice cream maker. Sounds so easy and so good!

And because I've yet to make poll since becoming a paid member...

A new L'Occitane store opened nearby, but it was only when I walked past it that I decided to check it out. They had an assortment of bar soaps, and being the bar soap whore that I am I could not help but buy one to try. I am currently using the soap with olive oil and am loving it. Wonderful subtle olive oil smell, and it feels so soft and moisturizing without being too much. There is residue, just a slight fresh scent. And it's a HUGE bar that will last for quite a while.

A product I hope will come back this Christmas: Lush's Eggnog lip balm. I am not actually fond of lip products that smell like food, but I got this product for free and have been using it at night. Wow, I am in LOVE with this scent as it's not too strong or too sweet. The lip balm is also very good, so I hope it is a regular seasonal product.

I fell in love with the aroma of Harney & Sons Paris Blend black tea and bought a tin a while back. I finally got around to drinking it, and at first wasn't too impressed at the actual taste of it. I persisted, and am very much in love with the flavor as much as the scent. I love either that or Hot Cinnamon Spice as a pick me up in the afternoon.

One thing that irritates me to no end is when a product is either impossible or rather expensive to acquire. Some friends went to Europe and brought back a sampler of Fortnum & Mason teas. I tried the Earl Grey Classic and was initially wowed by the one cup. I wanted to get some for myself and see if it stood up to daily consumption. It seems they only sell in the US via their website, and while the teas aren't priced ridiculously the shipping seems rather insane. I'm still debating whether or not to shell out the money for a tea that I think I may really like but am not really sure about. -_-
