Nessa no ou to tsumetai tsuki by Shuhdoh Rena and illustrated by Takashina Yuh is another Arabian fantasy BL featuring a half-Caucasian blue-eyed Arabian prince, this time paired with an assassin pretending to be a prostitute in order to kill the prince's father. Instead of the assassin getting in bed with the father so that he can do his killing as planned, he gets routed to the son. They have hot sex. Assassin eventually realizes the prince must know he's not the simple prostitute he's pretending to be, sees the prince's invitation to the prince's country as a challenge and takes him up on it (and to get another chance to kill the father and fulfill his mission--failure is NOT an option!). They get to the prince's country where the assassin is suitably impressed by the decadence of the palaces. They have more hot sex. There's resolution of the entire assassination plot (the upshot is that the prime minister--or someone similarly high ranking--convinces the prince's older brother that the king doesn't care for him and will chose the prince as his successor. thus the prince's older brother decides to assassinate his father before the prince is officially designated as heir apparent. the prince learns of the plot and the pain in the older brother's soul due to their father's favoring of the prince and alerts his father. the king steps down and appoints the older brother as the next king, so the older brother calls off the assassination by yelling at the concealed assassin not to shoot!). The prince declares his love for the assassin and assures the assassin that he's paid of the big secret organization he's been part of almost his entire life so he's free to live a life of decadence and love with him...and they have hot sex. But the assassin slips out while the prince sleeps in order to leave the country and live on the run by himself. He knows far too well that the organization will never let him live, money or no money. He knows too much. He's chased down by the prince before reaching the airport, however. When he explains to the prince that his presence is just too dangerous, the prince responds that he understands the situation (sort of). He doesn't want to stop the assassin...he wants to go with the assassin and share his life as a fugitive! He's going to throw it all away and run away with the assassin! They will share love and danger to the very end! Can we say "awwww?"
Yes, it is totally silly book. But it was a fun read. And there were some pretty pics.

Nothing says decadent Arabian palace like a gigantic bathing room with 10 servants to tend to all your needs.

Doesn't he look so demure and alluring in his Arabian get-up?

The perfect end to the end (of the beginning) of an Arabian romance!

Date: 2008-07-05 10:29 am (UTC)I've read some of Arabian desert BL novels. Chances we'll have a real spectacular scenery of the Arabian desert are close to none. I always wonder why the heck there have to be the Arabian desert while the entire story usually takes place in the palace's bed chamber. LOL

I know it's fantasy but I can't help laughing^_^

Date: 2008-07-05 05:29 pm (UTC)It's about a hundred times more ironic if one has lived with Arab men for a while and knows their habits and ways of thinking. Let's not even mention the extreme fear they have for anything that remotely touches upon their manhood^_~

Date: 2008-07-06 11:16 pm (UTC)This might be due to mixing with European people in the past but the fact still remain - NOT just a fantasy and probably sits really well with the typical Harlaquin excuse of the Arab prince being half European...

Date: 2008-07-07 01:26 pm (UTC)I think BL gets a bad rap from critics but it’s certainly not the inventor of the unreal. It's not like the American gay fiction I've read has ever been realistic: if I were to read gay erotica in the hope of learning about 'gay men', I'd be led to believe that all men are about 9 inches hanging, with abs cut like a Wellington Crystal punch bowls, and ready for anonymous hot sex about five times a day.
^_^ Romantic smut should be unrealistic [it's a pity I just can't bring myself to write it that way.]

Date: 2008-07-07 02:26 pm (UTC)Saying that - I DO on occasion ruin my own manifesto by reading something more accurate and coherent in the plot department and manage to *gasp* enjoy it! @_@ It never is clear cut. I just don't hate it when it falls off the reality cliff...
It is not a matter of plots over prawns - I like a plot... it just doesn't need to make very much sense or sit accurately in any single geographical or historical setting.
The whole NO BLOND ARABS things confuses me though because, first, they are a minority but not THAT rare in the middle east. People just don't stop and gape at a blond Arab as if it was a spectacle where I come from. I spent the morning talking to a university friend from Kuwait asking if there really aren't any blonds in the gulf and she assured me there exist. I know for a fact that green and hazel eyes are VERY common amongst Arabs, Blue eyes amongst druze, blond hair along the entire Levant... And the Khalifs are gone now but everyone confuses them with Sheiks who are SUPPOSED to be pure blood but often AREN'T because before the invention of genetic tests... who was going to say otherwise.
I was even going to start about the prevalence of albinism in Afro-Asian population which in mild form gives the appearance of blondness...
And then I had to slap myself really hard because, GODDESS, I was RATIONALIZING and I promised I never EVER get into this kind of mindset about the trash I read. I promised it to myself in boarding school!!!
It is like orientalism - the sands seen through romantic glasses wrapped tight in fantasy with a few fetishes sprinkled on top! The Sheik is blond because the writer wanted him to be and because the readers cream their panties about the concept BECAUSE it isn't at all like reality.
