Holy crap, they are manga-izing Deadlock? I am so getting it, I don't think I've ever seen Takashina Yuh do a full-blown manga!!

I checked out the latest Yoneda Kou manga that's been making the rounds, Saezuru tori ha habatakanai, and was rather underwhelmed. I appreciate how the main character is a fucked-up sexed-up uke yakuza boss and all (as opposed to asshole seme yakuza boss), but I wish she'd just continue the more domestic stuff like Ore ni koishite dousunda. *sighs*

Yoake ni wa yasashii kiss wo by Nagira Yuu and illustrated by Takashina Yuh is about a guy who is haunted by something in his past and how he learns to live. It is cliched and is problematic, but it avoids my big pet peeves of the magical healing cock and the "sex=intimacy" fallacy. In fact, it shows how using sex as shorthand for intimacy can be a very bad thing. It also doesn't have any truly abhorrent characters. I liked and felt sorry for all the important people, despite of and because of their flaws and their mistakes. They have to make connections with each other that aren't based on the lame-ass shortcut of the passion of sex. There is a nice mix of "sweeping" romance and the little everyday details of true intimacy. I was very satisfied by the time I got to the end. Also, the art is very nice.

Kagachisama to miko by Sano Fuyuko and illustrated by Takashina Yuh is a totally conventional yet hilarious entry into the isolated location with a weird tradition that includes a kind of "arranged marriage" genre. In this novel there is a small island that is blessed with relatively good weather and abundant harvests from the land and the sea. This is thanks to the protection of the sea god. The sea god selects a priestess and a...err...stand-in by marking them in specific spots. They are partnered for life, and when one dies the other also dies. The priestess and the stand-in go to an even smaller adjacent island for a three-day "ceremony" (which turns out to mostly be sex between the priestess and the stand-in who is possessed by the sea god). In this story the main character, Mizuya, is chosen as the "priestess" (first guy chosen ever!) and the guy he'd left the island to forget is chosen as the stand-in. The stand-in, Kaiji, is the son of a previous priestess, the only child ever born to a priestess, and is an albino. He was feared as a godly child and grew up in relative isolation. Mizuya, much younger than Kaiji, had met Kaiji as a little child. He hadn't been afraid of Kaiji and they became friends. But when Kaiji becomes betrothed to Mizuya's sister Mizuya is filled with jealousy and realizes he loves Kaiji. He is filled with guilt that he's resenting his sister and can't fathom his feelings for Kaiji (he's never heard of a guy in love with a guy--his innocence is adorable), so he asks to go away to work. His sister never marries Kaiji as she's chosen as a priestess. He works hard on the mainland, trying desperately to forget his feelings. But then he has to return when he learns of his sister's death. He also finds the mark on his body and agonizes whether he step up and become the "priestess." In the end he finds that he can't put the island in jeopardy. He is even more shocked to find that Kaiji is the stand-in.

Basically Mizuya then leads a life of isolation. No one wants to be around the priestess because they don't want to offend the god. Also, Kaiji is rather possessive. There is some forced sexual contact, though no penetration with a penis (because that'd be sex! and the priestess has to be a virgin for the sea god!). The forced sexual contact gets worse after Mizuya is nearly assaulted by another islander, including lots of random non-penis things being shoved in Mizuya's ass. Mizuya is in the painful situation of having intimate contact with the person he loves but knowing that the contact is out of duty and not out of love. (oh, the agony!)

In the end, Mizuya is "deflowered" by the sea god possessing Kaiji (after some "tentacle rape" with sea plants instead of tentacles). Kaiji doesn't want to put Mizuya through the experience again but Mizuya does not want to abandon the island. Kaiji wants to figure out a way to end the contract. The islander who had nearly assaulted Mizuya had snuck onto the island with Mizuya and manages to break the contract. The rich family of the island, of whom Kaiji is a member, will have to support the island as they transition to normal conditions with the immense wealth they had accumulated over the years.

They learn that the contract between the island and the sea god had originated because of a girl's wish to bring her dead brother back, whom she loved more than as a brother. She had promised that her brother's descendants would submit to the ceremony as well. Ever since, girls burning with a forbidden love would be chosen as priestesses and the men they loved would be chosen as the stand-ins. They were allowed to have an officially sanctioned affair (the stand-in would be married to some other woman). This fact reveals that Mizuya loves Kaiji. Naturally this leads to Kaiji revealing his own love for Mizuya (he doesn't want to say just how long he's been hiding his own feelings for Mizuya--probably because he's probably wanted Mizuya from when Mizuya was a child), and they finally become a real couple.

Yeah, this story isn't very good. I skimmed some bits. But it was still amusing to me. I was particularly amused by the fact that Mizuya had thought Kaiji was in love with Mizuya's sister the entire time until Kaiji explains that he'd wanted to marry Mizuya's sister to bind Mizuya to him...Which caused Mizuya to run away instead. Good thing the sea god didn't discriminate by gender and chose Mizuya as priestess!

