Finished the first DVD box of Avatar (up to episode 20). For the most part enjoyed it quite a bit. Definitely liked the main characters more. Sometimes things were a bit too pat, but as I liked how good the kids were I didn't get too annoyed. more )

I stumbled on a post asking for young adult books for a 13 year old reader interested in reading romance at Smart Bitches Trashy Books, which resulted in a torrent of recs. I smiled at the ones I recognized and loved, and saw a bunch I hope to check out. Another post reviewed/rec'd a book in English set in Edo Japan called The Tokaido Road by Lucia St. Clair Robson. I'm tempted to read it even though I avoid books in English set in the past in Japan. In contrast, I laughed reading a hilarious skewering of a rather awful romance book. It reminds me a bit of the kind of thing I write when I've read some god-awful BL novel...

Fanfics:

Explicit by Resonant, Sherlock, S/J, John is clueless and aggravating. Of course Sherlock can't help it. XD;

Harry Watson Investigates by [livejournal.com profile] orange_crushed, Sherlock, gen AU, sequel to The dangerous book for boys.

Conquered, Fallen, and Deep by [livejournal.com profile] tetsubinatu, Merlin, dark slavefic AU where Merlin is a prince. The first two is vanilla slavefic, but I rather liked the third fic.

I've been having some problems sleeping, so I decided to shut my cat out last night in order to prevent her pouncing on my legs and waking me up completely (and giving me pain). She doesn't bother me while I'm asleep, but when she senses that I'm even sort of awake she attacks my legs. It hurts. And totally wakes me up. But when I heard the scratching at the door I couldn't do it. I got up and let her in, and she meowed and shoved her face in my face and curled up next to me. It's worth the pain and the scars and the inability to go back to sleep, right?

I've been ignoring the upcoming royal wedding in general, but I couldn't help but read an article in today's newspaper because it concerned what Kate Middleton's title will be. I recently looked up the whole Peerage thing thanks to all the GH reading, so the topic interested me. The title will be determined by the Queen. As Prince William doesn't really have a title title yet, it is speculated that he'll probably get a Dukedom or an Earldom so she'll be a Duchess or a Countess. She could end up as "Her Royal Highness Princess William of Wales," which would be rather sucky. It reminded me of how the annoying sister-in-law in Slyvester was Lady Henry Rayne and how odd it sounded. Looking for an article to link to, I came across articles about changing the rules of succession so that it doesn't privilege the male children before the female children (and exclude Catholics). While I don't really care as I'm not a citizen of the country, I hope they bother to do it. Surely they can overcome any lame arguments by asshole sexists. Japan seemed so ass-backwards back when there was talk of changing their stupid law which doesn't allow females to become Empress. (But then I didn't pay too much attention to that either. Once again, not my country. ^^;)

More fanfics:

Just How by Lovelikethemovies, Generation Kill, Brad/Nate, Nate and Brad one fine morning. Sweet and short.

A Matter of National Security, Sherlock, J/S, Mycroft meddles. For everyone's sake.

Lab Book by sam storyteller, Sherlock, S/J, Chrismas Eve, lots of cute moments on the way to the two getting it on. Loved the freaky deduction by John! He's been around Sherlock too much.

Autopsis by [livejournal.com profile] spikeface, Sherlock, S/J, Sherlock is kinda nuts. There is violence and sex. (Not sure I like it, but I want to remember it and so it goes into an LJ post. I just don't bother with bookmarks for some fandoms, posting in LJ is my substitution for bookmarking. ^^;)

Reversal of Fortune by [livejournal.com profile] mad_poetics, Merlin, Merlin/Arthur modern AU in which Merlin is the rich boss and Arthur is the assistant. So sweet!

Bunch of pornathon request fics by [livejournal.com profile] mad_poetics, Merlin, mostly Merlin/Arthur, the tentacles one is pretty good but the second challenge that can not be described is too awesome for words.

