awesome stuff on the internet encountered today

Pure awesome: CATZILLA.

Not as awesome because nothing is as awesome as CATZILLA: I also heard a fun interview of a guy who wrote an article in The New Yorker last month about Mary Renault (listen here) that makes me want to go to the library to find this issue to read the actual article. I remember discovering Mary Renault in college and reading everything I could get my hands on. Ah, the memories...

pic spam of cuteness

I love this thing. I need the version with the mouth open. ♥♥

The other day at Barnes & Noble I bought this sudoku book solely for the cover. Yeah, I'm a sucker. ^^; Oh, how well they know their target audience.

I love collecting covers, found some great ones by a folky group called Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers who like to record covers while traveling in their van:

Everyday by Buddy Holly
Material Girl by Madonna
How Will I Know by Whitney Houston (sound quality is not that great)
You're No Good by Linda Ronstadt (they looked massively cramped with all the guitars in this one)
Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin (a cappella!)

things that made me smile: Halloween edition

A lot of the "jokes" of my one-a-day cat desk calendar are lame or completely incomprehensible, but these were cute.

Driving home last night I saw a guy with a beer belly riding a scooter in a full-on Captain America costume. Somehow wrong, but I guess the wrongness was a bit adorable? I especially loved the shield hanging on his backside.

braaaaaains...

Erg, haven't posted in forever. Unfortunately my laptop is not working properly (battery life is shot and it heats up like crazy pretty quickly) and my ipad is awesome for consumption. Instead, I've been collecting Generation Kill fics that I'm just going to post without reworking the blurbs for the fics (some are just cut and pasted from the author's summary ^^;). I got on the recent kick thanks to [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine's rec of a fusion with A Companion to Wolves. XD

I've also been rereading my manga/books and been finding out that some just suck. One that was particularly distasteful was Keijijou na bokura by Kawai Touko. Holy crap those kids are emo woobies...I doubt I liked it all that much when I first read it because it reminds me all to much of Cut, another emo manga by her I have never warmed to.

happy 4th of july, people who celebrate it!

My celebration consists of laying around and being glad I don't have to be at work. XD;

I've been rereading a bunch of PoT doujinshi recently. I was looking through my bookmarks and started clicking on old fanfic/fanart sites. Of course most of the sites were gone, so instead of depressing myself I decided to enjoy what I did have. I shifted my (heavy) boxes of doujinshi around to get to the PoT ones and started going through it. The first one I grabbed were the two pictured above. They are a set that came in a plastic bag closed with a specially made sticker you can barely make out under the Ryoma book (I love details like that) and each book is over 100 pages. So OOC, way too sweet, but so much fun to read.

My cat "helping" me change my sheets by getting between the fitted and flat sheet. She'd follow me under the sheet to each corner as I straightened it, looking kind of like a mole as she moved around. I finally pulled the fitted sheet up to take a pic.

sleepy...

I bought a daily calender featuring cat cartoons. This one baffled me. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

I borrowed the first box set of Avatar: The Last Airbender from the library and watched the first disc (three or four episodes). Wow, I can truly see where the fan anger about the movie casting is coming from. It's one thing to see random screen captures, it's a whole 'nother thing to see the cultures in action and think that this has nothing to do with white people. In any case, it's fairly entertaining but not captivating so far. By far the best character at this point is Katara. It's nice to see a strong, nice, sympathetic female character. I found the boys far more annoying. Aang I could forgive because he's obviously really just a kid. Sokka in general is okay, he just needs to shut up with his sexist crap. Zuko is truly annoying. I'm know sooner or later we'll see what made him the way he is and all, but at this point I just want to see as little as possible of him. :P

I was highly amused reading [livejournal.com profile] seperis's post reacting to the article "Wake Up, Geek Culture. Time to Die" by Patton Oswalt in Wired. I'd heard about this article and didn't think I needed to read it, and her reaction doubles that down.

I bought a new camera. It is very awesome. I've been taking waaaay too many pics of my cat with it. ♥

is it only tuesday? *sighs*

I've been having some problems sleeping, so I decided to shut my cat out last night in order to prevent her pouncing on my legs and waking me up completely (and giving me pain). She doesn't bother me while I'm asleep, but when she senses that I'm even sort of awake she attacks my legs. It hurts. And totally wakes me up. But when I heard the scratching at the door I couldn't do it. I got up and let her in, and she meowed and shoved her face in my face and curled up next to me. It's worth the pain and the scars and the inability to go back to sleep, right?

I've been ignoring the upcoming royal wedding in general, but I couldn't help but read an article in today's newspaper because it concerned what Kate Middleton's title will be. I recently looked up the whole Peerage thing thanks to all the GH reading, so the topic interested me. The title will be determined by the Queen. As Prince William doesn't really have a title title yet, it is speculated that he'll probably get a Dukedom or an Earldom so she'll be a Duchess or a Countess. She could end up as "Her Royal Highness Princess William of Wales," which would be rather sucky. It reminded me of how the annoying sister-in-law in Slyvester was Lady Henry Rayne and how odd it sounded. Looking for an article to link to, I came across articles about changing the rules of succession so that it doesn't privilege the male children before the female children (and exclude Catholics). While I don't really care as I'm not a citizen of the country, I hope they bother to do it. Surely they can overcome any lame arguments by asshole sexists. Japan seemed so ass-backwards back when there was talk of changing their stupid law which doesn't allow females to become Empress. (But then I didn't pay too much attention to that either. Once again, not my country. ^^;)

More fanfics:

Just How by Lovelikethemovies, Generation Kill, Brad/Nate, Nate and Brad one fine morning. Sweet and short.