I sort of reread the Deadlock series by Aida Saki today...Oh, the details are so hilarious! I just can't get over the disgustingly lovey-dovey crap Yuhto and Dick say to each other. One bit that jumped out at me because it apparently didn't register in earlier readings was when Yuuto mentions wanting to go to In-N-Out Burger when he gets to LA in the second book because he can only have it when he's out west. Oh how I can relate! One of the things I love to do is hit In-N-Out when on the West Coast, along with Trader Joe's.

Reading Rob's at times outrageous words and actions almost makes me want to check out his spin-off book. I also wouldn't mind reading something about Yuhto and Dick's happily ever after life together saying really disgustingly sweet crap at each other (and Dick looking like a kicked puppy when he thinks Yuhto is mad at him).

Possibly my favorite Rob line: Wanna do more than kiss? I'm quite confident about my size.

How can anyone say this with a straight face?!?

And Takashina Yuh's art is so pretty. The eye candy is pure joy. XD

I was pleasantly surprised when I read Kiniro no ryuu wo dake by Mizuhara Tohru and illustrated by Takashina Yuh. It's by an author that mostly writes stuff I don't care for and the title and the story sounded cliched in a way I'm not that fond of, so I had VERY low expectations going in. It's about a delicate pretty immigrant Chinese guy living in Yokohama who participates in illegal fights to earn enough money to pay for his sick mother's hospital bills. He uses the martial arts he learned from his grandfather in China. When he has some trouble at his job washing dishes at a restaurant, he takes up an offer by the owner and founder of the illegal games to come to him if he wants more money. Owner has him dye his hair blonde and wear Chinese women's clothing to make him look even more feminine and draw the crowds. It totally works, as the disconnect between his appearance and his ability (he's pretty strong) is very appealing. He continues to beat his opponents and becomes more and more popular.

Of course, this being BL, there is sex. Initially owner likes to take the fighter out to dinner and such things, but a certain incident triggers the sex. Fighter does NOT want to have any sex because he'd been sexually abused as a child. But he has no choice because he owes the owner a great deal.

The interesting part of the story is how much it focuses on the fighter's desire to become stronger. He wants to fight stronger opponents, and when he sees an opponent he knows he can't beat he receives training from a master. The "romance" part totally takes a second seat for most of the latter part of the book, IMO. Yes, the fighter does think about the owner a lot, but most of his life is taken up with training. It's amazingly cliched just how...pure-hearted the fighter is, but in the context of training and fighting it works. The last fight was fun to read, and the fighter gets to say a pretty awesome line perfect for the pure-hearted and humble protagonist of a martial arts story. The owner turns out to be amazingly pure hearted as well. The end just made me go "awww."

Nessa no ou to tsumetai tsuki by Shuhdoh Rena and illustrated by Takashina Yuh is another Arabian fantasy BL featuring a half-Caucasian blue-eyed Arabian prince, this time paired with an assassin pretending to be a prostitute in order to kill the prince's father. Instead of the assassin getting in bed with the father so that he can do his killing as planned, he gets routed to the son. They have hot sex. Assassin eventually realizes the prince must know he's not the simple prostitute he's pretending to be, sees the prince's invitation to the prince's country as a challenge and takes him up on it (and to get another chance to kill the father and fulfill his mission--failure is NOT an option!). They get to the prince's country where the assassin is suitably impressed by the decadence of the palaces. They have more hot sex. There's resolution of the entire assassination plot (the upshot is that the prime minister--or someone similarly high ranking--convinces the prince's older brother that the king doesn't care for him and will chose the prince as his successor. thus the prince's older brother decides to assassinate his father before the prince is officially designated as heir apparent. the prince learns of the plot and the pain in the older brother's soul due to their father's favoring of the prince and alerts his father. the king steps down and appoints the older brother as the next king, so the older brother calls off the assassination by yelling at the concealed assassin not to shoot!). The prince declares his love for the assassin and assures the assassin that he's paid of the big secret organization he's been part of almost his entire life so he's free to live a life of decadence and love with him...and they have hot sex. But the assassin slips out while the prince sleeps in order to leave the country and live on the run by himself. He knows far too well that the organization will never let him live, money or no money. He knows too much. He's chased down by the prince before reaching the airport, however. When he explains to the prince that his presence is just too dangerous, the prince responds that he understands the situation (sort of). He doesn't want to stop the assassin...he wants to go with the assassin and share his life as a fugitive! He's going to throw it all away and run away with the assassin! They will share love and danger to the very end! Can we say "awwww?"

Yes, it is totally silly book. But it was a fun read. And there were some pretty pics.