I saw bits and pieces of Watchmen, the movie adaptation of the seminal eighties comic book about the dark side of superheroes, at a friend's house. I was repelled by it, and I didn't even see the parts with all the gore and sex because my friend knew I wouldn't want to see them!! The end was stupid, too. I just felt gross afterwards, though I couldn't articulate my feelings at the time. Luckily we then saw most of the Merlin episode in which Gwen is mistakenly kidnapped, which helped get the icky taste out of my mouth. It's a silly but entertaining show, but damn are the fanworks so much better written. I'd never actually seen any episode of the show, so I was really surprised at just how overwhelmingly geeky Merlin is. If I hadn't already had a mild attachment to the character via fandom, I actually think I'd have been repulsed. This is very similar to my reaction to Rodney on SGA, actually. ^^; The banter between Arthur and Merlin were quite amusing. The funniest (and most painful) thing was Launcelot, though. OMG that man spouts the most ridiculous noble romantic crap ever! I'd rather just mute the sound when he's around and look at him because he's certainly easy on the eyes. XD;

I had a silly, momentary dilemma at the farmer's market the other day. There are a bunch of flimsy foldable plastic benches set up for people to sit and eat. They are clearly labeled "Do not sit at end" on each, probably because they'd tip over since they are so flimsy if there was no counterbalancing weight. I sat in the middle of an unoccupied bench and enjoyed my beignets with lilikoi (passionfruit) sauce. Just as I was finishing up a woman sat at the very end of the bench I was on. I was paralyzed for a while trying to figure out if I should tell her she needs to scoot in so that I could stand up without fear of making the bench tip over, just stand up and walk off without saying anything, or just sit there being the counterweight. Luckily she got up fairly quickly so I was freed from making a choice. I can't express how relieved I felt and how silly I felt feeling so relieved. ^^;

The Play's the Thing (or, The Lady Doth Protest Too Much, Methinks) by [livejournal.com profile] shinybug, Merlin/Arthur, just plain hilarious. I love this kind of "one person is slightly off-balance and the other is totally not but it's not some awful power thing" fic. XDXD

The Crown of the Summer Court by [livejournal.com profile] astolat is a fabulous Merlin fanfic--the only one that's taken my breath away so far. Many of my favorite authors have begun writing in this fandom, and while they were good stories they did not make my heart soar. Not like this one. Typical [livejournal.com profile] astolat mix of humor, drama, romance, wonder...

I just spent many hours this morning going through the archive reading fics. Luckily I wasn't in much of a mood to read fandoms I don't know and I don't know many of the fandoms in this set, so I skipped A LOT of them. Still, it took a LONG time to get through the list. I seemed to have been in a light and fluffy mood because most of the fics I particularly enjoyed were light and fluffy (though some were leaning towards sappy and others were mostly funny). The ones that moved me to tab them:

A Storybook Story, The Princess Bride, what happens afterwards.

Wearing the Sod Gown, Laputa Castle in the Sky, what happens afterwards.

Souvenir, Crest of the Stars, Jinto gets Lafiel a souvenir.

Four Lessons on the Alcione Order, Elenium Tamuli series by David Eddings, slash I can actually believe in from this series (though not necessarily because I thought the characters were slashable--I don't remember enough from canon to say. It's all the author's skill in making this couple work in this fic).

This I Promise You, Demon Diary, fluff!

In Which Howl Adjusts HIs Crooked Heart, Howl's Moving Castle, title says it all.

The Boy With The Thorn In His Side, Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Cat finds home at the Castle.

Apple Vines, Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Cat finds his place.

Ten Hats and a Gallon, Fake, I love this because of Ryo's extended rant about his completely irrational hatred of Santa hats.

Cartography, A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Ram Dass contemplates London, his life, his master, the little girl in the attic next door.

Evermore, Gankutsuou, it has a lovely lyrical sex scene--no clue if it's even remotely IC. XD;

As Close as Hands and Feet, The Incredibles, big sisters take care of their little brothers.

Junjou Christmas, Junjou Romantica, how the three couples spend Christmas--with one of the worst cliches ever (love the argument the Terrorist couple have in particular).

Lucid Dreaming, Kuroshitsuji, Ciel dreams dark things, of the past and (possibly?) of the future...

The Most Beautiful Woman of His Acquaintance, Anne of Green Gables series, Gilbert at one moment in Anne of the Island.

Invincible Summer, Nightrunner series, a sweet first time.

Wind in the East, Mary Poppins, Bert waits for the wind in the east.

Five Kindnesses Charles Emerson Winchester III Performed (But Would Never Acknowledge), MASH, Charles, ever pompous yet with flashes of secret kindness.

Like Love in the Movies, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Kyon finds himself stuck in a really bad indie romance movie (complete with soundtrack).

Turn the Tables, Merlin, tables are turned more than once.

Worth Every Moment, Temeraire, odd slash pairing but some fun dialogue and lots of awkwardness.

In Dreams, His Dark Materials, short and lovely fic about a very odd couple...