A Matter of National Security, Sherlock, J/S, Mycroft meddles. For everyone's sake.

Lab Book by sam storyteller, Sherlock, S/J, Chrismas Eve, lots of cute moments on the way to the two getting it on. Loved the freaky deduction by John! He's been around Sherlock too much.

Autopsis by [livejournal.com profile] spikeface, Sherlock, S/J, Sherlock is kinda nuts. There is violence and sex. (Not sure I like it, but I want to remember it and so it goes into an LJ post. I just don't bother with bookmarks for some fandoms, posting in LJ is my substitution for bookmarking. ^^;)

Reversal of Fortune by [livejournal.com profile] mad_poetics, Merlin, Merlin/Arthur modern AU in which Merlin is the rich boss and Arthur is the assistant. So sweet!

Bunch of pornathon request fics by [livejournal.com profile] mad_poetics, Merlin, mostly Merlin/Arthur, the tentacles one is pretty good but the second challenge that can not be described is too awesome for words.

Merry Christmas!

It's still Christmas here, though I know it's already the next day in most of the world...I was unconscious for most of the day, thanks to a night of bad sleep. XD;

Random Christmas stuff:

Lena Park singing Christmas carols

Don't forget Amazon's free Christmas MP3's (I can't get a clean link, so go to MP3 downloads, there should be a link from the top page). I particularly liked "You Holiday Song" by Indigo Girls, "Joseph's Lullaby" by MercyMe, "Winter's Games" by Superchunk, and "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Dan Fogelberg. I haven't listened to the last three, so no opinion there.

Not Martha shows how to make a Christmas tree mobile (love this, wish I was handy and could do it)

Non-Christmas but funny (even though--or it is because?--I haven't read the book): My Breaking Dawn Reading Experience by bookshelves of doom

Non-Christmas but tasty-looking: Swedish Butterhorns

Last but not least, Non-Christmas but cute: Bunnies and kitties at Lovely Clusters

RL Wank: Magazine plagiarizes woman on internet and tells her that she should pay them when she complains. I first heard it on On the Media and the way the email from the magazine editor is read out loud is priceless, as is the song using the email as lyrics. Original LJ post by the victim here. I'm fighting the urge to look for more posts and articles on the subject to see what different takes people have about the whole business...

Via [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine: Anomie by charmax, an extremely well-edited Sherlock music vid. Bonus: check out the parts of speech slash in the comments of her post.

Jimmy Fallon as Justin Beiber talking about the economy made me laugh even though I have no idea how Justin Beiber actually talks.

I want this umbrella.

One of a series of Egyptian commercials: Never Say No to Panda - Office

Japanese commercial for itchy crotches.

Bunnies in cups!

I was amused by the NYT opinion piece Cat People Are People, Too because I'm a proud cat owner and can't stand the "crazy cat lady" thing (or how it's odd for single guys to own cats or something??).

so cute!

The Birman is an adorable cat breed! I happened to catch Cats 101 on Animal Planet yesterday and just fell in love. I doubt I'd actually get one since I don't want to pay lots of money for a cat when I can just give a home to a cat from the Humane Society....I've never actually formally adopted a cat since we always ended up "owning" the stray cats that came around our house, but now that we live in a condo that won't happen any more. :P

I'm so pissed since I made a pretty big book/manga order the other week and just realized there's a book out that I *really* want. I won't be ordering any books for a while since I tend to make an order every three to four months, so I'll be waiting a while to read the book. *sighs* Serves me right for not being thorough when I made my order.

In Progress by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock is hilariously snarky/ironic Kurt POV. I don't watch Glee but I do know (more or less) who the characters are, so I was amused. I think the rating says it all: R, for teenagers being unbearable. XD;

Been surfing the non-fanfic portion of the internet, and been having a blast. Some fun things I've come across:

From Cake Wrecks: Harry Potter inspired cakes

From Life Hacker: 10 Tricks for Making Your Playlists Rock

This pic from I Can Has Cheeseburger made me laugh and reminded me of the awesome book Nekonabe I picked up in Japan this last trip. Nekonabe is delightful not only for the pics of cats in nabe, but the narrative the pics are placed in. Best part may just be the how to make your own nekonabe "recipe." Also cute: Ninja kitteh attacks

Loved the Bronte sisters checking out men cartoon! Makes me want to read Anne's book(s?) since I've read the other two...

I am guilty of doing the things that cause cat yodeling with my own cat. Especially the excessive kissing! XDXD;

Circus is a fabulous vid featuring Kirk to "Circus" by Britney Spears. I want that song now...
